So how much would it cost me to build a system that would play the witcher 2 at a decent 24 inch high res resolution?

Not 100% up on resolutions but I'd have thought that an i5 with that 7850 2gb would be more than fine. Which would prob be around the 700 mark.

I'd expect anything with an i3/i5 and a decent card (so prob 450 or over) would play it at a good resolution, but you'd have to lower details at the lower end.

Ooft that is a lot of money.

@mowgli actually, looking at the specs for that game, you could probably do it on a cheaper machine. The 24" screen suggested you wanted really high res!
  • Deleted user 15 December 2012 21:47:59
Expect to play on at least high/very high when I spend near to 500 on a system!

@mowgli having looked at the game specs I imagine you would easily do it at high specs and res on a 500 machine as long as you didnt choose components badly.

You could play Witcher 2 at 1080p res, max settings (everything other than the system killing ubersampling) at a decent framerate on a sub 500 PC easy.

My i3 / 4gig ram / 6870 setup cost about that much a year ago so you'll get more bang for your buck now...and I get 40 to 60fps on that game depending on what's going on.

Glad to hear it. Witcher 2 appears to be the benchmark for graphics at the moment (graphics being the one and only reason to consider PC gaming).

I would say there are games which are more demanding, but witcher 2 is very pwetty

Also, graphics are an obvious reason to consider PC gaming but DEFINATELY not the only reason.

Steam sales, a huge and thriving indie scene and a huge modding community are as important as the improved graphics and performance.

Also, the exclusives - try playing Company of Heroes, Sins Solar Empire, DayZ, Hotline Miami, Dear Esther, Stalker Complete, Silent Hunter, Totes War, Planetside 2 etc on a console...

Zero interest in indie scene or modding tbh. I don't have enough time to invest into gaming as it is, I just fancy playing some of the big PC games in super shiny detail.

I find the indie games to be utter shyte to be honest, by and large. Steam is a dangerous, beautiful thing though
  • Deleted user 15 December 2012 22:31:34
Yeah, tried doing the whole indie thing for gaming community kudos a while ago. Would take a big budget destroyer over an indie any day of a week.

Fair enough. Don't be so quick to discount modding though, graphics mods can add a lot of that "super shiny detail". Stalker Complete for example, Skyrim etc.

Suppose, did play about with the graphics mod for Stalker but my laptop didn't handle it very well. Want to spend my bonus on something shiny and trying to convince myself that 300 on a Wii U would be better spent on something else!

Thanks everyone. I think I'll go with that Radeon.

If anyone has a spare one lying around I'll trade you a brand new PS3 Super Slim.

Oh yes, the mods I've tried for things have been ace, particular the ice ones for gta and various f1 2012 ones. I played sleeping dogs for the first time last night on pc, and fuck me those graphics are stunning with the hi Rez pack installed

You'd be missing out in most of the best games whilst playing utter shite with that attitude.

@CrispyXUK - indeed. There's a lot of very average games that people rave about being indie but there are some brilliant ones also.

The scale of pc games are also a big benefit of them. There's simply nothing like planetside 2, total war, guild wars, BF3 64 player on consoles.

Its not necessary how pretty they are that makes them appealing, but a completely different type of game. Personally I think paying 500 quid for fancier graphics is an utter waste of money if all you're going to do is play games that are also available on a 360

Before I order, is this up to scratch? Seems like a good price.

Why buy a PC and play those dull tests!?
  • Deleted user 16 December 2012 04:02:20
@Progguitarist Yeah, depends what you wanna do with it of course.
  • Deleted user 16 December 2012 08:12:02
The best indies are ported anyway so bit would be stupid to buy a pc mainly for indie gaming.

@andytheadequate well the 2gb is better, but if you are limited on budget the 1gb for that price is a very good buy.
I fretted over this when I bought my card recently. Most of the reviews I read around the web suggested that unless you are gaming at a higher resolution than 1080p then you are unlikely to notice any improvement in performance with the extra 1GB.

I decided to save myself the 20 and spend it on games instead!

Some games do specify that you need more than 1gb (sleeping dogs for one) of VRAM to cope properly with some of the ultra stuff. Definitely not a vital thing though. Gta 4 is handy when it shows you how much ram it is using when you crank the draw distances and traffic density up

Just for those interested, got my pc, for 366 quid its an absolute beast. Every game I've played has auto set itself to high or ultra high.

Only thing I've found though is its extremely loud when its got loads of stuff running. When I say loud I mean in comparison to xbox etc.

Fresh tech seem brilliant for those who are considering buying from them.

@kadooosh - likewise. I usually turn things down to medium as my computer is far too loud when playing games on high

As much as i'm tiring of gaming in general, i realised the other day that i tend to end up at my PC when i do play something (Steam and other cheap digital stuff FTW) but my machine is starting to creak a bit on newer stuff.

I have a decent case and usable PSU so i'm thinking of getting:

    Processor, MOBO, RAM
    GFX card
    General storage drive

I'll probably slap a 64gb SSD in there for the OS as well. Any thoughts?

Double the ssd - not much more and fully worth it
