Hmm, probably a bit misleading then that they advertise co-op. People would assume it's easily done as with modern games.

Registered 11 years agoSS1 has the better story and has some seriously nice features that SS2 doesn't. SS2s character customisation was pretty neat though and it's one hell a lot nicer engine-wise. Both good, but SS1 does beat SS2 for me.-- boobs do nothing for me, I want moustaches and chest hair.

It also fuels my ocd in map exploration too - can't leave a level without getting everything

Any idea offhand if the re-model mod for SS2 (that made everyone look like they were from Time Splitters) works with it?+1 / Like / Tweet this post

Registered 3 years agoPersonally, like the paragraph says on the mp page - it's not really meant to be played co-op - you'll ruin the atmosphere
Part of the terror is being completely alone, with barely any ammo, in a darkened corridor and all you can hear is the hum of the spaceship and a growl further down the corridor
Whereas the first one has this, but also has amazingly fun upgrades like futuristic rollerskates

Registered 10 years agoWell, that was a painless install.
1920x1080x32 is supported right off the bat so this is probably a new compile, and as such any previous mods that patched the binary will almost certainly not work.
I'll let some other people do the pathfinding on which mods can be applied before I go about tinkering.IT Monkey and StickyPiston Minecraft Hosting Support

I played level 1 yesterday using System Shock Portable. The mouselook mod really helps. Being able to play at a decent resolution also helps as the default setting mean that the textures are rarely seen anywhere near their actual fidelity. Got to level 2 and forgot about the surprise, tried to escape but the elevator door was blocked.

There's also the same amount of available resources in MP, so you either learn to share and play very co-operatively or let one player get all the goodies and escort the other player(s). Unless they tweaked it for this version.IT Monkey and StickyPiston Minecraft Hosting Support

Registered 3 years agoI'll have to give the ss2 gog version a go. I can still get my disc version to work, but it's a bit of a faff, and certainly doesn't support 1920
And the SSP has just finished downloading, so lets see how that improves the cumbersome controls for ss1psn = quaddy456

Registered 10 years agoIt binds 'e' to toggle mouselook. So you'll be hitting the 'e' key a lot, but it does make looting a lot more efficient. I believe there are some shortcuts to looting, maybe holding down ALT as you click but SSP messes with a bunch of the default bindings so good luck with figuring that out.
It seems that the GoG release of SS2 incorporates the NewDark 2.4 patch, so no need to go and try to implement that.IT Monkey and StickyPiston Minecraft Hosting Support

Registered 3 years ago@Tiger_Walts - Yup, see what you mean about "e". Still, it's loads better.
The only other thing is that the higher you set the res, the less my mouse moves left and right, for some reason. And you can't alter the mouse axis speed as far as I can see, but setting the res to 800 600 makes it the best of the res/mouse-movement ratio.
Soon as it started, I was engulfed in nostalgia! Can't wait to get stuck back in!psn = quaddy456

I run it at 800x600 simply because it becomes unresponsive as soon as I set it to anything higher. It displays at the new res and the mouse pointer moves but it stops responding to inputs.

Back to the GoG release of SS2
Because NewDark 2.4 is already installed it's already set up to accept mods. There's a mod folder called 'DataPermanentMods' that you just extract your mod zips to. The game will use these files in preference to those in the default resource repositories.
However, it's recommended to run the latest SS2Tool and repatch it completely as it's a later version and contains more fixes. This does change the mod folder to 'DataPermMods', but also gives you a 'DataTempMods' which lets you try out mods before committing them to the Perm folder.IT Monkey and StickyPiston Minecraft Hosting Support

Registered 6 years ago1995-2001 was arguably the greatest era of games yet. GoG alone captures a significant part of it and i'm glad gamers today can experience a period which effectively decided game design for the decade after and longer.
But seriously, I have no time. Now I suddenly have SS2, Settlers II 10th anniversary, KotoR on the go. GAH!
Btw, what is this Deus Ex new vision mod? It makes the game look practically 2003! How have I never seen this before? -

Registered 10 years agoThere's an option to turn on Bloom in the cam_ext.cfg file.
At first I didn't want some silly full screen Vaseline effect and ignored it. But then I read the notes in the cfg file and whoever added the effect made it both tweak-able and with aesthetically acceptable default settings.
You can change the bloom radius and strength, which is a good start, but you can also change the tolerance. That way you can either go for full on Vaseline or have a glow around just the very brightest objects.
There's also a FOV setting which defaults to 90. If you're playing in a widescreen resolution, then don't worry too much about changing it. The FOV setting is for 4:3 displays, the game automatically widens the FOV for wider aspect ratios.
You can also add custom resolutions, perfect for Eyefinity displays.
There's also head and weapon bob values, if the defaults make you queasy.IT Monkey and StickyPiston Minecraft Hosting Support

Registered 2 years agoI'm rather new to Gog and PC gaming in general. Overal I'm very happy with the Gog service, a bit saddened that Cryostasis was deleted from their library. I wonder if more modern games will be added to it though? It'd be great to see DRM-free versions of Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Metro: Last Light, etc. on there.

Registered 6 years agoPretty sure the original Bioshock had its drm removed a couple of years after release. Unsure about the sequel and Metro. Googling confirms Bioshock 1 did indeed have all DRM removed and that Bioshock 2's has been "scaled back", whatever that means.
