Quake Arena coming to XBLA

Doom did well then.

id Software has announced that its next project for Xbox Live Arcade is called Quake Arena Arcade, based on the ever popular Quake 3 Arena FPS.

Coupled with the announcement of Quake Zero (see elsewhere) and back catalogue titles coming to Steam, it formed a retro-minded opening to the QuakeCon press conference.

Footage wasn't shown in the opening moments, but the fact it's coming will at least lay to rest those rumours that sprang up after Quake 3 Team Arena popped up on the ESRB website.

    Where is the original Quake?

we had quake 2 packaged with quake 4, but what about the original?

the installation was only a couple hundred megs, so when are we getting it?

QuakeWorld would be awesome. While Q3 wasn't bad, UT kicked its ass back then.

So "Quake coming to XBLA" is not a true news story title at all then?
  • brooza #4 5 years ago

    Oh :(

I thought it was the original (and best IMO) Quake

Well, this could be really good? Right?
  • spongebob #6 5 years ago

You pack that with some free Coke Zero and you got a winner. What?
  • AaronTurner #7 5 years ago

Well I think this will be wicked. Hoefully soon. I'm tired of the crappy games coming out on live.

Good news... though I'm not sure I need more well-balanced deathmatch action on 360.... expecially with Halo 3 on the way!

Xbox Live Arcade should be a brilliant platform for anything Q3A-related. Great decision, and I'm looking forward to playing it, almost as much as I am, Bomberman :D

I'm glad to see I'm not the only person disappointed to see this wasn't the original version of Quake. :(
  • thefilthandthefury #11 5 years ago

I too thought this was going to be the original Quake but, as I hated that game, I'm glad to see this is going to be based on my favourite of the series. Good news indeed!

just Q3A in its original form would make me happy. not holding my breath though. how long did lumines take from announcement to launch?

still plenty more weeks for piss poor mame ports of games we have all forgotten about.

HUZZAH!!! Q3A is the BEST FPS EVER.

HUZZAH!!! Q3A is the BEST FPS EVER.

Hardly. But it is good news though. Even more so because it opens doors for other possibilities as well. UT'99 on XBLa anyone?
  • onyx_elite #15 5 years ago

I played Q3A on the DC and personally didn't much like it. I'd much rather see original quake on xbla. Should be better than Q2 that came with Q4 but absolutely no achievement points.

    On-topic:

Disappointed at first when I realised it wasn't brownovision Q1. Man I loved that game. And it gave rise to Dank and Scud! But then I actually remembered how much I loved Q3A, even on the Dreamcast, EVEN with a controller, so this could still be good fun.

    Slightly off-topic:

I agree with Xerx3s. Original UT please, Epic - it has been far too long since I flew a redeemer in and out of the portholes and around the decks of Galleon, surprising many a ne'er-do-well camper.

    More off-topic:

Please, please, PLEASE, someone get the rights off Volition and Interplay and release either/both Freespace 1 and 2 on XBLA. I know the 360 controller can do the games justice - as soon as I played Project Sylpheed, I instantly found myself wishing I was screaming around in my Perseus. The controller layout was almost there - they just need a few tweaks and to not make the right stick make you look around (which is also anoying in Ace Combat 6).

Waaaaay off-topic and quite possibly indecently boastful:

Getting my 32" Samsung next Saturday. And a Sumo Omni to go with it. God bless dead relatives and their legacies, for furnishing me with the money to purchase expensive stuff I could never afford on my own. At least now I don't have to choose which of the excellent 2007 games to get this year.....
  • bdgr #17 5 years ago

    YES! Freespace 1 & 2 pleeeeeease!!!! (and I'll see your 32 inches and raise you 37!) :)

    @ bdgr

Glad to see I'm not the only one pining for FS1/2!

And I could actually get a larger one (I could even get a 40" BeoVision 7, but I'd always feel uncomfortable spending that much on just a telly.....), but I'm only going to be 3-4 feet away from it at most.

And my desire for surround-sound has had to be curtailed, what with a new-born baby in the adjoining house :-( I'm just going to have to plump for a Sharkoon X-tatic instead.

I'll be more excited when someone announces Descent for XBL or PSN.

How are the devs going to squeeze the entire Quake III Arena game into the 150 MB limit I wonder?
  • bioreit #21 5 years ago

    @ Darren

    'tis only "based" on Q3A.

Like Quake Zero - and that won't even be close to XBLA's 150mb limit, let alone the hundreds of meg size of Q3A!
