Norton IS is fine IMO. Have used it for years. What makes it bad in your book, Dirtbox? Resources?
Resources, false positives, most of the bloat being there to protect the program rather than your computer, intrusive, scaremongering, PC World bundling stinking sack of dog shit.
Quite a dislike then! I kind of agree on resources (last few additions being much better) but i'm not plagued by false positives, find it quite customisable but also good for new pc users once setup correctly. I used to hate it years back when it would cripple your resources and generally screw up your system but after using it again have not had any problems in the last 4 years
Ditch it, try Avira for a month and feel the difference.

Yeah, the point is, though, that he was told that Trend was OK but would let a few things through, so he installed AVG as a backup to catch the things Trend missed, the irony being that it was a windows bootcamp partition that he didnt use for email or internet, just for CAD.

A little knowledge being a dangerous thing and all that.

The big buck network McAfee stuff isn't so shockingly poor, but then they aren't trying to play Left 4 Dead 2.

We use McAfee here in the office. It's the latest version, is kept fully up to date and costs a fortune. It also completely cripples most of the PCs here and regularly allows the helpdesk staff to happily infect everyone else's machines with horrible shit.

The 'weekly check' on our build machine (with a 500gb drive) takes over four days to run. I shit you not.

    Hah, lovely.

It also uses the same detection engine as lovely Norton.

I think you got it wrong in the first post DB. You didn't spell AVG right. I know how you love AVG. I google AVG, and it pops up "Dirtbox recommends AVG!". You know you love it!

I don't even bother with an anti-anything anymore. I don't do dodgy stuff with it and I have all the stuff I'd actually want to keep backed up. I do keep meaning to try Avira on my second PC though, just to see what it's like. It's my MMO machine, and going through those massive patches again should it get all infected would be a right pain.

Also pitching in with the Norton hate. Horrible, horrible software.

Kirby is the man! Even if he wasn't, he'd just ingest and become one.

We've been installing the big bucks version, which to fair, doesn't seem too bad, at least compared to the retail version.

    lol!

    googled
30 Nov 2009 ... I'm considering just letting Comodo take care of all of it though and I * strongly* recommend you do, fuzz, because AVG isn't worth a shit. Edited by Dirtbox ...

Avira also comes up with false positives.

It's just told me I had two trojan infections, both of them in emulators. Which aren't infected. Also, a while back it kept bitching about a selection of 32 & 64K demos I'd downloaded. Wouldn't take the hint that I wanted them left well alone.

But that's just the problem with trying to identify things from CRCs of tiny chunks of data :/

To be fair, it does, but they're usually one hit deals as you can usually order it to shut up about files you know to be safe.

Er, btw some demos have irc worms in them. It's amazing what you can squeeze into a 32kb demo!

    Great job, DB.

I'm using the fair alternatives from your list. I was considering either scrapping or replacing ZoneAlarm with something more lightweight but I do enjoy that vocal approach, at least I'm asked when anything changes (plus I do enjoy the red/green traffic indicator in the systray). I'll try out Comodo on the netbook though.

I've been looking at it, but I'm not realy convined. I've heard of it deleting explorer.exe from a windows install so it's either a mac fanboy in disguise or has a good portion of important safeguards missing.

I used it for a year and had no issues with it. It was fast, reliable and didn't take up as much resources as most of the other anti-stuff out there. I'm only trying Kaspersky because Barclay's had a free offer and i fancied trying KAV for a change.

I run Avira at home after running Avast for years, aside from the nagging my only issue with Avira is the number of false positives but there again i do have a bunch of Sys Admin tools which *could* be classed as port scanners etc.

I'm still trying to find a free/cheap Firewall i get along with though.

@DB, I had my issues installing Vipre but that was back when it was beta and it's never deleted any system files of mine. Unless they were dodgy that is :)

it's very good. recently got the VB100 award for picking up every single wildlist virus with no false positives at all. for my part, i tend to run it on my malware testing machines and it's picked up every single dodgy zero day russian installer file i've come across while using that machine. they come from a dedicated antispyware background and have a lot of rather advanced tricks for blocking files that the more traditional sec firms probably don't even know exist. they also have one of the best research teams i've ever come across.

I know, but the example I had in mind was (IIRC) a 32K demo which had an ASM-coded Spectrum emulator along with a specially-coded Spectrum demo to run on it. The detection kept popping up every time I went in the folder, too, even though I told it to ignore it.

Granted, that was several versions ago and I'm giving the latest a go on my Aspire One. :)

AVG is shite, though; it let two quite nasty bastards past which led to complete re-installs of XP to get rid of them.

I'm just a little worried about it not featuring on any of the AV tests.

Incidentally, this is the current state of play incase anyone was wondering.

    From here.

That's very cool. Next time around I'll have a good long, hard look at it. For now I'll stick it in the OP and a fair alt.

I'll stick nod32 in the fair pile too, I feel I'm being a little unfair to the old stalwart.
