Once every 2 to 3 months is too much unless it's just dusting. Controller front side is gloss too unfortunately. Don't understand why they still go with gloss. Hope Sony and MS avoid it like the plague next gen. Never ever a good idea.

One thing I'm curious about re; the finger print magnet thing, how often do people handle a console? My black Wii and PS3 get handled once every 2 to 3 months for a quick clean, that's about it.
The GamePad has exactly the same horrifically overly glossy material as the Wii U console itself ...

... I think you'll end up giving it a 'quick clean' once every two or three days!

No, more that Nintendo have always had two concurrent consoles to develop for, Microsoft have only had one. And I'm counting the main 3D console games, of which there were only three for Zelda, compared to five for Halo.

Count the HD remakes for both!

Yes, although the RAM speed is slow, developers have commented how fast memory access is so I expect the EDRAM to more than make up for it.

I think Nintendo are hoping you buy a bigger battery
  • Deleted user 18 November 2012 21:43:56
    That is shameful.
  • Deleted user 18 November 2012 21:45:08
Not really, the battery is bound to degrade over time. The option to replace the battery with new and improving battery is good.

If they are truly selling the system at a loss then I suppose it's not too bad, and it's nice to have the option of a bigger battery thought about in advance.

I don't how they're managing to sell this thing at a loss, they've cheaped out on every part shown so far, that streaming tech must be something special.

ah ok i see it now. after a bit of research. Yeah the controller tech must really be the business. The way it streams stuff is seriously impressive.

@ResidentKnievel well we don't know the full spec yet. A slightly more expensive (than 360 spec) unit, with new streaming tech, a proprietary disc drive and tablet controller in a small form could theoretically cost that much more.

It costs 50 cents to register a minor's account on the Wii U. So 50p here then probably?

Thats awesome. I wonder if the parental controls go deeper than that with playing games. Surely they could lock in age rated games? get those fucking children of Blops.

I doubt it would cost more than a 360, cheapo 2012 parts should be less expensive than scaled down 2005 exotic parts, otherwise price of tech would increase at the same rate as technological advancement.

That proprietary disc drive is likely a low speed, blu-ray disc drive without the royalty payments, and the screen is really low quality by today's standards.

Unless the GPU is something really special, then it must be the streaming tech making up the bulk of the cost.

if it's better than the abortion that is kinect parental controls Microsoft implemented I'll gladly pay 10 times that to correctly isolate content to them, and leave it open for me

From reading the Neogaf thread, there appear to be a few very common problems that many people are noticing/experiencing:

    a) The O/S is pretty slow

    b) Very large and slow download of the firmware update (although apparently this can run in the background, something which a few have discovered by accident)

    c) If the HDMI cable is used for video only (for example when connecting it to a PC monitor with no speakers) then it's NOT possible to get sound only via the AV Multi Out, only via headphones plugged into the Gamepad (but presumably there won't be any point in plugging headphones into the Gamepad for games that don't use the Gamepad, such as Wii games)

    d) A fair number of people are experiencing something rattling around inside the Gamepad (some say the buttons rattle, while others say it's not the buttons)

Hopefully by the time it is in the UK the bandwidth for the firmware will be increased, and the slow menu systems fixed.

Doesn't matter to me too much as it's a Christmas present for the kids so Nintendo have a good few weeks to get the update sorted.

Ah, curious. I thought it'd been announced that the Wii U eshop was going back to using points, like the Wii eShop (and the DSi one) but unlike the 3DS eShop. Well it seems that in America at least, that's not the case.

I hope that means the market over here will soon be flooded with cards and I can finally buy something from the 3DS eshop (without using my credit card - don't ask).

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!
