Lots of deals on the 670 ( as low as 160) and 680 at the moment kinda regretting the 770 right now. Can someone please comfort me and say the 770 was a good idea, going from 570 Sli it seemed the only viable card.

Not regretting 4GB though as I noticed a few games are using 1.5GB, so only a matter of time before they meet or even exceed 2GB.

Is there such thing as a budget gaming laptop, or is that a contradiction?

I know some people aren't fond of the AMD A series, but it seems like they can at least provide a fairly good base for a cheap gaming laptop setup.

So yes, the 770 was the better choice. (4gb over the 2gb probably wasn't though)
How much RAM is on yours? I notice yesterday you mentioned you have an i7 CPU now after months double-teaming people with Roddles about how an i5 was ample so I wonder if you're about to volte-face on this one too? ;)

I can't quite believe that SLI is still buggy after all this time. I mean, it all started out so well with the Voodoo 2 and sort of went downhill from there.

Any reasonably priced shops that put it altogether for you other than Overclockers?
I bought my last PC 3 years and about 100 pages of this thread ago, think it was a shop called Easy-PC which was great but doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I could probably do it myself but don't want to mess about if paying nearly a grand... I'd probably make a rookie error like getting the wrong PSU and frying the motherboard.

Anyone recommend a budget-ish upgrade to an ATI 6870? It's just not quite cutting it in Arma 3.

    An Nvidia 660ti for 150 or a 670 for 180.

With the Altis update on ARMA 3 i'm looking for an upgrade from my AMD Radeon 6800. Running with a Phenom II X6 1055T and 12gb of 1600mhz RAM so I think i'm okay on that front.

Are there some reasonably priced budget cards(175-ish?) at the moment that would be a worthy upgrade or is there anything on the horizon that might be worth waiting for? I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to cards.

Hey BillMurray, how's your PC holding up?
I remember we bought the exact same machine at the same time nearly 3 years ago.
Starting to look at upgrading now, something quieter this time, it's a noisy bugger!

I was trying to remember just now who it was that bought the same machine as me! It's definitely a noisy so and so. Luckily I invested in a decent headset so it's not too much of a problem.

The only thing else i've done is doubling my RAM which was pretty cheap anyway but now i'm definitely thinking about a new card and a hefty PSU(think mine is just a 450w PSU. It's already died on me once in the past but i think it was a falty unit).

I seam to remember reading somewhere that the PC version of BF4 will be very simliar to BF3 on PC. Will basically be the same engine with a few extra particle effects. Of course going PS3 > PS4 will be a massive change but we already got the premier version to start with.

If thats true then we can use 3 as the barometer, if you can run that well then 4 is ok.

OK I'm upgrading my graphics card. Currently got an old radeon 4850 which is running at over 100 degrees and crashing everything.

Can anyone recommend a cheap, quiet, cool replacement?

I want to be able to play some games but I'm not looking at a powerhouse, I thought about the gtx670 but figured the rest of my PC would just let it down and it wouldn't be worthwhile.

Running a core 2 duo e8400 and 4b of ram

Why not just get a new PC if finances allow for it?
If not, anything above a 6870/GTX 560ti is overkill.

You get a really bad bottleneck with that CPU and the current crop of cards.

    I'd recommend a 560ti.

    @StixxUK

If you want to stick with AMD then a 7770 is a good choice. Around 80 in most places and can run most games at more than 30fps. If you buy one from Scan, they are offering a free game with one.

Went for the 7870 IceQ X for 140 on OCUK's today only offer after reading this article.

I guess if I decide to upgrade the rest of the guts later that'll still be pretty reasonable.

/waits for someone to tell me I'm an idiot

    How about a Z620 at 12,000?

Depends on your budget I guess.

p.s These are for my work, I wouldn't spend this amount of money if I had it!

What the hell are those Nvidia Quadro's anyway? Was shown one at work today, surprisingly slim.

Aimed at business use rather than gaming use or something?

Quadro cards have the pro OpenGL support turned on. 32bit Windows 7? How old are those photos?

I want to build a new system that's quiet, small and takes a full-size graphics card. Cash isn't really an issue but I'd like the lot to fit into a small fractal case or something similar. Has anyone built anything like this?

Pricing up a new PC, hard(ish) limit is 500. I'm basing it on the RPS "buy a PC for the same price as an Xbox" article they did in June - is there anything that I'm missing or could do better on with the following list?

    - i5 4430 130
    - ASRock Micro-ATX mobo - 37
    - 8gb Mushkin DDR3 1600 - 37
    - 2gb 7870 card - 150
    - Fractal Design 1000 case - 27
    - XFX ProSeries 450w PSU - 35
    - 22" 1080p monitor (80)

Total is 496 on PC Part Picker but I know I can beat that by 40 at a local store (CCL) and I already have a transferable Win7 license plus speakers/headphones, keyboard, mice etc.

So I then have 40 for a HDD. My only question is whether to go for a small SSD now and add a terabyte platter to it later or go large now and use the SSD as an easy "boost" later

How about all that other stuff you get with the xbox that you aren't including, wireless controller, blu ray drive, headset, FIFA 14...

your PC is way overpriced :-)

Don't be a dick, you know the umpteen reasons why that PC will be a better value proposition than a console :-)

(PS, I already have a controller)

Shit, seems I'm already in - a 7870 came up on Amazon for 112 and I had to hit "buy".

Oh well, here we go :-)

That's a great price for a 7870. Shame you weren't looking when GTX 670s were 160 about 5 weeks ago.

Your build is pretty much spot on. I would go for a 120/128GB SSD first but that's because I can't imagine going back using an HDD. The OCZ Vector for 80 is the obvious choice.
  • Deleted user 2 October 2013 18:38:15
The same 670s that are on sale for 300+ right now? O_O Yep, that is a shame :-D

Still, the 7870 far outstrips anything I've ever played and the plan is that the base CPU/mobo combo will be enough for me to upgrade a year or more down the line
