I'm fairly sure I tried that...

    sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts
I still can't save the original hosts file, only a duplicate. And I can't access the folder to delete the original hosts file (which I'm not certain is a clever idea either).

    What shall I try next?

    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

I'm out of my depth... So how do I edit the hosts file and save over it, without duplicating?

What are the permissions for the hosts file?

    ls -l /private/etc/hosts

You get command not found when you try to run nano?

Edit: Stupid me, you did say you were on 10.8.3.

Check drive for errors? Repair permissions?

I'll try those later on at home.

I've repaired permissions but still the host file is locked and I can't unlock it :( IS there a way of overriding this? Gaining permission?

    Could be a flag, too.

    Do:

    ls -lO /private/etc/hosts

The flag that could cause this is uchg. If it's listed, try:

    sudo chflags nouchg /private/etc/hosts

    sudo vi /private/etc/hosts

Use arrow keys to get the the last line then hit i and start typing your entry, once done hit escape to exit insert mode then type :wq (this should appear at the bottom of the terminal window) hit enter and it should save & overwrite the current file.

...and the app Nick was referring to

OK! So got my second hand MBP 15" through, 2011 model. The guy's description on LE BAY was "scratched bottom but pristine lid". This translates to scratched to fuck bottom and lid that is a bit dinged on the corner.

Luckily I am not OVERLY fussed. I got a MBP for 700 with a dual HDD/SDD setup, reasonably new generation. It would be nice if I could get a new bottom to get rid of the scratched to fuckeryness though.

Anyone know of anywhere I can get a lower case part from? Or is it going to be USA eBay.

Also the thing has seen 200 cycles of use, so will need a battery change in the future I'm sure.

Did the same in my MackBook Pro. Cor, that's a nice upgrade :)

I still don't know why it was chugging in the first place given it was a top-of-the-range (at the time) i7.

The processor really makes no difference. With 4gb, the minute you open more then three tabs in chrome your machine is crippled.

Well as I usually have 10+ that would probably explain it. It's a relief as usually RAM seems to make little-to-no difference to general OS-use in my PC experience.

Windows is better at reserving memory for what it needs to do, but things like chrome still batter your memory.

But, yeah, 4gb just isnt sufficient on a mac now. Its 8gb minimum, really.

I got quite lucky, too, as it's only the other day that I realised I didn't have to prise my screen off to add additional RAM. 3 screws at the bottom was all it took. Is 16 the maximum you can put in?

Fuck me it was dusty, though.
