Pretty sure they've going to put the touch stuff on the back like the Vita.

Those mid-controller touchpads are completely pointless, ergonomically speaking.

Replace D-pad with a touch pad? Not sure people would like that either.
Nah, put the analogue stick in the primary position like the Dreamcast, GameCube, WiiU and 360 - every post PS1 console other than those made by Sony basically. It still floors me that the 2013 PS3 pad is pretty much a PS1/N64 era design.

They could still do a stick that switched position. That way the fans wouldn't wail about the forced change.

    Possible PS4 controller prototype

As DB has said, a touchscreen in the middle of a controller is pretty pointless. It may still have a touch pad thing on the back of the controller, that way you may be able to use it more comfortably.

Still, it looks bigger and comfier than the current PS3 controller.

The touchpad looks pointless, but the shape looks quite nice. Looks like it has a speaker in it too, and a tracking light for the eyetoy.

    Not exactly mind blowing stuff.

What makes it primary? My thumb can sit on either the D-pad or the left stick with no difference in comfort level.

    @Feanor

It's bullshit Microsoft propaganda is what it is! :p

The idea of a primary position is a bit silly imo. It really shouldn't be difficult to get them both into a comfortable position.

Primary is where I find my thumbs naturally resting when I grasp a pad. Face buttons are primary located for my right thumb. On the PS3 pad my left thumb will sit over the D pad, every other pad it sits over an analogue stick.

Surely no-one would argue that the Dualshock design emphasises analogue stick over the D pad?

Yeah I've never understood this complaint. Perhaps it's because the original Playstation controller didn't have sticks, and the current dual shock design is still very much a PS1 controller with sticks bolted on. It's probably more to do with what people are used to.

The sticks on the DS are stupidly out of the way, but I don't think simply swapping them over would solve much. For one then you'd then have a d-pad which stupidly out of the way.

They're all so set on that Snes shape and button lay out that it's become a real hindrance.

I'm not saying its uncomfortable to use the left analogue on the Dualshock. I'm saying it would be preferential for racing games, third person games and FPS if it was located where the d pad is currently.

When I play GT4 at my mates I find it amazing that the default control set up is d pad for steering and face buttons for acceleration / braking. I'd be getting much better lap times using a 360 controller with (concave) triggers and an analogue stick your thumb sits neatly in.

    Tl:Dr - 1994 layout needs updating.

The position of the sticks is fine on both controllers. They really need to work on the build quality and the accuracy of the sticks rather than the position. Overall I find the 360 has the shittiest analog sticks in terms of quality. For the layout of the controller, I'm fine with either. When I'm playing I don't even think about it.

Oh, and the previously mentioned problem of not really being able to use your thumbs on the screen:

@Psychotext One word - Yuk. It looks outdated for a next gen console controller.

Again, just a development version. I imagine the final one will be somewhat more refined.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo should just team up. Sony can make the console, Microsoft the main controller, and Nintendo can make the gonzo controller and, like, a game or something.

More refined but still using the same 1994 layout no doubt. So when PS4 launches here it will be the 20th anniversary of that core pad design. As a previous poster noted, the analogue sticks basically had to go where they are now as they were a mid gen addition during the PS1 era. The pad wasn't designed around them as they were an afterthought.

Fine in the PS1 days where 3D gaming was in its infancy but not so great 20 years on.

If an engineer designed a pad from scratch now, with analogue control as the main input, their design would not be a Dualshock. Sega, Nintendo and Microsoft all opted for "primary" (that word again) analogue sticks, why haven't Sony?

To move the analogue sticks they would have to redesign it completely rather than simply swapping the d-pad. It's clear the design hasn't been game breaking over the years. I've never liked it but it doesn't cause major problems. Annoyance at worst.

Even the controller for Steam Big Picture has that analogue stick placement which I find bizarre.

This primary thing you speak of is nonsense. The symmetry of a DS is just as good. If 'primary' is the supposed pinnacle then the right stick would also have to move and swap positions with the face buttons.

It looks to me like the prototype PS4 controller is fine, symmetrical (like our hands are) but with tighter spacing for better comfort.
If its nonsense then why has every other post PS1 pad design used a non symmetrical analogue stick placement? DC, GC, Xbox/360, WiiU...

Move the face buttons to where the right stick is and I'd be happy with that as a PS4 pad. Assuming the triggers are sorted out/ improved.
