Villa to Arsenal doing the rounds.

    Sounds like a sensible merger.

Was ITKlols last night too. But then:

RT @skysports_bryan: Arsenal have told us tonight they are not in talks with Barcelona to sign David Villa.

Can certainly see Barca wanting to sell David Villa, 31 years old, not looked the same since his injury and doesn't have a clear place in their lineup.

I'm kind of torn. He's a world class player who would bring so much to the team and the dressing room. But he's not played much and we have no idea if he's over his injury it not, and will be expensive for the 2-3 years we'd get out of him. On balance I think we should go for it, but I understand there's some reservations.

No one will try to poach him from us as of next year, as he'll be too old. Which means we get a decent player for 2-3 years without loads of clubs trying to sign him. Sounds like heaven to me.

As I said in the group, it's about time we took a gamble like this. It's not as if Wenger has anything to lose, very few fans would say no to Villa.

I haven't seen anything of him this season, but if he's half as good as he was it's a no brainer. I thought he wanted to stay in Spain though. Didn't that scupper a Chelsea deal while he was still at Valencia?

He's quite famous for never wanting to leave Spain to play anywhere else. He's never wanted to go anywhere else before, and I suspect that may still be the case...

...however, he's coming to the end of his career. Other than Barca and Real, who won't buy him, he's unlikely to earn that amount of money in terms of salary anywhere else in Spain. Not in current climates. So he may be tempted to move elsewhere though.

That's the thing that really worries me though. Not that he hasn't still got it. Not that he's £10-15m for a 31 year old. Not that he'd want £110k a week until he's 34. None of that, I think he'd be worth it. What worries me is that if, on the complete batshit mental chance it did happen, he wouldn't settle in the country and wouldn't be anywhere near as good because of it, and would therefore look to leave in 18 months time to go back home.

I just don't see him playing in any country other than Spain.

He's only been linked with Arsenal throughout this window, and apparently spoke to Wenger in December. From all reports he wants to join Arsenal in this window, the only problem is that Barca are refusing to sell.

He's still been scoring in the few games he's played this season, including a cracker a few weeks back against Cordoba. Definitely still has it.

He would just get annoyed playing with that Arsenal squad. More likely he would take a hit and go to Bayern for a few years under Pep. Overcome his injuries, I dunno.

He's been linked with us before. At least twice in the past five seasons. Once very strongly as well.

My cousin is no longer in the same job so won't have any scoop, but I know last time it was all rumoured they told me there was no chance, as he wouldn't leave Spain. About one week later he was interviewed, saying there was no chance as he wouldn't leave Spain.

If he leaves now, I do worry he wouldn't adjust.

But I'd love to see him play for us. Ideal would be a six-month loan with a view to making it permanent, but that's not going to happen.

Arsenal apparently have enough money in the kitty to buy Villa and pay his wages without impacting them financially, and he ought to give them some much needed experience and nous.

Really excellent player, bit of a puzzle where you'll play him. I think AVB will use Holtby as a no 10, but for me he doesn't score enough to justify that position. I suppose if he lays on 20 goals for Defoe, Bale and Lennon by the end of the season, you won't really care. It's questionable whether he has the physical strength just yet to cope as one of your two CMs in the premier league. Which leaves dropping Lennon and playing holtby in one of the wide positions, switching flanks with Bale during the match.

I'd say Villa is a complete no brainer.

He's got the kind of quality we need and at the age where no-one else would want him so he might actually come.

Sure he's not going to be a quality long term player, but he's going to be amazing for 2/3 years and that may well be invaluable to the club. Especially if he keeps us in that champions league spot and stops us doing a Liverpool.

Thing is, there was no chance of us ever paying what he was valued at back then. And there was no way he was going to leave Spain without playing for one of the big two. The situation now is completely different.

It's true that he might have difficulty adjusting, but that's the risk any club has to take with a non-PL player. Besides, if Giroud can score 13 goals in his first half-season, I'm sure Villa be just fine (and I don't mean that as any disrespect to Giroud).

    @FutileResistor

I think with Sandro out and Dempsey just not delivering AVB will be looking at this as playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 with Dembele and Parker patrolling the middle and Holtby in behind Defoe. That leaves Lennon and Bale to roam from the flanks. No reason to drop Lennon, the guy has been in superb form for about 2 years now.
