LittleBigPlanet Review
The little game that could.
Version tested: PlayStation 3
It was the little game with big ideas. A compact, cute PS3 platform game from a tiny indie studio that wanted the world to muck in with its making, using level and object creation tools. But with time (and not very much of it at that), LittleBigPlanet became a very big game indeed.
It took off, like one of its own rocket-propelled skateboards. It became the poster-child for a new generation of gaming; commentators and Sony executives showered it in buzzwords, talking up connected communities creating constellations of content, portraying LittleBigPlanet as Spore in skate pants.
Sony got giddy with all the reflected glory and love. First it promoted the game's Sackboy avatar to platform mascot and ubiquitous totem of cool, and then elevated LittleBigPlanet itself to the status of a triple-A, blockbuster tent-pole of its entire platform strategy. It as good as said that this was the game that would save PS3, and even those who'd loved it at first sight had to wonder whether Media Molecule's funky experiment could take the strain.
Amidst all this big talk though, one of the game's big ideas got lost in the chatter: an idea that will probably mean more to more people than any of the Game 3.0 posturing and theorising, or the daringly ambitious online features, or the astonishing freedom of the creative tools. LittleBigPlanet sets out to resurrect the simple fun of a game you control with left, right and jump. It sets out to make the side-scrolling platform game relevant and exciting again. And it succeeds.
With its homespun beauty, irrepressible charm, wild momentum and tactile physics, LittleBigPlanet strongly recalls Nintendo's 1995 classic Yoshi's Island - and while it's nothing like as perfect a platformer, it's enough of a compliment to say that it can stand up to the comparison at all. The game's Story mode is a suite of some 20-odd levels made by Media Molecule that circumnavigate LittleBigPlanet's imaginary world.

Sackboy's roped link to the objects conjured by Popit is a subtle but crucial inclusion.
The Tudor gardens of Britain; the African savannah; a haunted Tim Burton wedding in some spooky alternative South America; and on through Mexican badlands, American cities, mystical interludes in Japan and India, and a devious parody of a Siberian villain's lair. The conceit is that every themed stop on the way is curated by a creator, a king or magician who sets the scene and the challenges, the way players are later invited to themselves.
It's all portrayed in the game's unforgettable visuals, a dreamlike diorama of cardboard and sponge that blends the home-made aesthetic of Michel Gondry music videos with the heady surrealism and humour of stop-motion children's TV from decades ago, shows like The Clangers or The Magic Roundabout. The sticky-back-plastic stylisation clashes headlong with extreme realism; the rendering of light sources and textured surfaces is scientifically exact, as total a realisation of high-definition as you'll see anywhere in games this year. Characters, hazards and contraptions are conjured out of household objects, trinkets, plain chunks of material, stickers, gears and pullies and motors and joints.

Media Molecule's own levels aren't just a good starting point; they're a great game of their own.
It's a marvel: a high-res, low-fi animated sketchbook that never fails to delight and astonish, even if the art in some stages has less charm than in others (the Japanese and Indian stages being the swoonsome highlight). Drinking in every detail is a compelling enough reason for several playthroughs of this fairly short Story mode. The vast number of hidden collectables is another: all of them are valuable and useful, being stickers, materials, machines, objects, tools or decorations to use in the game's Create mode, or costume pieces for dressing up the Sackboys (an addictive diversion in itself), or mini-game levels.
You'll also want to return to play as much of the game as you can in multiplayer. The levels and goals are identical - with the exception of a few optional puzzles for multiple players only - but with more than one Sackboy running around, LittleBigPlanet becomes a loosely-structured scrum of competition, collaboration and sheer, joyful mucking around. There are mini-races, and the scramble to collect bubbles of stuff for your score - those bubbles add a score multiplier if you chain them, and pop with a deliciously moreish sound. The camera scales competently for four players on a single machine, and it's played this way that LittleBigPlanet is at its absolute best: an irresistible, riotous, social and totally accessible entertainment.
The game's physics have a huge part to play in this. In keeping with the theme of conjuring fantasy from the realistic and mundane, the physics are consistent but also exaggerated and slightly slowed, and the PS3's processing power taxed to the point of slowdown in a couple of places by the sheer amount of bouncing, collapsing, pinwheeling chaos, as well as the blistering speeds achieved in some vehicle sections. It's slapstick of the highest order, and again, adding extra players just adds to the feedback-loop of fun.
With physics as the basic building block, Media Molecule has designed levels around momentum and mechanical ingenuity more than taxing puzzles or acrobatic challenges. The quality isn't totally consistent - the game drags a little in the finicky and generic Mexican section, about halfway through. The mini-game levels seem rather arbitrary and pointless solo, although if you use the Quick Play option to chain them in multiplayer, they can sustain an uproarious hour or two. But the second half of Story mode is mostly fantastic, and at their most ingenious and surprising, the systems of cogs and tunnels and traps that the Sackboys tumble through are worthy of Nintendo's best designs.
The controls and the lives system, however, are not. Sackboys are fun to manipulate, especially the puppeteering you can do with their facial expressions and gestures, but also just their easy, bouncing joie-de-vivre. But there's the slightest lack of precision and definition to the floaty jump, a hint of stickiness, the timing's off by a fraction of a fraction of a second. When the game presents you with exacting challenges of dexterity and timing, as it occasionally does, that's a minor annoyance. When it's combined with the vague, slow and over-zealously auto-corrected movement between the game's three planes of depth, it's a problem.

Issues with control and checkpointing spoil the party a little, but only that much.
Then there's the checkpoint lives system, which gives you an infinite number of lives for a level, but only three (or on too-rare occasions, six) for any given checkpoint. Although checkpoints are generously and well placed, three lives just aren't enough for some of the harder sections, and if you lose them all, it's back to the start of the level. Abandoning lives completely would have stripped all the tension out of the game, but this inflexible system creates half a dozen chokepoints of almost unbearable, teeth-grinding irritation that simply didn't need to be there.
LittleBigPlanet is a great platform game. It's not a perfect one. It doesn't need to be, though, because its creative tools turn it into something else entirely, a unique, hilarious, endless entertainment. Even - and this is an absolutely crucial point - if you never use them.

The percentage of entries in our level design competition that included rocket-propelled skateboards was roughly four zillion.
Go to Cool Levels, and LittleBigPlanet presents you with an alternative world of stages created by other players, scattered around randomly to encourage you to browse and take punts on things. A genius tagging system - where you're asked to pick one of a random selection of words to describe a level after you've played it - combined with "heart" scores (hearting is LittleBigPlanet's equivalent of digg.com's digging, and also works as a bookmark for favourite items in Create mode) makes it easy to get a feel for what's worth trying. Levels download very quickly, too, and can be saved to the hard drive for posterity, or to edit yourself later. The review copy of the game could have done with more powerful and flexible search features, but we understand this will be addressed in the final version.
And the levels themselves, based on those generated by the game's beta test alone, are simply extraordinary. You haven't seen anything like this in videogames before. Finely-tuned pieces of platform-game design are understandably rare, and attempts to recreate others, like Super Mario Bros' first level, don't even remotely work. But these are replaced by a wild creativity and anarchic humour that no organised development studio could ever hope to create, and a sort of gleeful ignorance of the need to have a point or be a challenge or submit to any kind of traditional concept of what a videogame level should be.
There are plenty of one-shot jokes and inventions: the car that plays Sweet Child O' Mine; the fanboy jab at the Xbox 360's red ring of death; the comedically cack-handed Rick Roll. The best levels are just playgrounds filled with bizarre toys, or sort of interactive theatre performances that interject a little light platforming into variously stupid or strange stories. The two-part Heist - the story of a bank job gone wrong - has already established itself as an artful classic; you can also shoot Sackboy to a cardboard moon on an Apollo mission or, in the memorably eerie Asgard, pick your way through a forest of giant, electrified glass Sackboys, your image warping as though you're in a hall of mirrors.
The quality and diversity are already surprising. In reality, deep and rewarding gameplay will only feature in a tiny percentage of levels - it will take more professionally-designed levels to truly extend the lifespan of LittleBigPlanet as a platform game - but it doesn't matter. As an endlessly renewable sideshow, a daily source of surprises and silliness, a genuinely new form of interactive entertainment, it's a triumph - and one for which Media Molecule can actually only take some of the credit.
That credit goes to the handful of players dedicated enough to go through the painstaking hour upon hour upon hour of work necessary to put these levels together. And herein lies LittleBigPlanet's greatest disappointment - or at least, its double-edged sword. Create mode is an incredible achievement, allowing tremendous scope for freedom (especially in its mechanical tools) within the simple, logical and fast Popit interface, and accompanied by an exhaustive suite of tutorials narrated by an avuncular Stephen Fry. And yet, it's still really quite hard to make things.

Even the ugliest creatures and gizmos are hopelessly cute.
That's partly down to some minor niggles with the interface (the laborious undo command, the counter-intuitive "pause" rules, the inefficient lack of shortcut commands). It's mostly down to the overwhelming depth of customisation and parameter-tweaking that's possible, but that can't be a bad thing. Can it?
Perhaps it can. It depends who Media Molecule wants to involve in LittleBigPlanet, and what it wants them to create. Cool Levels is already populated with the work of a talented hardcore who will serve the rest of the game's community with entertainment for years. But the creation, as it stands, isn't going to involve the majority of players of the game. It won't let them do the things they want to do - put their own images or music straight in a level (unless it's by taking pictures with an EyeToy). It will let them do hundreds of things they don't want to do or would never think of. And the three planes of action add a fiddly layer of organisational complexity in themselves: it might have been more accessible to limit creation to a single, flat plane to lower the barrier to entry.
The promise that anyone could create something simple and fun and personal with LittleBigPlanet hasn't come true. In a way, it's the opposite of Spore, which makes it easy and fun for every single player to have creative input, but doesn't let any of them change the fabric of the game. LittleBigPlanet lets them run wild, with unprecedented results, but it locks the majority out of the creative process, because it's time-consuming and simply not very enjoyable.

LBP is also the latest in a long line of games where we've enjoyed slapping each other off buildings. More of this, please.
We hoped it could do both those things. That it doesn't isn't the let-down it might have been, thanks to the untamed community of brilliant nutjobs that's already out there, appending their DIY masterpieces to this beautiful, mildly flawed, magnificently multiplayer platform game. We salute them, we salute Media Molecule for making it possible for them, and we salute Sony for its total commitment to this brave, hare-brained project.
But mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.

For all the PS3 fans that will post after this message I say this to you. Better luck in 2009, Xbox 360 beat you down and made you cry in 2008. FFXIII goes to 360, Tekken 6 goes to 360. MGS4 and LBP flop on the only review site that matters. Gears of war 2 will show you how to reach the high scores you dream of every night while you stroke your Blu-ray thingy,
I'm off to bed, this score is going to keep my smiling all day tomorrow, why?, because Halo 3 scored better. Every one of your tears makes me smile PS3 owners, so cry , cry like you've never cried over a review score before. Remember all the nights you looked at LBP , getting your hopes up for a good game. Well now those hopes and dreams are gone so tell us how it feels.Think of how butt hurt you are right now, let it all out PS3 owners,
so much floppage, this will not end well.

The game is horrible, a flop, deal with it. If you want shallow unrewarding gameplay buy LBP, it's as simple as that.

However, ironically, I was expecting an 8/10 or even a 7/10 from the text of the review itself. You seemed to sum up the various parts as "not actually that great" (platforming, mp, creating).
Is it a case of a game that's better than the sum of its parts? Or is it because it's so unique that it deserves a high score for that alone?

Everything I have heard so far only makes me want it more.
What a pity that the comments section has been overrun by the type of tiny cocked tosspots that live up to every gaming stereotype.
LBP is a game that all the industry will be celebrating, including the people at Microsoft and Nintendo, if they really care about games.
Remember when gaming was about the games and not the console brand you supported?

I must be a genius though, for being able to use it at all, apparently ... and this is obviously the part where I (and I'm sure many others) am going to disagree with even the very respectible game that LBP is ... for if LBP can't get a 10, then no game deserves a 10. In my humble opinion, anyway.

The biggest crux of this game is the 3 layers of depth, it doesn't bother you a huge ammount in the main game, but in the creation mode, I found it a huge pain. Keeping it simple, I think, would've been the way to go.

Not to discredit the decent posts here, but sorry, I can't be arsed sifting through hundreds (and soon thousands...) of moronic cock fighting to read them.
Anyway...from playing the Beta, I would have been very surprised by a 10/10. It's a great game, not quite like anything before it, but it's not nearly perfect.
And as for the difficulty of making levels...let me put it this way. If great levels were easy to make, wouldn't that take the skill out of making them? MM have obviously had to balance accessibility with a large feature set...reduce that feature set and you're making it easier, but at the same time you're robbing the game of some of its potential (see Forge for an example). So yes, it is difficult to make levels. It's time consuming and often tedious. Yet it's also hugely rewarding to see people play and enjoy your levels.
There's really nothing quite like it.

My God!
Game platforms are just places to play games. There is no need for loyalty like it is a soccer team because you are not fortunate enough to own multiple systems.
I can't wait for Little Big Planet... 9/10 is a great score, if you can't see that then you are an idiot.
With such a focus on user generated content giving it a 10 when level creation is something that the majority of people don't get involved is hard to maintain.
Both the PS3 and 360 are good game systems. If you only have one then enjoy your games, don't go around bagging out other games you haven't played or crying simply because what has become your systems potential killer app didn't get perfect scores.
How old are you people acting like this? Five?

What the reviewer got wrong is that he jumps to the conclusion only the hardcore will build levels which is bollocks. I spent hours and hours making 2 levels in the beta and creating is half the fun. Just cus you weren't adept with the tools you shouldn't label that as a disappointment, thats for people to find out themselves and i certainly aint a hardcore nutjob.
Still LittleBigPlanet (and bluray) is the reason i sold my xbox and what a brilliant decision and for the fanboys...Home will take a giant shit on your shitty wii experience next month unless MS pay Sony off with their billions cus thats all they do pay for stuff which Sony usually end up with for free.

Anyway, Little Bit Planet sounds better than I thought. I'm a big fan of platformers and love the art style of the game, but I never had much interest in creating levels anyway, so the fact that the level editor is so in-depth and complex bothers me none. I'm glad to see that the single-player offline stuff is great, and from what I've seen of clips from the beta, there's a lot of interesting things users have been doing with the game beyond just generic platform stuff. Anyways, I'm pretty excited about this game now.

I love playing game, I truly do, but I'm embarrased to be associated in any way with some of you. Why do gamers, in general, feel the urge to be so hostile to others and start petty arguments. 9 out of 10 is a fantastic score and the review itself, you know the writing and stuff, was also extremely positive and pointed out problems that are apparent. Eurogamer aren't biased towards Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony. They review games and that's the end of it. Jesus, Gears of War got an 8. If you like the look of this game then buy it and hopefully enjoy it. If you enjoy it then that's all that matters, not whether it's better than MGS4, Halo3 or any other game.
^^^ Well said that man
Some really sad, bigotted fan boys posting in this thread. Grow up and realise that 9/10 means a game is superb. If you haven't got a PS3, don't bitch about it by slagging its games off when there are no grounds to do so.

That kind of deserved praise lives longer than a 9 out of 10.
But yeah, that doesn't mean it isn't finicky and a little difficult to make great levels. But EG gave credit where credit is due. The thousands that have participated in the beta making beautiful stages would never have had the same chance otherwise. And giving this toy to a child with no sense of what it means to "waste time" the imagination engine that this game breathes is what makes it special.

And that's what makes it not receive the same score as other high-profile games?
Just to be clear, I understand the review completely. And I share the same gripe, my point is, what LBP does right is so enormous, that it shouldn't be placed into the 9 category. No game is a 10, but you honor the team for they did right, LBP should be right up there with Mario Galaxy, Halo 3 (which I thought wasn't that great) etc etc...There's just no excuse, especially when most of the gripes could be fixed with downloadable content.

You can't tell me there isn't gonna be copies of this game in 2 or 3 years after release? It's a big deal in the gaming industry. It's something new to get into, I think a game like this deserves to be put in the spotlight.
Is that not reasonable?
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Uh... why do other sites who've reviewed LittleBigPlanet say there are 50, not 20 single player story mode levels? Meristation comes to mind.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Comment below viewing threshold Show
but, then you had this guy/girl who made a God of War level and it was fantastic!!! I don't know how the hell he did it? My little Pixel Junk Monsters race pale in comparison to his.
So, when you say the levels that are gonna make LBP the classic title that it has the potential to be aren't here yet--I know exactly what you mean. I think they should have alluded to this more in the review, and Now I take back my outburst earlier.
With that thought process in mind, I'd say a 9 is pretty fair. I just don't agree with giving GTA4 a 10 (There was so much wrong with that game man it's not even funny. GTA4's popularity and it being the "cool' game, give it's critical praise, because the actual game is not even anything special--I didn't even finish the SP! Story was freakin cookie-cutter gansta crap..let me not get started on that one)
Nice comment man...tks for clearing that up for me

Interesting review. Got to say, it seems somewhat harsh, and the suspicion of controversy courting for hits looms large.
Of course it's complicated to invoke all of the features that LBP is capable of - you can't expect to put a physics based platformer together with a couple of clicks. The crucial point that Oli didn't say was whether you can put together a simple level easily, which all the demos say you can. Youtube's popularity is based entirely on being able to do both simple crap for your mates and full blown video production, and LBP should be the same.
(And not being able to use your own pics etc. is not a big deal, and obvious and smart, to (a) minimise the inevitable p0rn abuse, and (b) minimise the copyright dangers.)
You can't judge Youtube on the quality of video transmission, or the ease of video editing software - it misses the point. It's the *potential* being placed in user's hands that makes it work. LBP is the same. In fact, the rules of MMOs reviews should apply, because LBP will live or die based on the content the community comes up with (and I have every faith it will be spectacular). A re-review in a month or so would be in order.
I'd give it 10/10 for pure b*lls, charm and originality - which the much discussed Halo3 had none of.

The game is brilliant. Some have said Oli was overly harsh about the create tool. I disagreed with him at first but then I remembered my first bit of messing around and getting to grips with the mechanics of it. It's the only part of the game I feel isn't entirely accessible.
But once up and running I had a basic level up and running in about an hour. And it was fun! But then thats me, not everyone will like this aspect of the game. When your presented with that big bare blue space and three million tools for the first time its a bit daunting. Once you play some levels, see how things are done and what is possible and most importantly that you can do whatever you want, then you really get into it.
Felt the comment about the number of tools that would never be used was silly though, they are just tools and having lots means you've given the user the power to do what ever comes into their mind.
Also it is (mostly) accessible to everyone, my girlfriend insisted on getting to sit and mess with it yesterday before the beta runs out and she loved it. Serious pouting going on when I said she'd have to wait until the 24th to play it!

As it stands, I'm wondering if Banjo Kazooie 3 will not be more adequate to fulfill my platforming and creating needs, seeing as it seems to sport huge levels to play around with, a structured story, and creation tools that will not overwhelm you with infinite depth.

Comment below viewing threshold Show
From what I played of the beta I thought the review was fair, but I think that it is only right to respond to the criticisms from my play of the beta, if only because it stands out from pretty much every game mentioned in the thread (Halo 3, Gears, Bioshock, MGS4 etc) in terms of scope, art, play style etc. I found that truly refreshing (I'm trying to say 'I'm glad it is a game where you don't need to go killing without upsetting the Xbots)
1. I did get used to the z-axis thing very very quickly (after about 30 minutes) and it didn't bother me after that. The first time I played I really struggled with it, but when I came back to the game it was suddenly a non-issue and I didn't think about it.
2. I'd also add that this is a game that has had three pages of comparison to some of the greatest games ever made - comparing level design to Nintendo's classics is something that few modern Nintendo games would live with. If that wasn't enough, it set itself the task of a level creator that will satisfy a hardcore that will create an actual working calculator (that level is amazing) and will allow any idiot to make a clean, working level in 25 minutes. The fact that it doesn't quite succeed on either of these things means it is understandable to give a 9/10, but sets the bar for 10/10 really really high.
At the end of the day, before you read this review you'll have a pretty good idea what you think of the game because of everything surrounding it - if you're thinking about spending £300 on a PS3 then you'll probably have done a bit more research than waiting for an EG review and deciding that after the game gets 9/10 instead you'll can go away, play Gears 2 and eat some sweets. This is a game that everyone who plays it will enjoy immensely. That's surely enough.

I must say, I see a lot of posters that have trolled certain games in the past that are now moaning about trolling. The GoW and H3 threads spring to mind.
Seriously though, EG, implement a system like the one above on the forum and here and it will make this a better place. Obviously that would result in normal discussions thus not so much page hits which is why it won't happen.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
But mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Does reviews of other entertainment media score on a percentage basis? e.g. Star Wars versus The Dark Knight, which is the 92% and which the 93%. Percentage based scores are pathetic and probably evolved from the target audience being school children who are marked in their exams that way.
Even the scale of 1 to 10 is pretty rubbish, as most results are statistically clustered between 7 and 9; although Eurogamer and EDGE magazine use a wider spread than most.
What's wrong with a review scale of: must buy, buy if you like this kind of thing, rent only, avoid?

You are an ass mate, halo 3 was poor, gears is overated Little big planet scored a 9 you prick, thats a good score, 10/10 would mean perfection.
Every review is subjective and down to personal opinion, and for the record I have all three next gen machines so I am not biased to either but you do sound like a complete twat to be fair.

Exactly how old are some of the people on here????? This is a good review and it states that the game is great yet people are using it as an excuse to hurl mud around implying that its shit ( the game not the mud!).... Come on people....
I must say that the review comments on sticky control is a bit of a worry though.
P.S. Since when was it the case that a game had to receive a 10 to be a credible game? I recall a time that that accolade was reserved only for absolute perfection and mould breaking innovation. 9 was always considered great. If everything gets a 10 then how are we to make informed decisions on what we flash our cash for ???

Luckily it seems that those that do have the skill/time will be keeping the game alive for a long time. Really looking to get this myself, the best thing I liked about the beta was the charming level design (& Sackboy of course) but also the amount of fun to be had in local multiplayer.

I honestly think EG as a site has lost its high stature, not because of this getting a 9, or MGS getting an 8. Moreso GTA4 getting a 10 (completely undeserved IMO more like a 7, still good though), Halo 3 never played - won't comment. Even moreso, the stupid faceoff series that just sucks up the lowest common denominator in both fanbases and spits 'em out into the spotlight (why now? they were never in the PS2/Xbox gen). As well as the debacle that was the Shuhei Yoshida interview. I hope for EG's sake money is not changing hands for review scores, you'll be left with the stink thats in this comments thread.

Meanwhile Dead Space has got 7/10 but does seem my type of game so I will bother.
Come on people ratings are completely subjective to what you think of a genre to begin with, to me 6-7/10 in a genre I like is usually good. 10/10 in a genre I don't like is still rubbish.

I went into it and made up a basic little level to just try out the different mechanics and switches. Almost every tool has its own great tutorial (all narrated by Fry) and I spent the first couple of hours going through each of them getting more excited about all the stuff they give you to use.
Then I got into actually making a level, this is pretty daunting. Your given a HUGE blank canvas and as you start to place things you start to understand the mechanics. Once your used to that its a joy. There are some templates with a level pretty much drawn out, just needs items and traps and stuff added in to play with the tools.
I created a second quick level that had a large rotating disk with its own levels inside it. Was based on doodle I did in a meeting. Took all of an hour or so to build and test to plug the gaps in it. When you do finish a level that works you feel very chuffed!
The rest of the beta time I spent playing other levels (we didn't know then levels were being kept so didn't want to invest too much time in something I would lose) to see what everyone else was doing. Some amazing stuff there already and some stuff where you can see what they were trying to do but hadn't tested or planned properly. Gives you plenty of ideas to test yourself.
*edit: so to answer, its easy to use in terms of the tools, the mechanics and the niggles here and there to get past could be frustrating. Take some time though to mess with these and then you'll find you can do just about anything REAL easy. Worth looking at the little tutorial videos in EurogamerTV as well.

At the end of the day, scores don't matter anyway. All that matters is if *you* like a game. No-one else matters, and neither to silly numbers that try to encapsulate an evaluation far too complicated to ever be captured in 1 dimension.

As a confirmed LBP luddite, I picked through the review as carefully as I could and nope, I still have no clue.
I understand the design stuff but not the aim of the whole thing and why, after fannying with the design stuff for an hour or two and trying to cope with the inevitable boredom, this is such a big deal.
I totally give it props for being from leftfield and relatively unique etc but I'm not exactly creaming my pants for it ...

As someone who could just about be counted as a Sony fanboy (hey, I don't know why, its just one of those things y'know, though I'm not stupid enough to deny myself the great games on other systems) I was getting worried after Lair and Haze set the trend for some kind of 'Curse of The Great PS3 Hype Machine' inevitable failure.
Whenever Sony tries to go toe-to-toe in the 'bigtime' with other developers they always come up a bit short. The Getaway was a pants GTA clone, Killzone was no Halo, and GT vs Forza... well GT5 would actually need to come out first....
But when they cut their own path they do much better, so perhaps LBP was the perfect solution. Find something quirky and original, something you just cant find anywhere else, then expand and build on it like flippin' crazy.
Personally this reminds me of when I dabbled in making leves for ABUSE all those years ago on the PC, but back then the online community wasn't really there, and ABUSE was a bit of an obscure game anyway, so I can't wait to give it another bash with a more versatile toolset and more cohesive online structure.

What an impressive thread. Nothing like a good exclusive title launch to stir the cockles of the fanboys. LBP has shaped up to be as good as I would have hoped. Pity some people are trying to compare a platformer with an FPS game (Halo 3), it seems even more odd considering these titles are not even available on the opposing systems.
Seriously guys, you need to get over yourselves and this fanboy mentality. You can love your console, and still appreciate other competitve titles. I wasn't a big fan of the PS2, but I still loved Ico and Amplitude. You do not need to feel threatened by them.

I can't remember when I used an ignore-function so often in such short time. Just fortifies my opinion that fanboys (doesn't matter which side of the so called 'console war') are a bunch of morons who should get a life!
Seriously, when 'your' console really gets the better games all the way, there's no need to prove it. In my opinion the best games can be found on all consoles anyway (CoD4, upcoming Mirror's Edge, Bioshock also comes to PS3 etc.). And if I shoot at some generic enemy in halo, crysis, killzone or whatever doesn't really change that much. Yeah, platform exclusive, so what? All platforms have their share of good games. And if you're jealous about one or two of them and your daddy doesn't buy you a second console, this is no reason to act like a moron on some website like EG.

Either one is bad but the first, at least, would have faded. However, what has stuck is the "Halo 3 ten" as a muppet stick to beat other games with, even when they manage an excellent nine.
The LBP review reads like a nine - very good game, new ideas, excellent art, but some things aren't right. A nine. Because of it's nature and innovation (and unlike that certain sequel of a sequel), it has the possibility though to linger on in minds in a way that a classic games do. That will remain to be seen, probably later than the year end retrospective.

To explain more - to me it feels like 10/10 on EG nowadays means the game is accessible to wide masses, more like mainstream movie (Transformers anyone?). So I usually tend to agree with their rating, but it's not my personal rating. Most of my "personal" top (which in silly rating style would mean 10/10) games received ~7-8-9 from EG
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Before, the 10 seemed almost unattainable, and people like me thought that to be this site's standard. I think everyone beating EG with the Halo 10 is absolutely right, whether they're gibbering fanboys or literate users. That rating was poison for this site's image, whether it brought them pagehits/moneyhats or not.
Do away with the number ratings. It's the only way to save your integrity. Let the review speak for itself.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Why? Because IGN is a Sony biased site and EG isn't?
On average, IGN rates PS3 exclusive games 3-4 points about the metacritic average. It doesn't do the same for 360 exclusive titles.
EG, on the other hand, is generally less generous with scores (against the metacritic average) equally on both the PS3 and 360. No bias here.

I think a good idea that someone already mentioned is having a vote style system for each comment like Digg and I think Joystiq have for example.

"Why not just buy one right now?, considering what Sony went through to bring the PS3 to the price it's at now we should be lucky it's at the price it is right now "
Eh? I couldn't care less what Sony have 'been through'. I have a price in mind that is the price where I consider the PS3 value for money enough to warrant a purchase. Beyond that it's all irrelevant. It's not my fault Sony chose to put a BD drive in it, which adds nothing to the value proposition for me personally. I don't care if Sony senior management have to pedal on exercise bikes to provide electricity to the manaufacturing plant for 16 hours a day. What a bizarre statement. I don't owe them anything.
Comment below viewing threshold Show
Trouble is that any post that the fanboys didn't like would get more negative votes than their own posts because they care more... And then there's them standing up for each other with positive votes. Democracy only works if the lunatics don't show up or at least don't care enough to act...

Point 1- Scores are just an opinion AND even so 9 is still a bleeding good score (based on 10 out of 10)
Point 2- 'Hijacking' the article comments to spout tired claptraps about 'My console better than yours' is not going to make other person changing side but just point scoring game! Or that 'OMG not better than Halo3'!!
Point 3- Score given are at the time, whether in the grips of hype machine or that its really stand out among other titles at the time but THE real test is how it stand out over a period of time.
I will still get LBP and 9 just indicate for me that the game is really good with fair points on how its strengths/weakness works out.

3. The PS3 is a shit failure with barely any good exclusive games and a bunch of dumbed down 360 ports

5. This game willl sell like shit because Sony fanboys are all just retarded versions of 360 fanboys. The top selling games on the system are a shit FPS and a shit racing game as opposed to the quality racers/shooters on the 360.
6.Killzone 2 is a piece of shit sequel to a piece of shit game from piece of shit developers and it'll sell ten times as much.

I was in the store the other day & I saw they had named a bread after you. Then I looked again and realised it actually said "Thick Cut".
ROFL indeed. Thanks man.

Are you really SERIOUS???
Damn..my 'complete dick in a thread-ometor' is going off the scale here...
The shame...
(kudos for the editing though, one can but assume due to spelling/language/not having a fu*king clue)
the irony is, i will probably have you in my friends list this time next year as you slate the 'outdated' 360...
cheers for making me grin x

Every multiplatform game is better on the 360 and gears 2 has better graphics than every PS3 game coming out this year. Why am I going to buy a shit failure like the PS3, to play Killzone 2?
Newsflash you dumb bitch the PS3 is a failure. Every big name third party PS3 game is going to the the 360 (FF13, Tekken, Devil May Cry etc). You think that things are going to get better next year?
Why the fuck would I ever want to buy the shittest, most expensive console this gen with the worst downloadable games, worst controller and worst third party support?

My prediction came true.
So how close is this 9 to MGS4's 8? I wonder.

LOL..outdated by the means of last gen media formats (i.e DVD) but then again i suppose you like 'swapping disks' as it encourages you to get off your fat arse...oh yeah, good job these 3rd parties you mention are also going the way of the ps3 eh (dead rising 2, bioshock1 and 2, orange box maybe left4dead, saints row 2 etc) do YOU think things are getting better next year also??
i agree though, why would i buy the shittest (unreliable) cheaply made console this gen with 512mb downloadable games, a controller that NEEDS batteries with a shite d-pad, and the worst FIRST party support..but hey, to each their own..LMFAO BITCH!

So you really really like shiny wet, bumpy turd-like surfaces, don't you? I played through Gears1 on PC with way better graphics than xbox, still wasn't a very good game though.

Totalitarianism (i.e. GAF) would be better, I think.

Better yet to operate an entirely separate forum on an invite-only basis. At the first sign of fucktardism a user gets bumped, simple. Meritocracy and totalitarianism combined, perfect.

I'd just have a Members/Guest system if you wanted to go in that direction. As mentioned above, dodgy members could be bumped out but then I can see killing-spree headlines in the Express becoming that little more frequent. Ultimately I think it should remain as is, some of the arguments are quite amusing. It's like being at a family wedding after some of your younger cousins have stolen some booze.
Flaming:
Massive arguments over consoles, those which include swearing, just showcase individuals losing the ability to objectively argue a point. Both consoles are superb and lead the field in terms of gaming.
LBP Score:
Reasonably surprised if truth be told. It appears to have the whole package though (PR, Graphics, Quality little game, nice people behind it which prompts you, I and journos to back the game) yet I'm not interested in making my own environments/games and this appears to be a big part of things. I dont really like platformers either so that cuts me out :/ If I had a PS3 it'd be on my shopping list though, am I caught in hype? I personally hope it does very well, Mm deserve that.
Halo:
Never played any of the earlier offerings but picked up Numero 'Free and played through with my brother. We both thought it to be quite a dissapointment, became a slog to just get through the thing. Quite a few things were a big let down and we only kept going to reach the end/see what it had to offer, oh, and muck around with the fantastic replay editor. Couldnt stand the combat, everything felt mediocre. However, we have fairly similar tastes when it comes to games so I just need mention my own opinion
To get 10/10... hmmm, somewhat rose tinted review IMO but the reviewer clearly loved it. Personally I would have rated at 7/10 for me and 8/10 for 12 year olds. Ouch.
PS3 versus X360:
God, these format rivalries never go away do they?
I dont really think the PS has moved on all that much with this generation. Its undeniably more complicated to develop for and any dev will tell you that is not a situation you wish to encounter when making a game. Deveoper tools/support never were Sony's thing for anyone but their flagship titles anyhow. Yes I pay for Live, but its 40quid which is nothing to most adults (the price of a game) and I have to say the service is almost always exceptional. Everything works brilliantly from voice chat to invites to response times to messaging to, well, everything I need for online gaming. The PS3 comes out with the silly motion controller (we knew they were rubbish years ago) and some dodgy titles in its early days. Microsoft just did their part in supporting the release of games for gamers IMO. Sony tried a few new things (Blu-ray), Motion Controller, Free Online Play... the former (BD) doesnt matter for most gamers... you dont need a slower drive to load your games and we dont need the media space for quite some time, nor do we want (for the most part) to install our games on the HD. Unfortunately this feature will creep over to the 360... depends on how it'll be used as to whether that will ultimately be good for the system or not.
I do like my racing games, and for, undeniably, the biggest racer on Sony's books (GT) not to be out for launch/near launch or miles down the line, is unacceptable. Completely unacceptable. Especially given Sony's love and support for Polyphony. Maybe they are worried the team would bugger off and develop on the 360, I'm not sure of the details. The whole GT for PSP failure promotes the failure that much further. They've lost out here.
For MS and the developer to get Forza2 out when they did, for it to play and drive so well... it checks the 'racer' on my list. It could look better for sure, but the excellent framerate, online play and driving elements work perfectly for a console. Gears... good fun playing through the game in co-op, COD4... great (on both systems)... GTA I notice some differences between systems (dare I say a little slower on PS3, to the eye certainly) but ultimately I think that game has become boring. Its fun mucking around with a mate in free-roam though and that alone justifies the purchase.
The PS3 is probably, technically at least, that little more capable than the slightly older 360. But you have to remember how much effort, time and money goes into making a game. The PS3 starts out with a massive disadvantage in terms of ease of development. Those reading these forums arently likely to care about a 10yr lifespan, no doubt the PS3's offerings will improve over time (Killzone is not such an offering by any stretch) but we'll be looking to the next 'thing' long before its strength really comes to the fore.
Oh yeah, this is a LBP thread, not my personal blog
Well done Mm!!

Well that was novel and half!
Though I have to say your points are pretty valid. The PS3 may well have a slight edge (which remains to be seen) and it may well have been developed for a 10 year forward thinking lifespan - you point out "are we really going to be bothered about that in ten years"?? I think the answer would be most likely not.
As far as your Halo comments go I think that the offline game had its moments of brilliance but the penultimate level was just shocking. Did you play online multi player though?? Thats really where the meat of Halo is. Though the bottom line is I dont think it was worth the score it got even though I love it and still play it.
Having said that, as you point out this a LBP thread and Im really looking forward to it ... I dont give a shit about what score it got if I like it. And after all 9 pretty much says its great. (Though as Ive already said I am a little concerned about the comments on the sticky platforming controls)
Roll on Next Fri! - Fable 2 and LBP .... which to play 1st??.... decisions decisions......

So anyway, EDGE gave LBP a 10/10 and said the story mode included over 50 levels (not 20+ like Eurogamer says). Hmm... Looks like EG didn't bother unlocking all the keys for the other levels...

I enjoy all 4 of my gaming platforms (as much as you can, a lump of plastic) but love the games they allow me to play more and this one is so bloody good I feel sorry for all those angry and all-too-obviously transparent children above.

"OMFG EG! M$ keeps paying u to give low marks to PS3 games. FFS. no way is this a 9 you morans."
Dude really. Who makes u think that this game should of scored any higher? It might look cute, it might be fun and different for a bit but wtf is so special about it to score a 10? a fucking 10 should make me play with that game the whole fucking time. Im sorry but this shit cant keep me to play long and put it back on over and over. The 9 if you think about it was more than enough. I wont say the game sux but ffs if this is what a nextgen console is gonna count on selling from then like Jack Black would say, "fuck her gently" cause for reals its sad when this game could of been way more fit to a Wii.
Thats all i gottta say. Now all keep bitching and keep up the stupid comments and console wars. I dont even bother reading anymore. And Psycho's comment just happened to read it since it was in the first ones and onl.y

EDIT - 10/27/2008: Apologies to 360 fanboys - it seems PS3 fanboys have also responded in kind over at MetaCritic, deliberately lowering the user score of GeOW2. So it seems PS3 fanboys can be JUST AS IMMATURE as 360 fanboys.
Also, for all the idiots claiming that PS3 fanboys do the same for 360-exclusive games, instances of that seem to be drastically less in comparision. I'm referring to the Comments section of Fable 2. That seems to be a much quieter area, with much less flaming. If these idiots (you know who you are) were true, that Comments section would be a flame-fest of a similar nature.
Off-topic: Just got my Limited Collector's Edition of Fable 2, and am greatly enjoying it

maybe i'm a little bit of an Edge magazine fanboy, but i've never known anyone else to score more harsh than Edge (they gave the game a 10 for the very opposite of the above statement)...so people tell me, is this really a nine or ten game?

WHo gives a flying fuck? Heres an idea? GO AND PLAY IT. Review scores mean stuff all anyway. He gave it a 9, if I had playing it i may give it a 6, or 11, you may give it an 8. Does any of it matter? play it and find out. Like age, review scres are a bloomin number and should be ignored unless you are a dumbass who doesnt like to make their own mind up about things.

If I could look past this, I can see that the basic idea of the game seems interesting and potentially great in execution, albeit a kind of evolution of Lemmings and various platform games.

A 10 will inspire the reviewer because it gets so many things correct. It will be something truly groundbreaking and aesthetically successful, be consistently enjoyable, get the balance right in difficulty terms, be technically very impressive, and be polished to a shine. It will leave the player in no doubt that they're playing something special right from the word go and will continue to inspire and amaze throughout.
If that doesn't describe LBP then I don't know what does. Its should have been an easy 10. Edge got it right, EG haven't.
