My mother in law has only one kidney, does fine. She's a bit miserable, but I don't think it's connected.

    cheers, lads

yep , impressed with how quickly you move when you;re on a pathway rather than the general nhs route...

that's the blessing, that she can carry on with one...we've just got to hope the fucker hasn;t found its way elsewhere...but then the doc at a&e was telling a few horror stories of people who have been in with broken bones only to find out it's riddled having spread around....and i'm hearing a fair few stories about sizeable kidney tumours...

@drhcnip Wouldn't listen to much to the bad stories mate. They told my Nan before Christmas that there was nothing they could do, 4 months later shes responding stupidly well to the treatment she's had so far. Never give up hope is what I'm saying, I guess.

aye, maybe i worded that wrong, heads a bit spinny at the moment...our main concern is the size of the bugger....however, as i've spoken to people, sizeable ones seem to be more common than i expected so i was, in a fairly crap way, expressing a positive...:D

thanks, though - the little anecdotes help a lot - all too aware of the shitfests out there and i'm not blinkered about the possibilities but you rarely hear the little success stories until you get involved on threads like this, i suppose...cancers never been a big thing in either of our families (one uncle, non-blood, died of a brain tumour and thats it) so this is all fairly new....

just thought i'd update a little - been a mental week or so...

the days until the specialist appt were fucking horrible - all sorts going through your mind...

anyway, saw the specialist on weds and the second scan still wasn;t available but it was basically an initial meeting to get to know her and gauge suitability for different types of treatment as well as giving us all the info, help packs etc... they rang again after a multi-disciplinary team meeting yesterday to discuss the probable path - the other scan results had come back and, thankfully, there's no sign that it's spread to any other organs so we are, effectively, dealing with removing the kidney and tumour etc (a radical nephrectomy) then progressing from there regarding further treatment, rather than immediate concerns about multiple tumours...the bugger's been there about 8 years though, apparently, which is terrifying in a way but i think, with kidney cancer being a very slow grower, this has helped in terms of it not spreading so may be a blessing...

one added complication is that the tumour, because of its size, is pressing on the renal veins which can cause haemorraging in surgery, so she has to have an additional procedure to embolise them the day before surgery - we don't have a set date as yet because of this as the procedure has to be done in xray the day before the main surgery so the specialist nurse is currently looking at rearranging dates etc to make sure this takes place...

so, moving on slowly at the moment but the way ahead is clearing slightly - i'm just thankful there's no spread so, hopefully, lifting the fucker out and burning it will be a great start...they'll then consider further treatment e.g. chemo following the biopsy etc...

a very quiet house atm - she's doped up on morphine most of the time and we're both exhausted but we could be sitting here with it being a lot worse so thankful for small positives and mercies...

    @drhcnip

Keep strong and positive, it's the best you can do for your loved ones right now; and use this thread to vent some frustration whenever necessary.

Hope all goes well with the surgery and overall treatment.

I rarely read this thread because cancer has picked off my close family - my little brother as a child and the only cousin I gave a fig about about 18 months ago - and frankly I'm terrified that someday it'll happen to me, so I try to just forget about it as much as I can. My Dad got it a few years back and has recently been given the all clear however, so that kind of gives me a bit of hope. I'm rooting for you and your wife drhcnip, genuinely.

    F Cancer.

    Stupid new page.

cheers, chaps - only just seen some of these posts - overwhelming how much people pull together over this sort of thing...

just giving an update...both ops went well as far as we know - there was talk of removing the spleen as well but, once they were in there, they left it which i'm assuming is a good sign...she was in critical care for a few days after then on a ward for a few days and now home recuperating...still got the drain in so we need to monitor and measure that and go back tomorrow to check it but she seems to be recovering ok...one of the most amazing things was the fact that the wound from the op, about a foot and a half long, is glued together - no stitches apart from a little anchor one at each end...

they seem to think it all peeled away cleanly so its in soak for biopsy now...we know its a stage 3 one due to the size and spread so assume the biopsy will give more clues about the grade so we can get our heads around the way forward...

a few hurdles jumped now and the major surgery over with so thankful for that

thanks again for the support, guys
