I used to have a metal Rotring Rapid Pro pencil. Looked gorgeous and was great to write with. Unfortunately it disappeared/was stolen a long time ago.

I mourn the loss of that far less than the loss of my steel typographic ruler though - that was fantastic. Nowadays everything's done on computers of course, but back in the day every newspaper editor worth their salt had one. Plus it worked great as a theft deterrent - getting smacked on the fingers with one of those HURT.

I had a slide rule, never had any idea how it worked though

What were those lever gadgets called where you could trace a small picture using the pencil of one end of the gizmo, and a pencil on the other end of the lever system would draw the same picture but a large version?

I seem to be obsessed with buying pencils at the moment. Not the fancy propelling stuff, just ordinary pencils.
I'm learning Japanese, and have a couple of notebooks that I use for writing Kana, Kanji etc in.
I'm trying to find a suitable lead, but thus far, 2H and 3H are too hard, and if I make a mistake, they've left an indent in the paper, while HB and beyond (2B etc) seem to be too soft, so minutes after you've sharpened it, it's giving a fat, indistinct line.

Suggestions please, pencil fetishists!

H or an F surely? Think those are your only options between HB and 2H?

No ben, 2B or not 2B that is the question.

Because I've never seen an H, I kind of assumed it went...

3B 2B HB 2H 3H

I shall look for an H.

But F? What is this F of which you speak, and where does it fit in the pencil hardness hierarchy?

F used to sit between HB and H - so harder than HB but softer/blacker than H. I'm pretty sure you can still buy them, atlhough you might have to go to an art shop to find the full range?

F's are few and far between now. If it's a pencil for writing you're looking for, then a Palomino Blackwing is probably just the ticket.

Anyone got one of those space pens or whatever they are called that you can use under water and writes on glass, a kid at school had one many years ago and got it nicked on her first day.

Fisher Space Pen. I've got one and it's great as it fits in the fold of my wallet.

Space pens are shit, it's like writing with chewing gum.

This or this is far better if you want a compact pen.

That Blackwing 602 looks like it might be just the thing - I shall track some down. Cheers DB!

While looking for it, found a nice article from the Telegraph site.

Scroll down for some links to stationery pr0n.

Aside from the painful smack threat, I would love one of those. Beats trying to draw type using my crap maths skills and graph paper.

Also, cor!

I like this thread.

I had one of those zebra expandz jobs, it was quite good. Did a decent job of being a full-size ballpoint pen when you expanded it, and a decent job of being a quite small thing when you collapsed it again.
I lost it though, because of the smallness. Also, I assume it'll run out of ink twice as fast as your normal size ballpoint.

My pen of choice has always been the fine point Mitsubishi UB-157

It's probably the best pen ever made.

Wow...

I have no idea what I'd do with the dividers, and I already have a perfectly good fountain pen, but...

I.
Want.

I have one on my watch (and have learnt how to use it too!).

Regarding pens, I have a very normal Cross Silver ballpoint.

Pfff Pentel G-Tec C4 is the best mass market pen ever created. Shits on those.

Is that the type with the weird ribcage thing going in under the cap? If so they are awesome. I always use either one of them, my old Parker 25, or some pencil I half inched from somewhere over the years. I can't remember the last time I actually paid for a pencil.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

I've always found the the writing feeling too harsh with Pentels. I get a much smoother experience with Mitsubishi's, feels like I'm gliding on the paper.

Try that one, it's like the slickest point you've ever used. I've got some of the mitsubishis but between the collapsing ball in the roller, the mucking and occasional flooding... er forgot what i was going to say. Pentel... better, none of their other pens mind, just those ones. :D
