Who was it who said that the founding fathers didn't flee Europe from persecution. They fled to obtain the right to persecute.

They also pay a larger portion of it on health care but it doesn't even cover the whole population. It's fucking nuts.

@ Crispy - I'm sure some of these ads are on YouTube. Track them down, but be warned, use the computer of someone you don't like as you may be unable to control the urge to smash the monitor.

This is one of those things that hammers home exactly how far to the right of the political spectrum US politics is.

Don't forget that they spend more of their GDP on healthcare than nearly every other country too.

Universal heathcare in the US would save them a LOT of money. Sure, their taxes might go up a bit, but their insurance premiums* will drop enormously.

*not to mention the crippling debts for those who need surgery but weren't covered by their insurance (or didn't have any)

Speaking of adverts - slightly off-topic - there was a report on Indian border security on Channel 4 today. Anyway, they posted clips from the Indian security services recruitment video. Tried to do a quick google for it, but can't find. Hunt it down if you can. It's fucking hilarious. Looks like a Rambo B-movie.

Funny how he forgets the whole line - LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Life is an inalienable right BGiE. It takes Creationist 'thinking' to ignore that essential part of the Constitution and pretend universal health-care - everyone having the equal right to not die unnecessarily - is some commie plot.

When you say 'spend more of their GDP' do you mean the government or the people? Because if it is the government then there must some serious black holes with regards to how the money's getting used.

Problem is the so-called "Blue Dog Democrats" are bought as well, that's what's holding things up. Fuck the Republicans, if the Dems would all unite and get on board, it'd be job done.

They do have Medicare(?) for the poor, but that's pretty much bollocks. You still have to pay, but afterwards.

I've never understood the ethics behind it. Surely you can't deny someone treatment because they don't have insurance.

I did have to life when I was over there recently. One of my sister's friends was saying how a friend of theirs had lived and had children overseas and it was really cheap because it only cost them $5 to give birth. They were shocked that it's free over here, and even more shocked at the after care mums in France get with their daily respite carer paid for by the government.

    As a percentage of GDP.

When you look at per person you have to remember that there are close to 50 million uninsured in the US, which is a sixth of the total population. Take out those over 65 around 13% of the population and those in poverty, who are covered by Medicaid, and you're looking at more than one in five of Americans have zero health care

    Pathetic.

Well the article I read was that she had to remortgage her house and take out a huge loan, and her medical expenses topped $100,000. Turns out it was just a cyst and not a tumor.

$7,500 apparently. That's including prenatal care for an uncomplicated, natural birth. Depending on insurance, you may pay only a percentage of that. (The girl in the link paid 20%)

That surprise me not one bit. There are loads of similar adverts on the TV - and some saccharine pro-reform ones, so your nausea is covered from both sides - which must be raking in cash for all the sprains caused by severe o_0 ing.
