Hackers is such a guilty pleasure movie, it's absolutely awful but I can't help but watch it every time it's on.

yes. but the term hacker is primarily for the malicious types. being employed by a company to find weakness in computer security isn't malicious. ;)
Maybe, but a "Rose by any other name" quite a lot of freelance hackers contribute to exposing security vulnerabilities or jailbreak iPhones for example.
They've always been hackers to me.
Though I admit I'm engaging in a semantics debate on the internet so please, know that I'm arguing the point just because I find the discussion interesting and implied charge of words to different people entertaining. Not to be a bastard or anything.

So it's not unauthorised access, therefore different to the term 'hacker' which is what dcp is talking about

In the dictionary reference given above, and this one, and indeed all reputable dictionaries, the word hacker has two computer-related definitions and, at least for now, the one with criminal associations is always listed second to the one that describes a legitimate computer expert.

In fact, the usage of hacker to mean a criminal is entirely the creation of the popular press and film industry.

Before you start sucking each others dicks, can you point out anywhere that it mentioned that these three were in any way responsible for hacking Sony?

All I can see is that they were arrested in conjunction with *plotting* to hack a Spanish federal site but then I don't have my special Sony branded reading glasses on.

    A) Front page?

    B) They quote the register but the register makes no mention of sony

    C) The only thing I cry myself to sleep about is the state of humanity, with particular tears shed for people who care about sony being hacked

Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, which is why a lot of latecomers are going to get caught.

The original lot wont but since anyone with an internet connection can call themselves anonymous, there's going to be a lot of reports of anonymous getting their collars felt, which is slightly disingenuous.

Although I don't see anon claiming responsibility anywhere. Seems like a random hacker.

And people are claiming the whole is fake.
