Yes, Mark Rein does have a habit saying "no" when he means "not without effort I don't think it'd be worth putting in", but that's just how he is. Look at CryEngine on Wii - they really shouldn't have bothered! As I see it, I have no doubt UE4 could be tweaked to run on Wii U, but only by compromising it. Just as well building on UE3, as it's cheaper and easier.

UE of any numbering certainly doesn't have any correlation with the art style a developer uses though. That's just silly.

There's a certain arrogance, and something patronising, coming from Mark Rein towards Nintendo. He is almost saying, to play visually amazing games, Wii U owners will miss out because Unreal Engine 4 won't be available on that platform.

He seems to be overlooking the fact that most visually amazing games have been developed on bespoke or other engines, and NOT on Unreal Engine.

As people who enjoy playing games and to a degree passionate about it, I'm surprised people are not critical of these disparaging comments towards one of the most creative companies in the world.

Nintendo and it's 1st part teams have produced some of the most amazing games in thee past 30 years. You either want to see creative, artistic visuals in games or go with the lowest common denominator, the salt & vinegar of gaming engines that is Unreal Engine.

And the likes of Gears looked utterly amazing when they first came out. The engine is a bit old now but with the right art direction can still provide some stunning visuals.

The engine is surely just the toolset. It's like blaming Caterpillar for all the flat pack houses these days.

The person asking the developer the question knew the answer before he asked it, as did we all. It's as close to non news as you can get.

Mark Rein probably wasn't only saying no based on the technical specifics of the wiiU, but also knowing how nintendo deals with 3th party developers.

Havn't Nintendo gone down the Unity route anyway? They've got some deal in place for developers looking for an affordable engine and they're also putting money into making porting games between platforms quicker and easier.

For sure, it doesn't look like we'll see a great deal of 720/PS4 ports, but it'll be interesting to see what we get instead.

    @Raiko101

Sony are on board with Unity now, which might help. MS haven't said anything about their new console never mind what developer tools and engines it supports.

The engine is going to be the very least of the problems when a machine with 2GB of RAM is trying to keep up with machines with 8GB.

... but everyone else (in the audience) laughed too, not just him.

E3 cannot come soon enough for them, me thinks. Nintendo need to show all their games they have lined up as oppose to saying 'a new 3D Mario/Zelda' is on their way ... and allow the public and industry figures to play those games too.

Oh, and a new F-Zero game would be very welcome!

    *wishful thinking*

The problem is that, from the industry tech. perspective, it's a gen3 console and they're all gearing up for gen4. Studio's won't put a ton of effort into porting new engines to it because it's not in their focus.

We've had Wii U for a few weeks now and to be honest, I think it's a pile of shit. There's fuck all worth playing on it and the fact that 360/PS3 multiplats are skipping it is pretty damning. The best thing I can say about it is that the browser is half decent. Nintendo have fucked this one up big time.

It's really not a pile of shit. It's a capable machine released too late in the cycle and only really good for 1st party stuff.

    AKA: a Nintendo console.

Nintendo revealing even more Wii U games at E3 when they've yet to release or even provide solid dates for the ones they announced a couple of months ago, sounds like something you'd find in the How to Fail Square Enix Style guidebook.

It would have been an interesting console cycle had Ninty released this in place of the Wii; 1st party and all of the multiplatform titles of the last 6+ years...

Could have been a very different outcome.

PS3/360 will still have a considerably large install base after next-gen comes out. Publishers are not going to ignore this fact. The plan was for Nintendo to take that 3rd party momentum and ride with it for a few years. Hence why shigsy etc were doing their best to talk to other development teams.

The worrying thing is not that they won't be getting UE4/next gen engine games. That was never going to happen. It's that a lot of current games are not being made on Wii U, and brought out at release.

That is why Nintendo needed to bring out a system seller at launch. That would have created the install-base. Which in turn would have made multiplatform developers tempted to start bringing stuff over from day one, because they would have had an audience. And I mean simultaneous releases. Not second hand scraps with the words "augmented" added to the box a whole year after it's already been lapped up on other systems.

Couple of 1st party system sellers > Install base > Current gen 3rd party support.

Nintendo dropped the ball in this regard, and they need to fix it asap. It was especially important they came out of the blocks with 1st PT system sellers, because they would have had a clear headstart when consumers will now be looking towards the other systems this Christmas. The install base will be more fragmented than it's ever been.

Since when have I said the Wii u is 'ace'? I have grand total of 2 games on it and one of those is a cheap hd upgrade of a Wii game. Zombie u is genuinely good. But that's a very poor offering for a console out for 4 months. Never said any different.

I don't write it off though because I believe Nintendo will bring out some great 1st party games.

    Agreed.

Honestly the gamepad is a great idea. I love having a virtual keyboard on my lap in a Monster Hunter multiplayer room. Something I've not had on a console before. I also love how it's used in ZombiU and how many shortcuts I can create on it in MH.

But yeah... we need more games.
