GTA IV tops 1 million sales in UK News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

13 May, 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV has hung onto its top spot in the UK All Formats Chart this week despite a meaty 77 percent drop in sales.

It saw the acclaimed Rockstar game surge past the one million mark, as the format-favourite gap widened in Microsoft's favour: 62 percent of total sales were on Xbox 360, compared to 55 percent last week.

Wii Fit felt the burn a little and dropped 48 percent of last week's sales, but still managed to stretch its way to two.

Below was Wii Play at three, which swapped places with Mario & Sonic at the Olympics at four.

Iron Man did some science spectaculars to jump from 11 to five, with Call of Duty 4 at six, PES 2008 at seven, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue at eight.

Rounding off the chart were Mario Kart Wii at nine and Brain Training at 10, helping Nintendo prolong its crown as the most well represented publisher in the Top 10.

There were no new entries this week and little movement across the chart. Those that did a little hopping around were Carnival Games up from 37 to 22, and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Football Manager 2008 and WWE SmackDown vs Raw 2008 all managing to get back into the Top 40.

Uncle_fishboy -

once it stops being at the top of the charts it will die down am sure. Whilst its still in the limelight it wont go quietly.

Its the first major cross platform next gen game. Its going to be used by both sides for a while to come yet to prove a point for them. Not much we can do about it

It's the biggest game of the year so far, what do you expect? Pretty much every other site is the same. And no-one's forcing you to read (and comment on!) any of the articles.

Blimey, people really did go out and buy the Iron Man game. Suckers.

Wii Fit would sell a lot more if there was more stock about.

I don't know if the PS3 version is shite but everywhere i've gone to get a copy on the 360 (Game, Asda, etc, etc) , the store staff have told me their stock of 360 versions sell out in hours but there's always copies for the PS3 in stock. Maybe there are more GTA's being shipped for the PS3 or that the PS3 is actually shite and no one is buying it on the PS3?

The PS3's standard definition conversion of the high definition Xbox 360 original is actual quite close.

It's not an "arcade perfect" conversion, but as an in-house project it ended up close enough for most not to be able to notice the difference.

Yeah same here, I just posted this in another of the 1 zillion GTA4 threads..

"Not sure if this is restricted to Norn Iron only, but I couldn't find a copy of GTA 4 in either Belfast city centre or Derry since launch day.

The feckers would say things like 'yeah we got 7 in this morining, but they're all gone mate, sorry'. Grr.

So after trying this for 2 weeks to save having to wait for mail order to arrive (hindsight is 20:20) I caved and ordered at Amazon.

(360 by the way, PS3 copies of the game floating around everywhere). "

No, the PS3 version is not shite, it's just not quite as technically accomplished as the 360 in terms of resolution, framerate and anti-aliasing, that's all, not that it makes any difference once you start playing it as any differences are quickly forgotten about. Trust me, I've been playing both versions and despite preferring the visuals of the 360 version, I've actually clocked up more playtime on the PS3 version. Go figure! LOL

on the sale/war or shit thing, the price cuts realy do wonders, 360 was almost a no show here, now it's like THE machine..., go figure...

I have to agree that this game does not live up to the hype. I played it for around 2-3 hours on launch day and haven't touched it since. It's far too repetitive and whilst it's not a bad game visually, it just lacks depth. It's a GTA game so it'll always have it's fan base, but it's hardly breaking new ground or pushing either platform, is it?

Judging GTA IV after playing it for 3 hours shouldn't be allowed. Or... severely punished.

Lacks depth ? Oh my god... that's a first...
It even has a whole subway tunel, how about that for "depth" ?

@Andy247 - You really haven't given GTA IV a chance if you only played it for 2-3 hours. How can it be repetitive when you probably haven't tried the boats or helicopters, played the longer, more interesting missions, experienced the wonderful story, characters and dialogue, opened up all three islands, tried the sniper rifle or rocket launcher, etc., etc. You even get henchmen later on like Saints Row who you can call upon on whenever you want. I can't believe you think this game lacks depth... show me another game bar Oblivion that has more than this game offers? What on earth where you expecting... GTA IV is as good as sandbox games get right now with current technology and IMO is the best game I've played this year by miles. :?

Did you play/like the previous games?

One can't make a fair (or unfair, as a matter of fact) judgement of GTA 4 (heck... most "real games", actually) in 2 hours.
But I know people, who are good people, who just likes to browse through games for an hour or something, ya know... look at the graphics, say: "yay!" or "nay!", and than move along. GTA doesn't deserve that.~

Xerx3s, I'm not familiar with those grades. I just know it's the best sandbox game ever.

The slide between 8/10 up to 10/10 seems to depend largely on if you love to soak up the virtual worlds ambiance or not.

For me a genre defining 9/10 - better frame rate (greedy I know), much improved multiplayer front end less lag would have made this a 9.5/10 for me.

In addition to gaining a personal 10/10 I'd like a small aspect of the control of the character to be more like Assassins Creed as the climbing can feel inaccurate and a bit staccato.

SA was good, but got too stupid after a while.

Terminator 2 style chain guns? Jet Packs? Please...

The games size also meant that the level of detail we see in GTA4's Liberty City was pretty much none existent across the three cities and wildness of SA, streets often began to look the same and it was often far to obvious that the same building models were being used over and over again just with different skins.

So while GTA4 doesn't offer the same size world, it does make up for it in sheer content and detail.

IV hasn't got even a fraction of the content, in terms of missions or rewards. The collection and vigilante missions are rendered pointless, there's no more fire, ambulance or ice cream so there's no rewards there either. The girlfriend rewards are pointless, the customization is light, the areas all look pretty much the same...

The collection missions were always tedious in GTA but at least they were worth doing. Now 200 'packages' for something you can steal at any time in the game anyway?... ram it.

IV is amazingly light on content for a GTA game, I easily put 200 hours into SA for100% completion. I've run out of interesting things to do in IV already.

Wii Fit (Wii)
Wii Play (Wii)
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii, DS)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PC, DS, PSP)
Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (Wii)
Cooking Mama 2 (Wii, DS)
Game Party (Wii)
Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii)
Carnival: Funfair Games (Wii)

So can we put to bed the "Wii owners don't buy games" thing yet? All exclusive titles apart from Pro Evo (which is obviously getting its sales from Wii)
