Down to other teams to not give away daft free kicks. Lyon must be kicking themselves. Only saw the 2nd half, but thought they played well.

Haven't watched a live Newcastle game for quite some time (no sky sports) but managed to watch this. Haven't been so fucking frustrated since the last time I watched them. Seriously bad at end products. Shitty decisions fucked us up too. Cisse needs some competition big time. We need 2 new strikers in the summer.

Funny when people say this in all seriousness. It is literally only because the team behind him functions and moves so well that Bale has been able to do what he has been doing.

it's very easy to see when you compare how he is playing now to how he played in a 'free role' under Harry 'Just run about a bit' Redknapp.

Holtby has to start matches now. Showed more signs of life in 25mins then Dempsey showed in 65

Yeah tbh Cisse has been awful all season. He has absolutely no confidence. He goes on a massive run where he doesn't score then when he does everyone says he will get his confidence back but it just hasn't happened. He is offside more than any other player I have watched and when he stays onside he spanks it high or wide.

It's all very well having all these players to create chances, but who is going to finish them? We missed a trick by not buying a forward to compete with Cisse, unless we are going to put Gouffran up top, after all in France the general consensus is that Pardew is mad for putting Cisse up front instead of Gouffran. Cisse has got what he wanted; a run in the team up front. He needs benching.

As for tonight, we played well enough. Poor decisions and finishing cost us. Shame as at their place it will be really tough. I'd be surprised if we get through.

Can't remember the last time a player was so central to a team's success. Spurs are far from shit without him, but they would be far from where they are.

Might get called up on Fellaini, but we have done just as well without him. In fact our best streak was when he was suspended. Not that we dont miss him.

How has no one anywhere mentioned that the guy who scored the banger for Lyon, should have received a second yellow card for his blatant dive. Weird.

No, it's not "literally only" because of that - it's because his confidence is sky high, he's improved as a player, and his manager is doing a very good job of utilising him. It's a mixture of things added to the fact that he's a very high quality player. I think he'd still do fairly well even if the rest of Spurs weren't so good.

You do wonder how they'd get on without him for a spell, just as you'd wonder how Liverpool would cope without Suarez, Chelsea without Lampard (!), Arsenal without Walcott and Man Utd without Van Persie.

Steven Taylor after the game tonight: "It was our best performance in a while, we just didn't win. Tonight we showed we have goals in us."

    Bless him. It was 0-0.

Spurs are a one man team. We've yet to lose a league game without Dawson in the team, and have always been top 3 on form and results when he's been fit for the last 3-5 seasons. Ledge.

Aye. But it was 0-0. Cisse should have had at least a brace without the offside goals. His finishing was shocking and the mentalists will hardly be trembling in fear of all the goals in us.

I think it's a remarkable we won tonight with only 9 players. Dempsey and Adebayor are actually useless at the moment. Would love to know how many assists Bale would have this season if we had a striker who could actually convert his crosses. JD is a decent striker when he's fit and confident, but I almost feel Spurs may as well take the Spain approach and play 4-6-0. Get Gylfi and Holtby involved and just leave out the completely ineffective pair.

I don't understand this "1 man team" business. When I see a team sheet with just Gareth Bale on it and he wins against 11 players I will hold my hands up and say ok we are a 1 man team.

Granted he has been key for us this season, and we would certainly miss him if he was out for a spell. But most teams have have one or two stand out individuals. Where would United be without RVP? Liverpool without Suarez?

We have had a few other players who have been immense for us this season - Dembele, Sandro, Dawson, Lennon and Defoe have certainly all played their part.

People said we'd fall apart without Modric. We are pretty much where we were last season and he is warming the bench in Madrid having been voted their worst signing ever. Its a team game....

I think that when a player is in such good form, the rest of the team tend to give him the ball as much as possible so everything tends to go through him. If was ever not playing, the team just adapts and maybe other players see more of the ball.

Any club who's fans do this sort of shit should just be kicked out of the competition.

Admittedly that wouldn't actually stop them being Nazi's.

I don't think it's anything to do with specific clubs. I think the Nazis are just targeting us at Euro games. It sounds like it might even be the same group that attacked us in Rome.

naturally of course it will be a token fine to the countries FA and things will carry on as if nothing happened.

Wow what a run by Bale, he's very special.

Tottenham shouldn't have a problem with Lyon but they seem to be struggling, they can get in Lyon's third no problem then have no ideas after that.

Anyone watching Spurs - did the ITV coverage inexplicably leave the footy to watch a coach driver parking up on a loop for about 15/20secs?
    Really bizarre
