Yup you are on Hoth permanently Whizzo.

I've had restartitis but have finally settled on a map.

I have a full on engineering puzzle on my hands at the moment. I've hollowed out a batcave down at the bedrock and there's ore everywhere, iron, diamond, gold and redstone. Minecraft Porn basically.

Trouble is I also seem to have opened the gates of hell. Somewhere above me is a lava lake and a cave network packed full of nasties.

I've fortified my position with an underground room that I can fall back to but if I try to go up or out I'm either burnt to death risking a flood or assaulted by Skeletons, Zombies and Creepers.

It's a near on impossible prospect but If I can control the lava and clean out the caves the pay off will be massive. Loads of all types of ore and I can make a huge Obsidian forge with the lava and a water spring.

Quick question, if you die in this and respawn is it the same world? ie: you could go and find your house again etc..

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Fences are very handy here - can't be jumped over and are quick to replace if a Creeper manages to blow them up. That, and a combination of torches everywhere to try and avoid spawning in the first place.

I've also restarted a new level, which looks promising. Not in terms of ore found (very little so far) but it's a very pretty landscape!

@mrpon - yup, if you die you drop what you were carrying and are respawned. You can pick up your drops and everything else stays as-is.

Yeah you spawn back in the world at a predetermined point but you drop everything you are holding and only get 5 mins to get back to it before it's lost.

I lost set of diamond tools and weapons to lava last night :(

Yes, you respawn in the same world.

Discovered last night that my impregnable cliffside fortress wasn't quite as tough to get into as I'd thought and ended up with a creeper exploding in my courtyard.

Tonight's project: a wall around the cliffs, and an expedition into the zombie caverns at the bottom of my mine.

I'm hopelessly lost in a bottomless maze of cavern, the only thing keeping me sane is that I can head upwards by jumping and plopping blocks under me, then if need be, punch the rock above.

I'm on my last pickaxe and it's in the red.

The nasties were freaking me out too much, I set the difficulty to peaceful.

God I really should be working now.

Is it just me or does anyone feel a bit like a heartless vandal when you scoop up the source of an underground river and it dries up?

I mainly use stone pickaxes, but carry iron ones for when I find the nice ore. Stone tools are so cheap they're practically free so I'm happy to use them despite being a little slower at mining and not lasting as long.

I carry a crafting bench and a furnace around with me when I'm having a wander, so iron tools aren't a big deal. It's worth it just to save time when you're hacking away.

I suppose I should conserve my iron a little more, I haven't found nearly as much as I'd like.

Protip: DO NOT right click a crafting bench when you've got a bucket of lava in your hand, an inventory full of diamonds and no real idea where you are in relation to the spawn point.

I've only found up to Iron, no gold or gems yet. Have a feeling I'm not going deep enough...

Going deep I usually dig a 5 x 5 trench and go down in a spiral all the way to the bedrock leaving a 3 x3 'pillar' in the middle of the spiral. (bring Torches, lots of torches).

Providing you get the bedrock without falling to death/being eaten/burning to death then clear out a small room at the bedrock.

Now head back up, make lots of ladders then head to the middle of the pillar and drop a 1x1 shaft straight down placing ladders every other block and the odd torch.

You've now got a super fast way up and down via the chute and the spiral can eventually hold a train track which is a cool way to get to the basement.

Build a nice warehouse over the top of the sprial and a fortified room with doors (and some nice floor tiles) at the bedrock you're set for some serz pro mining!

Not that I've found any diamonds but using a chest for valuables just in case is a good idea. I've not burnt up anything with lava yet but I did accidentally drop my water at the top of my massive two block wide staircase which then proceeded to wipe out all the torches I had put down one side! I shall be putting them on either side in case of future mishaps.

Seeing the water cause all the lights to go out before it hit the bottom was quite nice though.

Iron only appears in cliff faces or below sea level.
Gold only appears underground, below sea level.
Diamond only appears deep underground, near lava.

Oh and in case someone doesn't know. If you put two chests together they combine into one big one.

I just bought this but the Mac version is really unstable :(

The FPS keeps dropping from 50-60 FPS to 2 FPS and it's crashed on me afew times forcing me to hard restart my iMac which is something I've never had to do before.

I can't help getting sidetracked by pointless engineering feats. I'm currently building a skybridge from one mountain top base to another. No point really, but curiously satisfying.

The one thing in this game that really stands out is the sense of transitioning from a poor, helpless creature who has to hide in a poorly lit burrow for the first few nights to a heroic engineer who's tamed the landscape. It's unique in that respect, I think.

I'm absolutely itching for a collaborative MP Survival server. Come on PiD!

About that - mind you aren't standing on a block as you're hacking it because you can fall out of the world. It just happened to me.

So how are you supposed to survive the first night? I build a reasonably fortified little place to wait it out, only something just blows up and takes out most of the wall and I get gangraped by spiders. :/

Sounds like creepers. If they get within a block of you and have direct line of sight they go BOOM!

Caves are best for the first night and ideally you need light.

If there is no coal about for torches but plenty of stone and wood build a furnace or two out of stone inside your cave and stack them with loads of planks for some temporary light. They burn fast though so make sure you have plenty.
  • Deleted user 9 September 2010 16:38:59
Yeah, I've made a little twisty passageway into my cave now so they can't see me. :)

Oh you need to smelt something as well to get the light. Stick some stone and wood in the furnace and you get smooth stone instead of the cobblestones which make for nice tidy walls.

Once you have a decent stockpile of coal/torches you are all set really.
  • Deleted user 9 September 2010 16:44:42
Are there any audio cues as to when the day cycle has started and the monsters fuck off from outside? I'm making a nice deep tunnel down at the moment but am running low on coal.

Or do you have to do something mental like craft your own clock first?
