Can never quite understand all this trying to be clever by being bizarre crap.. a video montage of GTA:SA, Ratchet and Clank3, Jak3, GradiusV, WRC4, Smackdown vs Raw and MGS3 would sell a whole load of PS2's.

pah, why are they bollocks? advertising is about gettin the consumers attention, generating 'noise' about the product. the 'fun, anyone?' is such a simple yet effective slogan, sony should be applauded for choosing a pr/marketing strategy that is somewhat 'out-there' :)

My favourite is the one where they build a mountain out of people. Brilliant. These ones were okay but nothing special. The slight German accent in the voice over was very good though. :)

    Load of shit!

    HERE'S how I would do a PS2 commercial:

Open on a bunch of toffs preparing a fox hunt beside some woods, and show the head of the toffs (Played by Brian Blessed) blowing on a trumpet from the back of his horse. A large group of hounds respond to the sound by charging into the woods snarling and barking with the toffs in hot pursuit.

Cut to three men in running gear, each one wearing comical fox ears on their head and grazing around among the trees like real foxes. They are also each wearing individual shirts, one marked 'GC', one marked 'XB', and the other marked 'PS2'. They hear the trumpet and look up in shock. The three see the hounds run towards them and run like buggery away.

Brief chase, during which the 'GC' fox is mauled to bloody bits by the hounds. Then Brian Blessed catches up with the 'XB' fox and blows it's head off with his shotgun before pursuing the 'PS2' fox shouting: "You can't get away, YOU CAN'T!" Before laughing maniacally.

The chase eventually leads out of the woods and into a clearing, where 'PS2' fox looks back at the pursuing Brian Blessed and smiles, his teeth glinting, before he suddenly surges forward at super speed, blowing Brian Blessed off his horse with the force of a sonic boom and leaving a twin pair of 'Back to the Future' style fire trails right across the clearing.

Brian Blessed stands up, looks at the fire trails, falls to his knees and says in shock: "Magnificent!"

PS2 logo then appears on screen, with the tag line: "Can you handle the rush?"

    The end!

End it (after the text and price info) with a return shot of Blessed saying 'PS2's alive?!' and you've got yourself one more customer.

I'd have the PS2 Fox being trampled by the horse and mauled by the hound with Brian Blessed saying "Third Place isn't that great now is it!

    This signature intentionally left blank.

It's because Sony wants to sell PS2's to people who don't like games. In order to do that you have to trick them with silly adverts.

Reads more like an xbox commercial though. I nearly died of shock the first time I saw that xbox ad. It was on a 20 foot LED screen at London Victoria station. Thank God it had no sound.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Saw the one with the pornstars on C4 last night, the bit about taking the golfer from behind was missing :(

Brilliant stuff. This kind of 'different' advertising is how it should be done.
Game footage always looks shite on TV ads to be honest.

I'm pretty sure it uses a Mini chassis. The guy driving is actually inside the sofa, and there's a little hole for him to see out of. Looked like great fun though... :)

There's a wee bit on the bloke who builds those things in the Radio Times this week. He's made a desk, a sofa, and a couple of other bits and bobs - mostly from minis and VWs.

Most of 'em are used in advertising. He made a 105mph loaf of bread for some ad campaign. Imagine seeing that tooling down the M6!

Thinking back through the history of TV ads for consoles, I think most of 'em have been utter bollocks. I remember the DC ads being crap, I seem to remember the PS1 ads being horrific (you KNOW who I'm talking about, that fucking FREAK woman with the scots accent...! ARGHH!!!!) and the Xbox ads, though clever, did nowt to make me buy the game.

I reckon game footage works. The Vice City / SA ads are superb as they just show the game intercut with some good music.

EA's ads are more often than not sickmaking (sorry binks!)

The vast majority of games consoles are not bought by 'gamers' especially at this stage in the hardware cycle

Game footage may appeal to some of you, but to the vast majority it's deeply offputting unless it's 'realistic' or represents the 'real world' (e.g. the San Andreas ads), or uses recognisable IP (Harry Potter, The Incredibles)

EA's TV ads are generally regarded as being extremely effective, as has Sony's TV campaign. If you disagree -it's cos they're 'not meant for you'

    ;)
