Its supposed to be a from-the-ground up re-write.

What do you expect exactly from the graphics?.. Screenshots can only show so much - there's much more to it when you see it in motion.

i just hope the frame rate will be fixed - and the online aspect. Teleporting players and balls really fuck the online experience up

You know you're in trouble when all IGN can say is "it has some of the most pleasant looking grass we've seen in a football game to date"

The animations seem to have the same key poses as the previous games too. You can tell that from screens too.

No way is this made from the ground up.

hmm, i went for PES in 08, I can't decide for 09.............last time I would of wished I went with Fifa, but even when the graphics and licences suck, the gameplay, and the way they animated the ball is great at PES. every year a hard decision, and the days when i alwaysw buy both are over...........

Although copying is lame, they really need to copy FIFA's 10 vs 10 "Be a Pro" mode for online. I'm not sure they can pull it off though, given that they're struggling with simple 1 vs 1.

Aside from the obvious improvements they need to make (online lag, frame rates, cutback tactics) I really hope they put some real effort into the whole package.

Master League feels so empty and hollow. Little text updates on my players giving interviews is 1980's shit. Gimmie some depth dammit! Have more than a dozen kit types and prevent players from running the same animation at the same time. That kind of stuff!

If FIFA09 doesn't fuck up the engine from UEFA 08, I'd have to think very hard before buying PES 09

I'm genuinely interested as to why Seabass and his team are incapable of producing a technically proficient game. Visually PES is shit every year, and 2008 has awful framerate and lag issues in addition to that fact. I can only imagine that Konami must be applying the thumbscrews in order to get a new PES churned out every year regardless of quality, since it's become such a cash cow for them.

Pro 2008 hardly changed from the previous one. If you had it on the PS3 then the frame rate may have been bad, but it's been perfect for me on the 360. The online stuff was pretty lame but it was still the best football game last year, gameplay wise. I'm already leaning towards pre ordering this already.

Yes, I'd say that was about right. Sitting on laurels.

There was always going to be a time where the game engine was replicated (and possibly surpassed) by a competitor unless big improvements were going to happen. The incentive for PES was never 'great graphics' or 'licensed teams' as FIFA had these, it was the way the game *felt* like enjoyable football.

And now that UEFA 08 *feels* more like football than PES, they've got some serious fucking work to put in - either technically or gameplay related - to get back on terms.

Incorrect -- it got a lot worse. I actually re-purchased PES 6 a couple of weeks back for a few quid, and the difference in gameplay between it and 2008 is staggering. It's a so much more realistic rendition of the sport, with none of the headless chicken football that infests 2008. It might not have changed much visually, but the two could scarcely be further apart in gameplay terms.
it was still the best football game last year, gameplay wise.
It's interesting that a lot of Pro Evo fans don't mind that their title of choice is now a much more arcade-orientated title than FIFA, considering that it was greater realism that supposedly made everybody fall in love with the series in the first place. PES 2008 is about as realistic a football game as Virtua Striker 2 was.

The 360/PS3 pro evo 2008 was pure wank

Gameplay wise PS2 pro evo 2008 is still pure gold

Gameplay wise, I also think PES is still the better game but when it comes to online multiplayer, FIFA is light years ahead. Online multiplayer tops my list now so I'm leaning more towards FIFA '09 but we'll see.
I think FIFA '08 and UEFA '08 are great online games plagued by morons who may have skills but don't know how to play football. The series has probably become too sophisticated for some, hence me begging Konami to shamelessly copy FIFA's online modes so I can go back to PES :)

Alright I'm going to say it, FIFA 08 was bland. There are you happy now!

FIFA 08 is so slow. You can pass to a player perfectly no matter which way the ball is coming to you or which direction you are standing. Player models look the same. Every shot looks the same, whilst in Pro it seemed that you could be more creative in the way you scored. Through balls never work and the only time they do work is when a player is in so much space you may as well just pass to him normally. More keeper fuckups (crab walking, don't run and gather the ball and instead just stare at it while the striker runs towards it from a mile away). Very, very, almost impossible, hard to score a header from corners. And most importantly, not fun to play against friends.

Put that in your pipe and, eh, smoke it, yes, smoke that pipe.

I second that, FIFA isn't as good as PES gameplay wise, although it's not shit. I bought it just for online.

Try UEFA 08. I didn't really 'get' FIFA 08 either, but UEFA 08 is the best football game from the past two years...

Pro Evo has been getting continually worse sine PES5. Euro 2008 is the best football game I have played since.
