So far loving this OS, much better RAM management, my system hasn't been that stable since... forever basically i've had nightmares with XP, Vista and even 7, but this seems like the fine-tuned well built OS that we've been waiting for.

Thanks for Microsoft for taking our demands in consideration, let go the new UI (which is cool and pretty easy to get used to BTW), it's a great OS begging you to adopt it... i couldn't find better words to describe it.

I'm only on HDD, i imagine that with an SSD it can only be much much better.

So I just received my Lumia 620, and I had no idea that it uses a micro-sim.

Should I take a chance and cut my sim down to size or go get a new one? I've never cut a sim before.

Just pop into a carrier store and they'll do it for you.

Most have a little stapler/hole puncher like template device that can do it in seconds.

I say this as I've had mixed success cutting them myself a ratio of 1 success to 1 failure :D

It is actually easily enough done if you take your time and measure it corectly, especially if you have a craft or stanley knife, instead of using a scissors like I did on my failed attempt.

It'll make you appear online all the fucking time on facebook unless you set yourself to invisible.

It'll upload your pictures to skydrive automatically.

    Skype Integration is utter crap.

    It looks sexy.

    That's about it :)

    Come and get it cumslingers!

I will try be smart and wait it out though :)

Does anything know how to get Games for windows live working with windows 8? The client works but games don't seem to communicate with it. I've tried re-installing everything but no joy.

    How did you install it?

I wiped the whole thing and downloaded the latest version from the MS website, rather than letting the game / steam try and do it for me

Works fine, although very slow to connect etc

Downloaded the client from xbox site after removing the previous one and cleaning the registry. Installed as admin and set compatibility mode to win 7. No GfWL games works from origins, steam, or GfWL market place. Bulletstorm will start but I cannot sign into GfWL so cannot save the game.
    I'm running windows 8 64.

@RunningMan This is only a theory... Windows 8 gets shipped with only .NET 4.0 making the cut, previous versions aren't there, even after going to the MS website and downloading the .NET 3.5 SP1 package (which also contains 2.0 and probably necessary for GFWL to work properly) it wouldn't install... because it doesn't have .NET 2.0 already installed (MS developper, yeah i'm looking at you, what's the point of a package installer that already requires some component on it it's just... uh... leave me alone), search for Add Features or something along those lines and you can install it through the OS.

I've just ordered a laptop from the Dell outlet, win 8, i5, 8gb ram and a bonus 32gb ssd on top of the standard 500 gb hd.

I'm upgrading from a 10 year old pentium 4 desktop with a gig of ram so I'm expecting to be impressed with the new machine..
I know the ssd is tiny but it should still be enough for the os with a little spare yeah?
Edit- To clarify - I have no expectations of this as a games machine

The SSD will be big enough for the OS(win8) which is the main thing. It should also have enough left for commonly used smaller apps such as web browsers, etc. Depending on what gfx chip is in it you might be surprised what it can manage gaming wise. It wont be running anything on high settings or playing anything particularly demanding but I'd wager it will run the likes of starcraft 2 and such just fine. I highly recommend getting one of the apps that add a start menu to win 8 too.

@RunningMan While I have not tested this myself I have seen mentioned that GFWL needs installing prior to any games that use it, not afterwards. Whether accurate or not, I don't know.

@Spectral Thanks, put my mind at rest. Good to know it's worthwhile even though it's only 32gb. Looking at a few guides to 8 and it sounds pretty good past all the doom mongering. Going to read back through this thread too and see what advice I can leech!

@MrV333 Once you add the start menu back it is a slightly better version of Win 7. I use start8 which adds in the start menu and boots the PC right the desktop. Start8 isn't free though it is cheap. There are free alteratives although I haven't tried them. With it booting right to desktop it seems to have no downside over win 7 that I've found. You can ignore the metro interface entirely if you wish. However it does have some advantages, for example I much prefer the win8 netflix app over netflix in a web browser.

No. You have to use this thing called google, but I recommend pokki instead, or classic shell.

ed: actually it seems there are are dozens in the store.

Sorry, my point was whether the win 8 app store was more akin to the ios app store or android market in terms of availability of that level of modification. I'll have a look into classic shell and pokki though, thanks for that.

May aswell try them out and see which you like. I know start8 has a free 30 day trial and a lot of the others are free or as cheap. I only went for start8 because it was the only one I was aware of at the time and it works. Given that they are all essentially adding in a funtioning start menu I can't imagine there is a great deal of difference between them tbh. I has a quick google of pokki and I think I prefer how start8 looks but it could just be down to what I've become used too.

Or, you know, try something new and realise that the Start button really isn't necessary at all.

    :-)

I guess it just comes from using so many different operating systems - needing to adapt quickly has become second nature.
