Warner unveils F.E.A.R. 3

Due this autumn on PC, PS3 and 360.

Warner Bros. has unveiled F.E.A.R. 3 for an autumn release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

It doesn't appear to be called F.3.A.R., as suggested by the Spanish magazine leak last month.

Series creator Monolith Games will only collaborate on this project, with Day 1 Studios doing the bulk of the work.

The story follows spooky girl Alma's two sons, Point Man and Paxton Fettel, who can be played co-operatively through the campaign. Point Man's a super soldier whereas Fettel has telekinetic powers. Both have "distinctly different abilities", apparently.

Helping make the game scary will be Hollywood director John Carpenter (Halloween, Village of the Damned) and writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night).

That's all for now.

Knew this was coming, but... no Monolith?! Then what are they up to then?
  • cianchristopher #2 2 years ago

    John Carpenter? Cool!

They should just have the theme from Halloween playing non-stop for the entire duration of the game. That's the most unsettling horror theme music in film, I love it!
  • INSOMANiAC #3 2 years ago

Lets hope its better than F.E.A.R 2 which was the very definition of average/dull.

Heres a hint, dont take everything unique about your game and dumb it down.
  • ParanoidZombie #4 2 years ago

John Carpenter???!!! Best game ever, unless he's involved in the soundtrack too ;)

EDIT: ok clanchristopher, but aside from halloween, his music is not that great

They just need to tone down the constant jumpy bits and make it a bit more creepy instead of plain scary.
  • Rodriguez #6 2 years ago

Wasn't John Carpenter a fan of the original FEAR game or in some way involved in the development? If Monolith aren't fully involved in this sequel then I hope they are at least working on a new Condemned, which I personally prefer over the Fear series. The grizzly bear attack in the second Condemned was shit scary, as was the freaky department store in the original! Not forgetting Mr.Tibbits too, AHHHH!!

    John Carpenter... o________________________________O

Series creator Monolith Games will only collaborate on this project

means Monolith is working on something else (Shogo2??), and that's good news
  • Nithron #9 2 years ago

Dude. Halloween? This guy is responsible for The Thing ffs. Screw Halloween.
  • menage #10 2 years ago

Meh, haven't even played 2, and didn't finish 1, since I got sick of cubicles.
  • Old_Books #11 2 years ago

Love the F.E.A.R. games and with any luck Carpenter will tap into his late 70's/early 80's talent and not the bilge he made in the 90's, (with the exception of In the Mouth of Madness). Would have preferred Condemened 3 originally but not after the immense disappointment of the second game (the single worst change in characterization I have ever seen).
  • ChthonicEcho #12 2 years ago

As I had previously said, there was little need to be worked up over F.3.A.R. Not only is that not the title, but this sounds like a very good idea for a game, especially with John Carpenter attached to the project.

I only dislike the co-op aspect. I adore that particular element in all games except horror games. The game simply will not be scary if you share the experience with a friend, with whom you can just laugh all the terrors off.

    Edit: @Rodriguez

Agreed. I prefer Condemned, but I love the first F.E.A.R. almost just as much.

    Oh God! John Carpenter!
    FEAR 3 GOTY?
  • bodypopper #14 2 years ago

Give Carpenter the score duties (Assault on Precinct 13 and Escape From New York both had great scores too) and give it a decent ending that doesn't say 'here comes a sequel, get your wallet ready' so obviously please.
And shake up the slo-mo dynamic and I don't mean add more mech bits. At least the telekenesis sounds like a development though co-op is a bit blase (can two people be scared at once?).

With John Carpenter onboard this could be brilliant, it can't be worse then the heap of steaming shit that was F.E.A.R 2
  • BOBBYLUPO #16 2 years ago

Carpenter's pretty much coasting on his name at this point in his career. You can't really begrudge him when you look at how many genuinely great films he gave us in the 70s and 80s, but it's still a bit disappointing that the guy who brought us Halloween, The Thing, The Fog and Prince of Darkness also gave us Vampires and Ghosts of Mars.

  • MiY4MOTO #17 2 years ago

Looking forward to this as I enjoyed both FEAR games, but I did prefer Condemned.

No Monolith tho? Here's hoping they're too busy making another No One Lives Forever game. More Cate Archer please!
  • Hunam #18 2 years ago

Day 1 of Fracture fame. Would rather Monilith to be honest, but Day 1 do need someone to give them a chance to be honest.
  • George-Roper #19 2 years ago

After initially hating FEAR 2 (10 mins in) I shelved it for months. I then took some time to try it again and really enjoyed it. So much so, I grabbed the DLC to play as one of the cloned soldiers.

FEAR and John Carpenter? Whoa now that I wasn't expecting at any point in this lifetime. My favourite fps and director together at last. All we need now is JC and Vampires 2, show that Twilight shite how it's really done.
  • ISeeEverything #21 2 years ago

Beautiful , Looking forward to it , just don't understand why everybody hates FEAR 2 , OK is not a masterpiece ,OK is not better than first FEAR , but is definitely not a bad game , actually is better than most shooters , I just think all this hatred is a case of "great expectations" .
  • the_mtfr #22 2 years ago

    John Carpenter ftw!

Haven't seen his movies mentioned by EG but like Nithron said... THE THING!
  • miiiguel #23 2 years ago

EDIT: ok clanchristopher, but aside from halloween, his music is not that great

I love all John Carpenter's soundtracks, and Haloween's is not even my favourite, that would be maybe The Fog.
  • miiiguel #24 2 years ago

disappointing that the guy who brought us Halloween, The Thing, The Fog and Prince of Darkness also gave us Vampires and Ghosts of Mars.

To each its own obviously, and while I admit Vampires is not very good (still like it though, but I'm totally biased), Ghost of Mars is slapstick horror with a brain, like it very, very much.

Though, the seminal, awesome, the bestest of all Carpenter's movie is In the Mouth of Madness.

Now that's awesome. Film was no classic or as good as NY but it still sits proud in my dvd collection thanks to JC.

One question: which one of you assholes gets to die trying to stick me?
  • DUFFMAN5 #26 2 years ago

Why bother, Fear 2 was totally boring.
  • Haloboy #27 2 years ago

If FEAR 2 was boring I'm a typing lamp post. Once you got past any misconceptions that it was just going to be FEAR 1 all over again it slowly but surely came into its own. And the AI on the hardest difficulty was at times just amazing to behold.
  • SpaceViking #28 2 years ago

I'm going to keep an eye on this but FEAR 2 left a really bad taste in my mouth.
  • Baranga #29 2 years ago

Lol, according to the trailer it's still called F.3.A.R.

Wasn't John Carpenter involved with the CBM64 / PS1 game "The Sentinel" ?
  • Bmovie #31 2 years ago

Hopefully Monolith have finally decided to do the right thing and are making Nolf 3!
  • SteveB #32 2 years ago

I always thought that Manhunt had a John Carpenter vibe about it.

As others have said, I'm hoping this is better than the poor FEAR sequel.
  • IneptPercy #33 2 years ago

I still don't see why everybody gets bad with fear 2, gameplay it was good/average, story was amazing. Which to me makes it an above average game.

As for this, sounds like it should be great, will hold back the excitement for when I start to see it.
  • TheTingler #34 2 years ago

@alasdairm: He did the music for the PC/PS1 remake 'The Sentinel Returns'. Which was frickin' awesome.

Day 1 of Fracture, MechAssault and the FEAR console port? Ick.

It's interesting to note that Monolith have never done more than one sequel to any franchise (barring mission packs and DLC). FEAR2, Condemned 2, No One Lives Forever 2, Blood 2... they prefer to make new stuff than linger on franchises (I'm looking at you Activision/Infinity Ward). If they've got a new game in the pipeline, and they must have, I am tremendously excited... and if that turns out to be NOLF3 or Blood 3, I'll STILL be excited!
  • Nithron #35 2 years ago

I actually couldn't play FEAR2. I borrowed it from a mate, and then realised I had to add it to my steam account to install it. Naturally, he'd already done so...

The text on the disk has an addition to the usual warning against piracy as well. "Do not lend or make illegal copies of this disk."

Thanks, Warner Bros. And thanks, Valve, for making it all possible.
  • andywilkie35 #36 2 years ago

Who on earth asked for a sequel to F.E.A.R. 2?
  • homerbert #37 2 years ago

What an odd chocie for the example of John Carpenter's films. I presume Bloom Box is from Stephen Spielberg of Jaws and Always fame?

I'm not sold on Carpenter's ability to make great movies anymore, but I wonder if he can still do atmospheric bassy synth scores.
  • creepylizard #38 2 years ago

I still don't know how the director of They Live! and The Thing could have made Ghosts of Mars but this still makes me vaguely excited..
  • TheGuvernor #39 2 years ago

FEAR 2 was massively under appreciated.
Putting it down just became the cool thing to do - when in fact it was a tightly directed, excellently paced shooter with incredible cutscenes & graphics.
Perhaps one of the most surprising, uncompromising endings in a video game ever.
I loved every minute of it.
Now Fallout 3 - that was Overrated...
