    Having a plug away at this again. Good fun mostly, except for the boss battles - specced for stealth, pistols and martial art. Currently stuck invading the mansion in Russia. Knife guy is a pain!

    That boss battle is the main problem with this game if you go the stealth route, rest of the game is perfectly viable to go the stealth route but for that 1 battle your fucked.

    I hate to use a glitch to get him stuck in the stage as I was too stealthy :-(

    I didn't find that one too bad, and stealth actually saved my arse!

    I started with a Chain Shot, tried to run away unsuccesfully and got smacked a bit, popped on Stealth to let Chain Shot recharge, then did it again. Obviously some other bits of shooting inserted between those steps, but without the invisibility skill I'd have been toast.

    Chain Shot got me out of most situations in the game though. I think I was really lucky to have chosen that as the skill to invest in whenever possible - I think one of the issues with AP is it's a bit too easy to get it wrong (I did piss away a good few points at first).

    I tried what you did DFawkes, but got impatient and died again. I actually did get him glitched in the end and then just whaled on his, feeling slightly guilty...

    Chain Shot is brilliant, and I mainly use it for when things go down the plopper. Current tactic is: sneak around and take out as many as I can silently, then run around and melee them - only takes 3 hits with lots of points, then chain shot for anyone left or if they gang up on me.

    It's really grown on me. Already looking forward to playing it again a different way.

    Picked this up at a sale recently.

    I finished it on the PC about two years ago. I remember loving it.

    There's one thing I hate about the Xbox version, however: Chain Shot's targeting reticle.
    What the fuck is that about? Yellow crosshairs on a yellow background? It's bad enough having to struggle with the analog sticks in order to line up a shot, but when you have to fight against the interface as well, squinting all the while, it's just cruel.

    Also, I'm finding it very hard to stay stealthy. I get through 3/4 of most missions undetected. Then some guy spots me and I have to play cover-shooter for the remainder.

    This game was much easier with a mouse.

    Just do what I did invest in the auto cloak when spotted skill.

    The boss battles totally ruined the game for me. They completly fucked with the game's balance regarding character progression as well as the game's strengths and overall themes, and simply should never have come within a thousand miles of being in the final release. They were even more jarring than DX: Human Revolution's.

    That fucking dreadful escort mission was an embarrasment too.

    It's a shame, as a bit more polish and a lessening of some the awful level design and balancing issues (of which the bosses were easily the worst), AP would have been one of the games of the generation.

    Flawed diamond, it was so close to being one of the best games ever made.

    It feels unfinished because it wasn't finished, funnily enough.

    That escort mission was so bad I've completely forgotten there was an escort mission.

    I don't let boss imbalance ruin a game so strong in so many nice ways.

    Sukov* or something, the one where he kept dying and triggering fail states, with little you could do to stop it except run around out of cover like a mad man CQCing everybody and hoping one of you don't die?

    As obvious an example of bad level design as there has been this gen. How could you forget?

    There's an escort mission? I'll have to google this...

    Ah, buying one of the Intel things changes it to a sniper mission, which is what I did. Was still a bit of a pain, but still not too bad.

    Yes it's a pity they don't make a sequel using player feedback and learnt mistakes. I'v just started playing this again last night after picking it up for 3.50 for the PS3. I played it 5 times on the 360.

    They shouldn't be ignored though. The lead designers should've known they'd be a dreadful fit the moment the outlining design document was finished, and should definitly be criticised for that. Basing a game around such character development choice (as well as narrative choice) but then clearly labelling one style as the 'correct' way to spec yourself is inherently flawed at a basic design level.

    I'd spent far too long on some of the bosses after speccing my character for stealth and infiltration that it definitely coloured my opinion of the rest of the game, and fairly so.

    Yep the game at first regarding combat can feel crap, but once you start levelling up and upgrading it's rather quite good. I love the martial arts.

    So I finally got to play this game and while there were some cool things to it, ultimately I don't like it. Doors suddenly closing and not reopening when I wanted to go back and loot a room, Mike never entering cover when I want him to, and entering cover when I don't want, horrible boss fights, not a lot of variety, very linear, kinda short for an RPG...

    There are also the rough edges: gun mods not sorted by type (makes comparing them harder), saving not possible when pressing start during the "leaning back from PC" animation etc.

    I liked Mike though. I succeeded in deliberately making him into Dudebro McDouche, some of his lines were really funny and the story is cheesy, but Swiss, not analogue.

    This game with the MGS5 or DXHR engine and mechanics would be cool stuff.

    when i first started playing it, i thought it was fairly basic and poop and not my sort of thing...sort of mgs-lite....

    once i started unlocking and upgrading, i treated it as more of an rpg and loved it...sure it's got rough edges and a share of shonkiness, but it's one of the games i remember most fondly from the last gen...

    Agreed and one of the few games that had legitimate different endings depending on choices made in the game.

    Loved this so much. It was janky and had broken things and whatnot, but it was so good.
