Today's puzzle (slightly less agngry than yesterday's) as shamelessly borrowed from XKCD:

When you hold writing up to a mirror, it is reflected left to right. Why is it reflected only left to right but not top to bottom? What is it about the horizontal axis that makes it so special?

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Any chance Feynman can come to the rescue in a more work-friendly fashion?

Because mirrors reflect light, they don't rotate it.

You see what you would if stood behind a semi transparent object.

Surely it's because you've rotated it around the vertical axis to point it to the mirror, so what you're seeing is what you'd see if the back was transparent?

Why is rotated around the vertical axis though?

Because that's what you do intuitively when you hold text up to the mirror.

You could flip it through the hoizontal axis. Text is then upside down. But left-to-right orientation is now preserved.

But if it reflected it 180 deg vertically through the plane on the horizontal axis the light would definitely be bent.

So basically the mirror takes the front of my body, pulls it through me and then shows it to me. Sounds moderately uncomfortable. :(

The mirror doesn't flip the writing around. You do!

I love mornings. Last night I was trying to get something working in a game and got to 20 lines of code sprawling around different classes. It was a right mess so rage quit, deleted all the shit I had spent the previous hour on then went to sleep.

This morning did what I wanted to do in 2 lines of code and 5 mins.
