You can get to buggery if you think Im going to go through all those S levels again for the sake of a gold flag....

    Ok, I might one day.

A brilliant game no doubt, but I'm not so in love with it that I'll play every level through with Mario and Luigi. Some of the special worlds are much too painful to bother with that

You unlock one more level if you get the 5 stars. I will probably leave the game a few months after completing the S levels before coming back to unlock that.

It's just another incentive for replaying the game in the future, really.

As if any Mario game needed an incentive to replay anyway.

Completed this today. well the core game, not the special bits as of yet.

Glorious. Alot of fun. Levels are a nice bite sized feel, sometimes, i wish some of the levels were longer, and the game is relatively easy. But i loved the final boss chase up the castle, really involving, and fun.

To be fair, any incentive to play this again is a a must. Alot of the levels are over to quickly, and done with, escpecially if you bagged the three coins.

This may well be my game of the year and i'm only on world 8 of the regular levels.

It is just a joy to play. I have a retard-smile on my face the entire time. I will probably replay the levels i didn't three-coin and i never do extra stuff in games. This game is just that fucking good.

    A 10/10 and then some.

I did the first 2 worlds yesterday, 3 coined all. It's lovely but it's ridiculously easy, to the point that it's never a challenge, and that really hurts it. I'm all for games that you can just play with no frustration but they needs something to keep me going, which is normally narrative. This has nothing.

It's great level design and platforming, and the nods to the past are cool, but it's just about the gameplay mechanics and they're all taken from the bigger, better 3D games. There's no interesting gameplay keeping it all together like the others.

I think I've replayed 3 of 8 levels to pick up coins I missed or to get the yellow flag (which I'm missing because I'm rushing and making stupid errors), most of them I'm 100%ing on the first try. It's just a walkover.

I'm happy I've played it, and I'll continue playing over Xmas while I'm back home, but it's not on the same level as 64 or Galaxy, or even Sunshine. Not yet anyway.

the special levels i'm finding are a great challenge. Not to hard (yet) but def more challenging than the convential levels.

The first two worlds are easy, Derblington, but would you expect any different? They're effectively extended tutorials. It ramps up a bit as the game progresses - it's very very rare to three-star some of the later levels on first run through.

Admittedly the challenge isn't all that great, but then that's suiting me. The more open ended levels (rather than the linear ones) really reward exploration, which pays off a lot more in terms of gameplay satisfaction.

Kind of, yeah. I know there are unlockables that up the difficulty but the first 2 worlds are 8 (or 10, depending on how you want to count them) levels of the game.

The whole of the main game is essentially just a tutorial for the special worlds, and even then it never gets ridiculously hard - there's just enough challenge in there to keep it interesting throughout. I thought the difficulty level was fine, personally, although the Tanooki suit almost messes it up somewhat.

Oh, well fair enough then. I've found it plenty challenging (but I know it's more because I'm shit than the game being tough) but two worlds being tutorials seemed about right to me. Takes that long to introduce all the game mechanics properly.

It is not really difficult until around world 7 but its lots of fun and at that point you are less then halfway through. Playing without Tanooki would make it a lot harder.

A non Tanooki playthrough would definately be tough.

    Woo-hoo!

Finally got five stars, finished the rather tricky bonus course and watched the not-quite-worth-all-that-effort secret ending.

... I think I shall leave the game alone until this time next year as I know some of the levels a little bit too well now.

I personally think this is probably the best Mario game after Super Mario Galaxy 2 (on the Wii) and Super Mario World (on the SNES).

Finished the normal game last night, the Bowser battle was epic! Definitely a great Mario game but I'm waiting for the real challenge to start.

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

That's a cool video. I knew some of that stuff but not all.

How do you do that forward dive jump that's in the 1-1 clip? The quickest time I have on that level is 38

Yep, long-jump straight after a roll. Best way to get golden flags. :)

Some very cool playing in that vid. Loved the reference to the original SMB with the warp pipe in 1-2

Another Tips and Tricks video. Again I would wait until you have done most of the game before watching this.

Just mopping up the last few levels with Luigi now - unfortunately, my OCD-ish compulsions mean I can't not see that final level, no matter how uneventful it is.

I have to admit, I thought it might be a bit of a chore playing through levels again with Luigi but this is such a joyous game to play, I'm really enjoying it. It's been nice to revisit levels I'd sort of forgotten about, and since I've got all the coins and gold flags already I can just tonk through them.

Really is a great game! :)

I'm up to world 7 on the special course. It can be frustrating at times but is totally compulsive. Only minor criticism, I wish they would have given each world a stronger theme.

Yep, the special levels are pretty damn difficult. Really good though.
