Plus where do I buy them from?

Try Gankutsuou for drama and Azumanga Daioh or Cromartie High for comedy.

I get all my anime from Hulu or NetFlix now, which I assume is of no use to you.

Cowboy Bebop is scifi and probably my favourite ever.

I also loooove Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fullmetal Alchemist is great too.

Those are loads to get started with anyway! I bought move from amazon mostly I think. Fecking expensive hobby though.

Cowboy Bebop is a must, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also very good.

Neon Genesis is good but it's quite divisive, I don't know if you'd like it or not but it's kinda one of those things you need to watch. I thought Hellsing was decent too.

    Anything Ghibli too.

Get them through Amazon, ebay or google it, I'm sure there are tons of resellers in the UK.

I'd also recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Beebop, both are top notch and the 'End of Evangelion' movie is amazing. The english voice overs in Evangelion take some getting used to though as they're a touch whiney and grating (Shinji and Asuka notably).

Last Exile, Tokyo Godfathers, Haibane Renmei and Kino's Journey are some I've also enjoyed a lot too and you may well like Ergo Proxy too.

Oh, and as already mentioned, Samurai Champloo and the Ghibli stuff too :)

Any common online retailer should be fine, such as Amazon or Play etc.

Baccano!! Mystical gangster epic, lots of mysteries, a bit like Lost. Very atypical anime, in a good way

Last Exile is a good call but like a lot of anime it gets all bizarre and existential towards the end.

Check out Appleseed, it's not as smart as GitS or Akira but is an action-packed sci-fi extravaganza. Trigun is another decent series. And it's not SF, but Berserk is an excellent and very violent fantasy series, only slightly spoiled by a very poor final episode.

There's some great stuff from the 70s and 80s if you don't mind the animation not being computer generated. Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Megazone 23, the original Gundam, the beautiful Galaxy Express 999, Space Runaway Ideon...few of them aren't out on DVD but there are English fansubbed editions to download.

Grave of the Fireflies is an absolute classic. I don't mind admitting I shed a tear.

Battle Angel Alita was good fun.

Ghost in the Shell was all kinds of awesome.

Dominion Tank Police was a good laugh.

I see that Perfect Blue hasn't been mentioned yet. It's a psycho-thriller mostly, and despite a lot of weird stuff going on, it has a proper, satisfying conclusion that makes sense.

Noein and Paranoia Agent are two of my favourite TV series, never mind anime shows. Outlaw Star is also good fun.

Just don't do what my little Niece did - not knowing what to get, she picked up the first anime thing she found - Legend of the Overfiend.

I wish I'd been there to see her face when she watched that =D
