I think you are all forgetting how long it took for the 360 to get into the position it has. It was coming in from the Xbox, which was about as popular as the Gamecube, so it did not fly out of the gate, despite what your memory tells you. Some official at Microsoft said the first to 10 million wins and then the Wii got there around the exact same moment the 360 did, which meant it took roughly a year and a half to sell the first 10 million and it got outsold in less than a year by the Wii. The PS3, as you said, is also a good example, as it had some woeful sales for quite a while before things got better.
So if you were to compare the Wii U to the 360, its actually selling a little bit better than that did in the same period thus far. Which means that the future is full of possibilities for it. For instance, the Vita showed the first signs of turning itself around this and last week. It's estimated that around 80,000 could have been sold (we won't know for certain until tomorrow) and it might have outsold the 3DS for the first time (seeing as how the 3DS is hovering around 80,000, its iffy).
