R-Type Tactics gets release date News

PSP News by Ellie Gibson

12 June, 2008

Rising Star Games has announced a release date for R-Type Tactics, the new PSP instalment in the classic side-scrolling shooter series.

R-Type first appeared in Japanese arcades back in 1987. It's gone through various iterations since then, but has always been about blowing up aliens.

In R-Type Tactics you play a commander leading a small armada on a mission to defeat the Bydo, a mysterious alien race intent on destroying humanity. There are many copies. And they have a plan.

You get fighters, warships, carriers, EWACS, supply vessels and bombers to play with, and you can customise aircraft to improve their effectiveness. Enemy units can be captured and integrated into your own fleet. There are hidden maps and secret stages, plus a Gallery Mode and a 3D model data vault.

R-Type Tactics is out in Europe on September 26th. So say we all.

So R-Type Final wasn't final then? Mucking about with the continuity in this way is too much for my fragile little mind to cope with.

I actually love the sound of this!

Love the classic R-Type games/universe, and love turn based tactics games. Might make me actually switch on my PSP for the first time in nearly two years :O

"love the sound of this" sums it up for me as well, but I fear the excitement will make an embarrassed departure after after 5 minutes of playing it.

It was pure nostalgia that made me rescue R-type final (ps2) from the bargain bin at Morrisons a few months ago, but i got bored with it a lot quicker than I like to admit.

I've already completed the japanese version it's actually very good...
especially if you like tactics type turn based games...
upgradeable units and the options are all true to the r-type universe...
i liked it.

Does Europe get the little R9A model too? It's so dinky and sweet and i'd want it to go with the one i got with the jpn version*. :)

Thanks to an EG forumite! \0/

Definitely worth getting if you like this sort of thing. I even put down Disgaea for a while ;)

Well, so far the Japanese and American pre-orders have had the model so there's hope for us yet.

If a very small company like Metro3d was able to bring over the dogtags for R-Type Final (when you bought at GAME, in fact I'm wearing mine now) then its entirely possible we'll get to see some of these models as well, please ask EG, us R-Type geeks gotta know.

September eh, in the bag for sure, on a side note, I know the PSP has essentially flopped outside of Japan but if we're still able to get cultish titles like this released (along with a couple more high profile titles like Kingdom Hearts) then I'm more than happy with the machine.

For those of you interested in the model given away in Japan and the States, Rising Star Games are working on getting them in as a pre-order incentive. There's no gaurantees as they need to be tested for CE cetification before they can be used in any form of promotion or sales. The Japanese and Americans went through the same process but are not as stringent as the Europeans.

Hopefully this will be sorted out by the end of the month!
