I'm looking forward to this. The original was incredible, brimming with satire in typical Verhoeven style. This will never replace that, but I'm hoping it's still the start of something new and exciting. Anything sci-fi without the word "Star" in the title and I'm in. Glad sci-fi is continuing to make a comeback in Hollywood.

When did sci-fi ever go away?
  • Deleted user 13 June 2012 18:26:38
Who's attached to direct it at this stage?

If he's the villain, presumably he'll go back to the British accent.

Viral is promising, so happy that they've kept ED-209 largely identical. I've only seen Elite Squad 2 but it's a very good film, didn't realise the director had signed on to this. Suddenly I have high hopes.

    Bit more info

Directed by Jose Padhila, ‘RoboCop’ stars Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Safe House) in the title role, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. Gary Oldman plays Norton, the scientist who creates RoboCop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation. Samuel L. Jackson plays Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world. Both Hugh Laurie and Abbie Cornish are reportedly in final negotiations to join the film. Laurie as the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, and Cornish as Alex Murphy’s wife.

"I have my take on it. In the first RoboCop, when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts."
Not sure I like the sound of that, sounds a bit too Batman Begins if they are going to spend more time dealing with his genesis. Would much rather the remake cuts to the chase and spends more time showing Robocop as the badass he should be.

I don't know it Alex Murphey the human cop was quite interesting in the first one, I'd like to have seen a bit more of him.

Is this the geeky looking scrawny guy from the Killing? Interesting choice.

But you learnt enough about him through being Robocop. He was still dealing with shit while kicking ass. Hell, he was still dealing with it in Robocop 2.

Hopefully the terrible performance of New Total Recall may make them pause.

I dunno, sounds as ridiculous and tongue in cheek as the original. Not sure I see the difference.

I choose to believe those details aren't true. I choose to hope they are a misguided attempt at a joke on the part of the author, or maybe even something to lower expectations so it seems great in comparison. I chose, because any other option will bring great despair.

@nickthegun If they're going to do a new version I don't see the harm in not making it a carbon copy of the original. I also didn't really see what there was to be as offended as that AICN twitter guy was. I mean let's face it most of his tweets were for the attention as as such were hyperbolic to the hilt.

But I don't see why deploying ED209s in the Middle East is so bad, for example, nor that the look of Robocop isn't a copy of the original.

Any Netflix library in the world for a couple of quid a month? Gimme!

Makes sense really! Nice cop to help an old lady across the road, then pimped-up armour shit to take down a drug gang.

The first one kept his gun in his fucking leg, so something along those lines could be cool.

See this here is a shit idea... so basically it is a film of them building Robocop!?! Where is the fun in that?

It's not as if this remake will suddenly cause the original to pop out of existence in a poof of smoke. That film has already weathered a couple of bad sequels, a terrible TV series, a string of even worse made-for-TV movies and a cartoon series for kids.

Fuck if they want to take the concept and try something different then they'll be hard pressed to do much worse.
