I've never had any issues with Mario Kart Wii online, but then again I didn't with Monster Hunter 3. I do wonder what's going on there.

I've always felt there should be a little cross pollination between smash and Kart. I'd love to see greater customisation options so I can get rid of the the power ups I don't like in Kart, choose stage music, etc. On the other hand, Brawl was nearly perfect but it's online mode really paled in comparison to Kart on Wii.

So, spending a little time with Mario 3d world today, I'm currently up to world 3-6

    It's such a great game.

Must make more of an effort!! I forget sometimes gaming is about fun!

Could the Wii U at least do better this year, with Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, and X?

    I bought one after Christmas.
Cained Mario in no time at all, like Rayman but only played for a few days, and gave up on Zelda as it is just so drawn out and I just don't have time to put aside to exploring every island for 4 hours to get one piece of info.

So the WiiU is gathering dust.
    Please be great Mario Kart.
Wind Waker drawn out? But its so compact and bijou! Its a great game, dont let it pass you by like I did when it was originally released. Like you, I played a few hours and never went back until recently where I discovered its not just good but sodding brilliant.

I'm surprised they haven't announced an Animal Crossing game for the Wii U yet, they're low budget since they always heavily reuse assets from the prior release and the games themselves are pretty low end, they're basically not much further along than the N64 original.

Surely they could come with some interesting pad functionality, adding custom designs to clothing and furniture would be easier at least.

Though I could see it being a repeat of the infamous E3 2008 if that's all they've got for surprise announcements this year.

There already is custom clothing and furniture, town flags, wallpaper and carpets.

3ds is the perfect platform for Animal Crossing. A Wii U version would look better and probably have some new features but wouldn't be any more fun.

I far prefer Animal Crossing as a portable game. I never played the GC or Wii ones added together nearly as much as I've played the 3DS one, as it's far easier to quickly pop on and do whatever tasks you like. Quite a lot of my playtime has been on the bus too.

There is still potential for a new home AC game though, and like Cappy says I'm surprised they haven't announced one given they can't be that expensive to make. The 3DS one did add quite a bit more, but the Wii one barely seemed to build on the DS one.

I'm surprised they haven't even went for the MH3U model and just ported the Wii U one across so you could play it on 2 platforms.

Can I play on the wii u without switching the gamepad on?
Using just the pro controller for example?

@CompetitiveDad the pad automatically turns on when you turn on the console...but you can control the dash with a wiimote or pro controller, its a bit fiddly though.

@Gambit1977 cheers for the reply. I just wanted to play Mario with just the pro controller on the tv as I find myself looking at the gamepad instead!

Bizarre that you can't switch it off. What if the pad breaks? :-/

@CompetitiveDad you have to get a replacement. Bit of a chore all in all. But yeah, when you play Mario just use the pro pad to select your character. When my mates are around we give the pad to the worst player all the time and hes always player 4...bear in mind though, you can't do the Toad missions on a normal pad, only with the gamepad.

@Gambit1977 I love them Toad missions!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I think the pad is great, I love the off tv play but it's a bit odd to play with the same display on the pad as well as the tv at the same time.

Some games support just the TV. Afraid I can't remember which ones, but I've definitely played a few multiformat games without the Gamepad. I think Skylanders Giants was one of them.

DK turns off the pad if you play on TV.

For anybody comfortable with digital downloads, Bit Trip Runner 2 is going for 3.33 from Thursday. I cannot recommend this game enough. It was one of the best games I played last year.

All quiet on the Wii U front lately (and the 3ds thread too). I guess there's not a lot to talk about until Mario Kart arrives.

Maybe everyone is just too busy playing all the great games.

    Wait... that can't be right.

I think literally everyone, forumites and press alike, have just got bored with saying what a hash nintendo are making of everything.

Plus the XB1 is filling the void of awfulness quite nicely.

I was thinking the same the other day. Since DK appeared last month it has all gone quiet on the Wii U front. I think it is partly to do with lack of releases and a lot of current focus on the Bone and PS4 despite their lack of releases.

I was reading in MCV yesterday that retailers are expecting Mario Kart to revive the Wii U's fortunes. It might, especially as Nintendo are turning off the online mode of the Wii version. Will it force everyone to upgrade?
