I've had limited experience with Steam having only installed it for one recent release. I don't think I like it much though.
I didn't like the fact that I got Skyrim a whole day before release but couldn't even install it. "You cannot install this game because it is not yet released." Thanks Steam, try telling that to the Xbox and Ps3 players who've been playing it all week.
Also, last week my internet went off fora couple of hours. The ISP waffled about some fault in my area, but I was more annoyed because I couldn't play Skyrim. Why do you need an internet connection to enable the offline mode?
