I don't know if you've noticed but Mexican restaurants, kitchens and market stalls are growing in popularity in the UK.

As a lover of authentic mexican food (not that crap you get in American restaurants labelled tex-mex), this is a great development.

On my travels around our mighty isle, I'd like to know of some of the best places to pick up the classic burrito. Please leave your recommendations, but be sure to explain what makes it great!

I quite like Wahaca. No idea if that is considered authentic or not though. They do a beef or chicken with rice burrito that is really nice and also pretty reasonable priced for central London eating. Of course if you go to one outside of central London it may not be so good on value.

I love Chipotle, even if it is faux-Mexican food. Those burritos are massive and delicious.

I went to a restaurant called Las Iguanas in Liverpool had had a delicious burrito. Plenty of meat, just the right amount of sour cream and guacamole. It was nice and large too. There's also an outlet of Barburrito near there and they do a pretty decent burrito that you can customise to your liking.

You're the second person to recommend Wahaca, and it's a 5 minute walk from my office so I shall plan a visit this week.

As an added bonus they appear to stock genuine mexican tequila. Me happy!

The only one in the UK is at Lakeside shopping centre isn't it? I wouldn't advise travelling to that chav/wag infested shithole to eat a burrito

If you are in London Benitos Hat seems to be pretty popular as well. The thing with these guys is its more fast food and they do a lot more take away rather then a sit down meal which is what Wahaca tends to be.

    http://www.benitos-hat.com/

I have actually yet to try them though despite there being one opposite my office. It is always full though. so thats probably a good sign.

Yep, Benito's Hat (Oxford Circus) is one I frequent once a week.

Generally good, although a lot depends on when you time your visit. When the ingredients are totally fresh the burrito's are superb (especially the salsa), but a few times I've come away a little disappointed because the refried beans were way too dry.

El Burrito does the best burritos I've tasted (especially the Pastor - pork and pineapple). Was a bit disappointed with the Wahaca burritos, much prefer their street food selection (cerviche!).

Worst I've ever had is Mexi-Cali, no flavour whatsoever.

Seems to be about the right price for London.

Another one I have been to I actually forgot was Cafe Pacifico at Covent Garden.

    http://www.cafepacifico-laperla.com/cpl.html

I remember the food being excellent though I also remember the beer being copious on that occasion. Quite expenive if I can remember anything about going there.

As nick mentions, the Mission in Oxford does a decent burrito, but the best I have had was in Cambridge about a month ago - next to one of the Pieces and down the road from Zizzi's there is a great Mexican cafe place, but I don't know the name of it and am not based in Cambridge normally.

Always liked Giraffe (the restaurant, fool!) and they do a cracking chilli beef enchilada.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

I really like the Burrito and extra large Margarita option :-)

Love both of those places! Have you tried the new one in town yet? (Mexigo, IIRC) I think it's partly owned by the people who run Savina, which is also brilliant. It's like a fast food Savina.

    Haven't tried it yet though.

Can't say I've ever seen Burritos for sale in the UK, I'm not actually too sure what they are now I'm thinking about it.
