Sure, but only because Vista was a sack of shit. An update's going to look good if its predecessor is terrible. Its point of differentiation was that it worked properly :)

It's about time Microsoft came up with a decent interface that works on Tablets, although I wish they redesigned the main interface to be more accessible, or perhaps to intelligently adjust the interface based on what device the OS is installed on. At the moment, it just looks like a schizophrenic version of Windows 7.

I'm impressed. Apparently you can completely disable that frontend if you want to.

No matter what they do, no matter what they release, I always switch to "Classic Start Menu".

I do the same with XP, I hate the default "Windows Duplo". Win7 made me reconsider though, I kind of like the Aero look.

Windows 8 doesn't seem much of an improvement (if any), looks like a tablet/touch-friendly Win7 skin. Plus, won't backwards compatibility be screwed (ie. non-existent for ARM devices)?

The video neglected to mention it also has an app store, or rather; a WinStore.

So basically it's MS's reply to Lion. And tbh, I think it sort of wins a bit in the style department.

Oh, something else that just sprung to mind, if they're touting "beautiful typography" I sure as hell hope they get halfway decent font rendering. Clear Type is garbage, the first thing I do these days is install MacType on all my Windows machines.

I switch back to Windows Classic, all this shiny slidy stuff annoys me. Just want something functional.

I installed a custom theme, the Aero theme is an abomination.

Doubt I would use it on my Laptop or PC most of the time but looks to be rather good for Windows 8 Tablets which I guess is the point really along with those people who have money to spend on wall mounted PC set ups. Microsoft are definitely onto something with tiles instead of icons and at least this looks good and different. About time MS. As always though, can they attract the masses which don't include people upgrading their PC. If they are going to lock down tablet hardware it could be interesting competition for Apple and Google.

That's surely just their touchscreen implementation. There's no way in hell that it wont have the standard window interface too.
You use page up/page down buttons to navigate those tiles, if you're not on a touchscreen display, according to Engadget's liveblog of the keynote. "Everything" about Windows 8 will be revealed in September.

Funny reading all the Mac fanboys over on Mac Rumours really bashing this :)

Get a decent tablet out for it which isnt to bulky and is light with an SD card option and lots of ram and I'm sold!

It's called dawn, but the name Glass Onion rings a bell.

Yeah, it's got two versions - dusk and dawn. I might have to have a go at installing it again later.

I didn't bother with all the replacements, just the theme.

It's been the only theme that's looked good and not had any issues for me, there's a plethora of different versions with it so I may have been lucky picking the right one.
