It's to do with sizing the viewport for portable / mobile devices. If you switch over to HD mode, you can do pinch zoomy stuff. Sorry for the inconvenience.
But isn't an iPad the "lead" portable device? Why disable this functionality? It's the only website I have ever visited on my iPad that actually strips away one of the device's core functions.
