UK charts: Heavy Rain is number one

PS3 exclusive wins heart of nation.

Sony and Quantic Dream's ambitious PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain has topped the UK All-Formats chart in its first week on sale.

Aliens vs. Predator, last week's top of the pops, was pushed into second. Just Dance, Wii Fit Plus, Modern Warfare 2, Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros. Wii followed.

There was another new entry at eight in the shape of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.

BioShock 2 and FIFA 10 rounded out the top flight.

Other newcomers in the top 40 this week included Napoleon: Total War at 12 and White Knight Chronicles at 35.

There were other new entries buried in their respective platform lists. Lips: Party Classics finished 10th on Xbox 360, and Anno 1404: Venice placed 16th on PC.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes managed 39th on DS, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories took 5th on PS2 and 11th on Wii. The latter was nowhere to be found on PSP.

Echoshift, Puzzle Chronicles, SafarWii and Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces all failed to place.

Impressive, shame about the PS3 troubles that is stopping people from playing it though.

Damn I was going to say something similar so here, have a +1 instead
  • j-bo #2 2 years ago

I got lucky and it played fine - gorgeous game.
  • captainrentboy #3 2 years ago

Well deserved place for Heavy Rain, thankfully I'd installed the necessary update and pretty much finished the game by last Tuesday, and possibly because of that I played through the entire thing without a single crash or bug showing itself.
Hope Sony and Quantic Dream iron out these bugs fast, as it's the type of game that can really do with minimum interuptions.
  • Peew971 #4 2 years ago

Well deserved, it's an awesome game. Now Sony please fix my PS3 so I can finish it.
  • MasterNameless #5 2 years ago

Finished it over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it too. I didn't experience the issue with PSN that's being reported, but my audio did drop out a lot, expeically during one chase which pretty much completely ruined that one scene. The other times it was quite annoying, missing out words here and there when the characters were talking, then causing them to go quite badly out of sync.

It did break the immersion somewhat, unforgivably during the chase scene really, but I still really enjoyed it and look forward to going through it again when/if they fix it.
  • Goodfella #6 2 years ago

There seems to be some confusion here, the issue with the PSN only started today, from midnight.
  • RobotRocker #7 2 years ago

In other news. Monarch walks down street completely butt naked and no one bats an eye lid.
  • swissorc #8 2 years ago

alot of One weekers at the moment interesting to see if the new DS will impact sales of any software. Can't see Heavy rain being a long stander at the top most people who want it will probably buy it within a month don't you reckon?
  • MiniAmin #9 2 years ago

Heavy Rain No.1? That's really unexpected. I had suspected it would be like Beyond Good and Evil = a critical success which fails to sell as it should. I'm so glad to see something different at number 1.

    Well done!
  • Goodfella #10 2 years ago

Anyway, great game and well deserved, just a shame it was tarnished by that collosal dickhead Kryptonianmoon posting on EG who the killer was, twat!
  • Killerbee #11 2 years ago

Excellent result for Heavy Rain - thoroughly deserved too. It's one of the most compelling games I've played in ages. I've had one crash bug and a very minor bit of stuttering video and audio during the opening credits, but otherwise none of the problems other users have reported. Seems very odd...
  • Cheapshot #12 2 years ago

The strong TV advertising really did wonders for this game, brilliant!
  • Gambit1977 #13 2 years ago

I didn't suffer any bugs in HR, and it was definitely an experience i'll cherish. Glad it did so well, really expect massive drop offs next week.
  • Goodfella #14 2 years ago

Who the fuck is negging perfectly sensible comments?
  • Doctor_What #15 2 years ago

@ Goodfella: probably people who disagree that Heavy Rain is the emperor's new clothes. I'm on another game at the moment, but will definitely pick up Heavy Rain as soon as that's done. I loved the demo and I'm really looking forward to the full title.
  • originaljohn #16 2 years ago

I'm glad I got Silent Hill instead of heavy rain, because it is great.
  • justice-ste #17 2 years ago

    I'm upset Crash Time 3 doesn't have a place within the top 40 :(
  • WJF #18 2 years ago

Ha! Only 12th on the all-formats chart for the boxed-only editions of an expansion pack for a PC-exclusive historical strategy title?

    PC is dead! Etc. etc.

Aliens vs. Predator is doing great.

Probably a reason why Gearbox just went out to say Colonial Marines is their main focus from now on.

Lego Batman still on the list. How many copies has it sold?
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #20 2 years ago

    Good for Mr Cage.

A thoroughly enjoyable game with a fantastic atmosphere; a handful of really excellent scenes; some memorable innovations and a smattering of plot-holes.

It's nice to see such a different game do well and I hope it attracts other (better) writers/directors to try their hands at this interactive narrative type shizzle :)

    @ Doctor_What

When Goodfella made that post, someone did that thing whereby they'll -1 all the posts for no reason, trolls have been known to do this on occasion, hence Goodfella's comment.
  • des #23 2 years ago

  • Shikasama #24 2 years ago

Immensley hyped and hugely marketed game is number 1.

    Nation goes 'Wow!'
  • sd99 #25 2 years ago

Should take a while to finish Heavy Rain. Mainly because the PS3 is borked thanks to the date issue...
  • muscleblade #26 2 years ago

"Looks like FF will give them a second number 1 on the trot if they sort the hardware issues out."

What do you mean? FF is not made by the same developers and is also multiplatform. I dont get it. Who gets a second number 1?

  • gamecubeisbest #27 2 years ago

I'm surprised, there are usually shit games on top of the charts.
  • jarek98 #28 2 years ago

I was lucky enough to finish it before today's "PS3 doomsday" :-).
  • Zomoniac #29 2 years ago

Wonderful news, completely unexpected. Mindblowing game that I didn't think anyone but the hardcore minority would buy, thoroughly deserved and congrats to all involved.
  • muscleblade #30 2 years ago

    @trebell

Hmmm. Not sure about that. We know soon enough.
  • des #31 2 years ago

Bad movie is number one...what a surprise
  • Widge #32 2 years ago

    des makes amazing posts
  • MasterNameless #33 2 years ago

I wish I had des' insight.
  • KrispyBacon #34 2 years ago

I'm loving Heavy Rain.I was going to finish it this afternoon but I can't even sign in on my PS3 to play the game. Not happy at all.
  • muscleblade #35 2 years ago

"I know it's a Square game but the PS3 version is pretty much bound to go top as most multi format owners will buy that version"

The preorder data says your wrong. I hate when people just throw out comments based on their own guesses with nothing to back it up to atleast make it an educated guess.

    http://www. oxm.co.uk/article.php?id=17766

Well who cares anyway. I dont. I buy it for the 360. Hope the quality is on par or better than the PS3 version. If not i might skip it.

I was so tempted to buy heavy rain until I saw the gamecentral review. The only two sites I trust for reviews eurogamer and gamecentral give it a 9/10 and a feckin 4/10.
    Aaagghh!, I can't decide.
  • TheBear #37 2 years ago

@MilkYMoO - Eurogamer were correct. Gamecentral were wrong. Go buy!
  • MilkYMoO #38 2 years ago

I'll get it second hand, thats the safe bet. I enjoyed the demo, but gamecentral hardly ever get it wrong with their reviews.
  • Roland_D11 #39 2 years ago

I really like Heavy Rain, I wish I could finish it. I bought it on friday, installed the patch and it played fine to the end of Chapter 4 (Episode 'Sexy Girl'). It loaded, I walked two step and it crashed, black screen, no response from the system. The only solution was a reboot (my PS3 is a slim and not affected by the PSN error) only to find out that my savegame seems to be corrupted. I can't load the damn thing, all I get is a black screen over and over.

That's quite an immersion breaker for a game like this, I really hope Sony/Quantic Dream get that bug fixed. I don't understand how a major bug like that could go through QA without being spotted, especially on a closed system like the PS3.

"Searches since February 1st this year have revealed more than 250,000 unique searches for Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360, compared to 120,000 searches for the game on the PS3.

Web searches?! Well how fucking scientific.
  • GreyBeard #41 2 years ago

Searches of articles comparing the PS3 and 360 builds, which (for once) have been pretty much unanimous that the PS3 version has the graphical edge.... hmmmm.

But, hey, maybe its true that in the UK the 360 outsold the PS3 3:1 at Christmas, seeing as that was Mr "MyVouchercodes" last prediction. Seems more like a cheap stunt to get his company some added profile to me though...

  • Quickstick4 #42 2 years ago

  • des #43 2 years ago

    "des makes amazing posts "
I am glad you see that.
  • metalmike25 #44 2 years ago

Nice to see Peppa Pig still up there. It was a mediocre game but at least they might get on with creating Peppa Pig: Colonial Marines
  • RobotRocker #45 2 years ago

    @ MilkYMoO

Compromise and buy it when its second hand and half price. Both EG and GC reviews have valid points as well.
  • chrisno21 #46 2 years ago

Same happend to me almost exactly, load the previous section (probably the graveyard) and go on from there, worked for me and I finished it last night.
  • charliemouse #47 2 years ago

"my savegame seems to be corrupted"

If you get a black screen on Heavy Rain leave it 5 minutes and it'll probably be fixed without corrupting your save. Switch it off before then and you've probably fucked it up.

    *edits spazzy spelling.

    @ Muscleblade:

    Which pre-order data is that?

    Play.com? PS3 version @ no. 2 while the 360 version is at no. 4 (pre-order chart)
Amazon UK? PS3 version @ no. 5 while the 360 version is at no.6 (pre-order chart)
Amazon USA? PS3 version is currently no.1 best selling item in the videogames section while the 360 version is at 16 (Amazon USA don't do a pre-order chart)

This is just a snap-shot of course but I think you've been a little selective in your sources (official X-box site? myvouchers.com?).

Anyway nice to see Heavy Rain hit top spot. Something a little bit different which is always good (even if it doesn't appeal to everyone)
  • feistycheese #49 2 years ago

    Ahhh!!!

Happy that Heavy Rains getting some loving - not happy that my pre-order which shoukd have arrived by Friday is still not here, and the worse thing is I have to wait 15 days before i can report it 'lost' and get my money back.

Thats the last time I ever pre-order anything from Game.
  • Cadence #50 2 years ago

Milkymoo you retard, more people buying a game doesn't then validate one review over another.
  • Eraysor #51 2 years ago

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is surprisingly good.
  • darc #52 2 years ago

What the hell is "Peppa Pig"?? :)
  • MilkYMoO #53 2 years ago

I never say anything bad about anyone, but you Cadence are just an insecure fanboy wanker.
  • Silent-Hal #54 2 years ago

Very well deserved. After taking so many risks with a project truly unlike anything else out there, they damn well deserved to see this game succeed the way it has been doing, both critically and financially. Props to all those out there who have parted with their cash to support this one-of-a-kind "interactive drama".
  • RobotRocker #55 2 years ago

I have to ask those who are praising Heavy Rain for being such a "daring" and "innovative" project and congratulating it for being number one.

Where the blue fuck were you when Shenmue was released?

Edit: Don't actually because it will be depressing as all hell.

ignoring the PS3 issue for a second, this is very good news, sales like this should hopefuly encourage more developers to take some risks, and try to push more intelligent, and narrative driven software.

i haven't bought it, and i probably won't, but it's great that other people are!
  • YoshiMcTaggis #57 2 years ago

It's a real shame (though not unexpected) that Silent Hill hasn't done better. Here's hoping they make a sequel though, I only need them to give 2 the same treatment and they can stop then!
  • Silverman #58 2 years ago

Glad to see this game is doing good. It was actually much more fun than I thought, since I got some bad vibes from the demo. But during the last third of the game I just couldn“t put down the controller. Just had to see what happened next.
  • hilts #59 2 years ago

I am amazed at all the comments about completing it already ! Just jealous I am not a student anymore with TEN hours to spare everyday :(
  • jamhead #60 2 years ago

Anyone care to inform an old skinflint like me where the best deal is to be found for Heavy Rain?
  • Markitron #61 2 years ago

Had no crashes or ps3 problems in general. To anyone who is even mildly interested in heavy rain: BUY. I just finished it 5 mins ago and it had me captivated till the end. I can see why its not everyones bag but several parts of it are actually in my top ten gaming experiences, right up the with the revan reveal from Kotor
  • IneptPercy #62 2 years ago

Might actually get to play this, me and 3 friends might be going for joint ownership of a PS3, none of us can justify the costs for a couple of exclusives as we all have PCs/360s/Wiis, but cut that cost in 3 and it might be worth it.
  • muscleblade #63 2 years ago

    @suhawk75

Ok i see your point. Lets wait and see then. In one weeks time its on the shelves.
  • suhawk75 #64 2 years ago

    @ Muscleblade

It'll be interesting to see how the 360 version sells. PS3 version should sell more worldwide than the 360 version especially due to it's exclusivity in Japan but hopefully the 360 version will shift enough to encourage Square to continue releasing FF games on both systems. Means that 360 only owners don't miss out should they wish to indulge in a bit of melodrama ;)
  • RobotRocker #65 2 years ago

Sonic kart thing pathetic - 8th despite launching on five formats. Best individual unit was on Wii - outsold by Forza 3.

Hey, remember Sonic Tennis? 5 Million plus Global Sales till June 09'. Mario and Sonic at the Winter games only hit the top of the chart once and it has sold 6 million since its release. The game is set up to have legs and not blitz the chart straight away. Sega knows what they are doing. Just because a game isn't roaring into first every week doesn't mean its a failure.
  • Marshall2008 #66 2 years ago

Im going to get this but I ain't paying 40 quid for it. Will pick it up when it drops to £25 in ASDA later this month. Looking forward to God of War 3 though.
  • ChocNut #67 2 years ago

@Justice-ste I agree - if you mean top of the list of worst games ever made ;)
