Chessboxer, you can use that tool to format using FAT32 past the 4GB limit.

Oh *penny drops*, there's been a miscommunication. The 4GB limit I'm referring to is the individual file size limit, not the partition limit of the HDD.

My HD media files are all bigger than 4GB and cannot be saved on to a FAT32 drive which is why (to me) an external HDD would be useless.

    No.

    (That's okay, you're welcome)
Errrrr... no? What do you mean no? The PS3 will only read an external HDD if it is formatted to FAT32. It will not read NTFS, HSF+ or even its own propriety file system if the drive is external. Therefore, my previous statement is correct.

    (Apology accepted)
Syrok wrote:So there is no advantage of internal HD really, if you consider the price of external compared to internal ones.
The advantage of having a larger internal HDD is that you can store a larger amount of DLC (from the store) and user created DLC on it (e.g. UT3 maps and game types) with all of your PSN games, game saves, patches and install data without having to delete stuff to play a new game which may have a 4GB mandatory install (you cannot store any of that data on to an external drive and use it in game).
You see, reading all this makes me think i'm going to mess it all up when i do it as i havent a clue what it means!

I want to replace my 80GB with a bigger drive, but then use the 80GB drive with my PC to back things up on.

    Two questions then:

    1. If i buy a new internal drive from somewhere, can i just pop it straight in my machine, or do i need to do anything to it first.

    2. To use the 80GB drive with my PC, i assume i need to do something to it first before i can use it, but i am confused by all this NFTS/FAT32 business....is there a simple guide for this process (as it isnt usually in other guides!)

    Actually, three questions...

    3. Can anyone recommend a good hard drive caddy that'll hold the 80GB drive? Or will any one do?

    Thanks everyone!

    @uk_judgement

1 - all of these HDD's will work in the PS3. Take your pick.

You should back up your save game data to an external drive like a USB pen drive/PSP's memory stick etc... Do the same with photos/music/video too if you can't get them again from a PC/camera/mobile phone.

2 - The 80GB HDD can be used as an external drive with the PC but once you connect it to the PC, you will lose all data currently stored on it. In XP/Vista, you will have to initialize the HDD before you can format it (right click on My Computer/Computer > Manage > Disk management > right click on the drive which has a black bar above it).

You can format it with XP/Vista to NTFS (this will not work as an external HDD for the PS3 though), or you can use that swissknife program linked above or Windows 98 to format it to FAT32 (you would be able to use it as an external HDD for the PS3).

    3 - Badda Bing!.

    @chessboxer

Thanks for that. One question though, arent the caddys listed there mostly IDE as opposed to SATA, or doesnt it matter?

    Cheers :)

Right, I've got a £50 play 320gb jobbie on the way. A question, I'm going to back up to an external HDD, this HDD already has stuff on it, will this be an issue?

No it'll be fine. It justs creates it's own folder for the backup.

It will depend on what the existing drive is formatted as.. I had an existing NTFS one that i had to format as the ps3 would not do a thing with it. It wouldnt even let me shrink and create a FAT 32 partition with swissknife, i had to reformat the lot!!

if you have no spare space on a pc to dump the stuff back onto just be careful partitioning or you mak lose the drive contents.

I've just bought an 80GB PS3 and a Western Digital 320GB 2.5" SATA drive, I installed the drive and turned it on it says that it needs to reinstall an update of the operating system from the playstation website, (it tells you this in the manual as well).

All this isn't the problem, I have the file but no means of putting it on my PS3, I was concidering buying a USB Memory stick just about 4GB, (which is more than enough, the file is only 140MB) but which one can I get and which one will work with my PS3...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

THIS was what I was concerned about. ^

Thankfully, it didn't occur during my swap.
As for a USB stick, I've used a cheap Technika 8GB (Tesco Value essentially) with no bother. Just depends whether you've got a local store who stocks them.......

You can read this ? You've helped ruin the place. :(

Oh well, at least the bod on the phone was nice and helpful. 7 - 14 days for a replacement, going to stick the old one back in. Didn't know that if you want to send your PS3 back in for repairs you have to hang on to your 60GB drive... so going to store that away.

Not sure it helps but I did read that the screws are easier to remove if you run the PS3 for a little while to heat it all up.

Ok lads, i'm upgrading to a 320Gb HDD this evening, just to summarize, is this the correct order of the steps included on the whole thing? :

    1) Back-up the existing PS3 HDD data on a usb stick.

    2) Take off the existing 40Gb HDD.

    3) Insert the new (320 Gb) HDD into the PS3.

    4) Restore via usb stick the back-up data of the previous HDD (40Gb) to the new one (320Gb).

    5) Voila', everything set (?)

Thanks in advance for any replies.

As I understand the process (having never done it) this is correct. I would very much like you hear your experience of the process.

also take note that if you have Singstar songs on your HD you can't back them up, all songs have to be re-downloaded

I would guess this would also be true for GH/RB tracks/track packs.

i think if you use the backup utility it drags everything off. My guitar hero stuff came over with my full backup but I couldnt back them up individually.

you will have to load each game at least once for your trophies to reappear ;-)

    edit: bit slow today

Im thinking about getting the 320gb hdd for my ps3 (have the 80gb at the moment and with around 6 or 7 psn games and 15 or so disk based installs + playstation home and a few demos and videos I have only around 6 or 7gb left!)

My question is I don't have an external hdd to hand and don't really want to buy one just for this.. I do have though an 8GB memory stick in my psp, will i beable to back up to this? I don't mind reinstalling all my games again or redownloading my psn stuff.. as long as my game saves and system state stay intact. what is the size of the average backup file and would i beable to do it using a psp + mem stick rather than external hdd?

    Correct. With a few additions

EDIT: Log in to PSN first and synchronise trophies
    1) Back-up the existing PS3 HDD data on a usb stick.
Edit: Use the PS3's backup routine to do this don't just copy over from the game saves folder etc. It saves settings and file permissions and will also copy protected files.

Best plan is an external hard drive and use the PS3's backup routine to back up everything. Drive will need to be formatted to FAT32
    2) Take off the existing 40Gb HDD.
Be careful with the screws. Use a screwdriver that is a good fit for the screwhead. Apply downward pressure into the screw whilst slowly increasing the turning pressure and eventually the screw will snap free. Same goes for the drive caddy
    3) Insert the new (320 Gb) HDD into the PS3.
    yep
    4) Restore via usb stick the back-up data of the previous HDD (40Gb) to the new one (320Gb).
    yep
    5) Voila', everything set (?)

    Synchronise Trophies
