I have a fairly large, round and firm lump just bellow my tooth. It is the tooth in which I need to get a root canal, but can't afford it right now. It doesn't hurt unless I prod it too much. What should I do? I don't want to pay 40 just so the dentist can tell me within 5 minutes that it will go away soon or just prescribe me some standard antibiotics. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well imagine that you needed a plumber. You'd pay 100 for an inspection. Or, you'd pay your garage 60/hr to put in an air filter at your car service. Or you'd pay 40 for a game.

But health? Fuck no! Rip off!

Go to the dentist. If it is an abscess and it flares up properly you'll gladly pay 400 to make the pain go away.

    Horrible things.

    o_O at the thread.
When I woke up this morning it has gone down a bit, still doesn't hurt though. Has anyone had a root canal before, what is it like? Does it hurt as bad as it sounds?

Nah, root canal is fine. No worse than a normal filling imo. Go and get it sorted!

Never had a problem with dentists. Hate doctors and particularly hospitals. They smell of death. Dentists are fine.

Not had a root canal, but those I know who have had one haven't really been in pain afterwards.

Go to the dentist. If it is an abscess and it starts to give you pain you will seriously regret not getting it sorted when you could. At that point worrying about 40 will seem very silly to you.

    SO WHAT HAPPENED?

DID YOU GO TO THE DENTIST????????

    I need to know!!!
  • Deleted user 20 November 2008 22:40:27
    It went away :S
But I still need to get these root canals sorted. I'm trying to see if I can sneak onto an NHS dentist, but not sure if it is worth the time and effort. And I also have no money.

That's good that it did. I spent a fortune on my teeth a few months ago, it was well worth it IMO. You only get one set and unlike losing you hair, losing your teeth does not look "cool" :) - you can;t lose a few and say ah to hell with it, i'll just get rid of them all and go bald-mouth.

So looking for a thread on the matter and it turns out I've already asked you lot the same question. Just got a similar, but bigger, lump on the other side at the very back of my mouth. Because it is at the back it is very sore and uncomfortable. Well it seems to have grown since yesterday so I just went into the toilet and performed some DIY dentistry. Which basically involved stabbing the fucker with a metal toothpick until a mass of blood and puss came out. Lovely. What remains is still the hard lump but I'm hoping that will piss off soon. I'll give it a week before phoning the dentist.
