While true, consistency and logic isn't really the point. It's just about not being a dick, which for some reason people choose to label as political correctness.

Yep. It's also not an excuse to be racist just because the rules are not consistent. It's really not that hard anyway to chose the correct term once you know themand most of these terms are just short hand for ignorance in the first place, the Asian one is a perfect example, it is possible to distinguish between Chinese, Korean, Japanese and all the other nations encapsulated in that term but that requires spending time with/in that culture to see the difference.

I can tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese people, for the most part, but that's because I've been watching films from those two nations for years.

The picture is also very US-focussed.

When I say 'Asian' I invariably mean Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, etc.

There is plenty of logic to it, if not consistency. Only someone with no sense of their own privilege or the history of the races / words involved would think otherwise.

    Brap, brap, old chap.

@imamazed That's because in Europe we use Oriental to describe people from China, Japan and Korea etc. In the US that's offensive too!

Last time I checked, calling someone black was a no-no in the US as well.

True, and that works for Japan because it's a small country with a strong cultural history and language, but China is a big place and I suspect that as you travel from the ex-Russian -stans into China you'd see many faces that you might think were out of place, at least partially because historically those borders were so porous and partly because there's never been an exact dividing line there.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

There are about 15 different races in China. The most common is Han.

Also I bet Pakistani people get really annoyed by been called Indian in America.

@mal That is a fair point, the vastness of China would make it difficult to identify that precisely.

You are a factory of sadness.

This is the obligatory comment about how race is a ludicrously arbitrary concept as used.

Also, that picture shouldn't please you. It's smug and wrong.
