I've googled but cannot find an answer to this: Is there any way to archive conversations? One of my sms convos is getting ridiculously large to the point where opening it to reply/view messages makes the phone unusably slow. However I cannot see any option other than deleting it.
Any ideas? -

Registered 7 years agoWondering if anyone can help me with my Android related problem. I bought a phone today, but I can't seem to get it to start downloading Android apps. It states that it's 'starting download', but the progress bar doesn't move at all (even after an hour or so). I haven't got any other problems with getting online via the phone etc - it's just the market apps that don't seem to want to work. -

I have that problem now and then over wi-fi. I have to switch to 3G to download or try a different wi-fi hotspot. I think some wi-fi routers may be dropping the packets or something like that. I have to say though that sometimes it stays on 'downloading' for ages but if i turn the phone off an on again then the next time i try it it just installs almost immediately.

Registered 7 years agoWell it's annoying the hell out of me. I've tried everything now and I can't get it to download properly. I think it's going to be going back tomorrow and exchanged for a trusty Apple product. -

Can you try a different wifi hotspot? Does it work if you turn on Mobile Data services?
Also, did you provide a googlemail account when you setup the phone? It seems there are some issues with Android and google if you enter an account later on. I reset mine to default and ran setup again as i was having weirdness when i first got the phone. This signature intentionally left blank.

Registered 11 years agoFWIW, the market does have its quirks. The stalled downloads issue is one of them. Sometimes cancelling and restarting several times seems to help. One would think Google could afford setting up a few more servers to handle the load...
Although the download problems happen mostly in the afternoon and evening - increased traffic from the US perhaps. Today it might well coincide with the Droid 2 launch over there, maybe a lot of users are reinstalling the most popular apps? -

I don't know a single person with one.
I think selling 200k a day is a slight exageration.

Android is on every major device manufacturer except Nokia now, I think? There's every chance you have used Android, you just didn't know you were using it. If you've used a smartphone in the last 12 months, and certainly in the next 12, it's likely to be iPhone, Android or (if you're a glutton for punishment) Symbian.

Globally however, Android sales are still well below the iPhone. According to IDC, Apple took 16.1% share of smartphones in the quarter, while HTC and Motorola (the only Android makers, who also sell other non-Android smartphones) amassed a combined global share of 9%. Android’s total share is less than half that of second place RIM’s BlackBerry sales and less than a quarter of the smartphones sold by Nokia, but Android is getting a lot of press to suggest that it is taking over the market, at least in the US. -

Blackberry are shitting themselves - Android is eating into their market each quarter. I don't know of a single Blackberry shop not looking to move to something with lower maintenance, except those with contractual tie ins. -

Registered 10 years agoAndroid is taking off big time.
However, since it was more or less non existant even a year ago, there will be a period where it will be less heard of than other platforms that have been around longer. (The increase over the past six months of its adoption however is meteoric.)
(In other news, Oracle launched a lawsuit yesterday against Google over patent issues and the Dalvik VM that android uses. I think they want Google and the phone manufacturers to give them big bucks.) -

Registered 7 years ago@jellyhead and morriss. It's an LG GT540 that's running an old version of Android (1.6). Every other network feature works. I've pretty much tinkered with every setting I can. The only thing I haven't done is tried a different router via wifi. I've linked google talk/mail etc. Phone is below:

Google are activating 200,000 phones a day.
In June it was 160,000 and in May it was 100,000.
Quite an impressive rise! -

I've had this problem. There is a known issue with google talk so I would recommend playing with this. Try starting a download, going to goggle talk and then logging out. Log back in, go to the marketplace and cancel your download. Try starting and stopping your download a couple of times and then it might kick in. I did this and have not had a problem since.
