Actually, I take that back. They could.

    But they won't.

Well, thinking about it, you're probably right.

Hodgson will put ten men behind the ball in the first two games like he did in the Euros and hope to scrape a draw or narrow win, then try to qualify with 5 points by putting as many goals past Costa Rica as they can.

You can just feel the Suarez vs England drama coming a mile off.

@Baleoce Drama? More like "Suarez scores most goals in a world cup match as England crash out"

I wonder how much of an advantage Italy will have after playing in last summer's Confederation Cup.

90mins of defending.  Italy will always have an advantage.

Yeah with any luck we'll get knocked out as soon as possible so I can enjoy the tournament in peace.
It's why I'd rather we didn't qualify at all. Ideally I'd want England there, of course, but not the media wankathon following them about, the Sun's inevitable hype-frenzy before a depressing 0-0 with Costa Rica sends England out.

You can't say it's not the best tactic though really.

One that backfires and when they get close, put more goals past Costa Rica than the others and fail. So certain.

England will never win fuck all ever, as virtually all the English squad are a bunch of overpaid under achievers, The English game died in the early 90's with the formation of the premiership and massive influx of foreign talent.

Hate to break it to you reggy, but we didn't win much between '66 and '92 either.

I can't wait for Suarez to do something heinous against England and see what his fanboys and apologists say then. Like to see them trot out the same "he did a great thing for his country" line they did back in 2010.

Can't wait for Italy vs Uruguay - a whole new sport could spawn from that game, synchronised simulated diving. Scores for acrobatic rolls on the floor, pained expression and knee holding. Extra merit if the player who didn't even brush against gets a booking, jackpot if he gets sent off.

I doubt anything will beat the drama of Italia '90. Plus, that New Order song was fucking superb.

We were always a decent top 8 in the world team the occasionally had the rub of the green in big tournaments and did pretty well in the 80s and 90s. You also knew the team was made up of top draw talent from first choice players in the top division in the country outside of one or two that had made it big and gone abroad for a bit. Now we are scraping for bench warmers in the prem who are not quote good enough for their clubs first 11 but good enough to be an England starter as we have no one else.

It is fucked, in short .

So ITV and their Italian counterparts have got the Italy game brought forward 3 hours so it'll kick off at 11pm rather than 2am.

Good for them, but apparently it'd be a lot cooler on the pitch at 2am (9pm local time) so well done to ITV for putting their interests ahead of England's.

Can you accuse a tv station of manslaughter / indirect murder?

Sorry what? I'd associate England with a lot of things but having the rub of the green at big tournaments is not one of them.

England's group is great. Should be some really good games for a change.
I agree. They're going to have to play out of their socks to stay in. If they do, good, great. If they don't, good riddance. Win win.

    Yeah I agree.

Since 86 at least, except maybe 2002, England have been in pretty weak groups all things considered, and most of the time they have limped through. I read something earlier on today from Shearer who said that after the 98 draw they were down because they wanted some of the big boys. This time they will need to turn up from the start or they will quickly be on the way home.

So, as has been said, win win.

Wohoo, Belgium got group H. Not to much travel for the early games. Good temperature. Decent but doable opponents, with Algeria in there as a freebie. Yeehaw!

    The Telegraph's predictor

Got Brazil winning the cup against Argentina after a no doubt FIERY AFFAIR.

Meanwhile, Germany choke again in the semi-final against Brazil and Spain crash out to Uruguay in the quarter-final after one of the all-time great performances from Suarez.
