Grand Theft Auto IV dated

Simultaneous worldwide.

Grand Theft Auto IV will be released simultaneously worldwide for PS3 and Xbox 360 on 29th April 2008.

"We are so excited to be releasing Grand Theft Auto IV," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games.

"We've pushed ourselves very hard to make something incredible and hope the game sets a new benchmark for interactive entertainment."

As we heard this morning, that pushing now includes using a mobile phone and having a drink after work.

    It'll be the same pattern as always. I'll book the day off to play it, they'll delay it a week and the boss will say "Tough" (and then point out that I'm a sad bastard for doing this).
  • Physically_Insane #11 4 years ago

    They said that it would be released between Feb - Apr, and they pick the 29th of April! I can't wait that long!

  • Fixxxer #18 4 years ago

    Of course the PS3 version will be better. It's basically fact what with all the extra levels and flying cat addons that the PS3 version will have.

    That was meant to say 'car' but I'm happy to leave it.
  • Lukus #19 4 years ago

    No, I think he meant the PS3 version will be Beta, as it won't be finished, obviously.

    Well GTA IV wasn't led on the PS3 so I'm swaying more toward buying the game for my Xbox 360. I guess the reviews will ultimately make my mind up for me but I'm going to guess at the PS3 having a worst framerate and poorer anti-aliasing as is typically of most multiformat games on both systems. Hopefully it won't but it is nice to have the choice of which version to go for.
  • Luvbeers #36 4 years ago

    I think it will be identical on both systems. The game was finished last fall... What's taking them so long is they've been trying to make the PS3 version on par with the 360.
  • Shrui #37 4 years ago

    Loved the beta comment.

    Having some experience as a European PS3 owner and the treatment we get from SCEE and lazy developers, I'm adopting a slightly cynical stance on the whole simultaneous and lest we forget at-least-as-good-as release on both formats.

    Please let this one buck the trend and steer the PS3 out of late'n'lazy port road (yeah I know there are decent PS3 versions but they are few).

  • miiiguel #44 4 years ago

    I read somewhere they're trying to optimize the smoke signs comunication system for all the PS3 users who don't have an headset.

    I laughed so hard when a collegue asked, in disbelief, after I saw him playing CoD4 online, how the heck did he talk with his team mates: "but..., but..., can you talk to other ppl while playing in a 360?"

  • DSKUK #46 4 years ago

    Lets see - the game was meant to b out in october....and then the extra content was meant to b around spring so lets say april...that means we should either see the content around the date the game was meant to come out, or they release it around the summer drought

    who knows (apart from Rockstar and MS)
  • penhalion #47 4 years ago

    yawn...I'll wait for the overhyped reviews. Then see what the actual game is like first.
  • defdaz #48 4 years ago

    If you got both a 360 and a PS3 then choosing a platform for this is a no brainer. The 360 will have exclusive episodic content!!
  • Iora #50 4 years ago

    Yeah but X360 lack of harddrive is going to make this a loading monsta surely!
  • El_MUERkO #51 4 years ago

  • Jonsend #52 4 years ago

    If they were identical I would go with the PS3 version (the less time spent on the 360 the longer until it (inevitably) breaks) but because of the episodic exclusive content I'll grab the 360 version.
  • Greebo #53 4 years ago

    I mentioned it in the other thread, but according to Rockstar, both the PS3 and 360 versions are now identical (although the delay was in part down to getting the PS3 up to standard - but we already know it's a tricky platform to progam).

    So for me it's the 360 version so I've got the option for the extra content (and the PS3 is brand new and I've yet to get used to the lack of rumble!).
  • Greebo #54 4 years ago

    Headbog:

    Good point well made. But a limitation can be overcome. That article is quite old now.

    "GTA" games haven't missed their announced release dates before. When the delay was announced in August, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors that "the reason it is being delayed is almost strictly technological problems — not problems, but challenges." Barrera offered a little more detail to MTV News this week: "It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that. Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical.""

    @ headbog - That article came from an Official PlayStation Magazine interview. So don't you think that question may have been loaded?
  • Greebo #56 4 years ago

    I think my point still stands. Rockstar reckons that the two are identical.

    Now this may be marketing crap and we'll soon find out, but that to me means that the HDD 'limitation' of the 360 is not an issue any more.

    For 360 owners this is great news, as those with core/arcade models don't need an HDD to enjoy it!
  • goodshape #57 4 years ago

    "I think it will be identical on both systems. The game was finished last fall... What's taking them so long is they've been trying to make the PS3 version on par with the 360."

    The developers were still working on game *content* this year - so that is in fact a crock of shit. PS3 engine was behind the 360 one but as to the game having been finished last fall - no.

    I'll wait for reviews for comparisons, but extra content is leaning me towards the 360 version.

    "What I want to know about GTA4 is if the horrible wobbly driving has been tightened up, and if it achieves decent framerates."

    I loved GTA3+ driving. With the right car and excessive use of the handbrake you could really wang it round corners. I think the physics engine is different to previous games in the series - see other news article - so maybe you'll see some improvement there.
  • DrDamn #61 4 years ago

    Quote from other article on physics ... "Physics from the Euphoria engine have had a considerable impact as well, allowing cars to drive realistically and chases to be exciting rather than frustrating."

    Probably direct quote from marketing blurb, but you live and hope :)

    if the cunts at rockstar hadn't delayed it for 6 months after the last supposedly 'definite' date, and now announced that the new release date (window given feb-apr) turns out right at the end of that window then maybe i would have supported them by buying this game.

    but now i'll settlle my differences with them by having it for fucking free off usenet. you see rockstar, everything balances you twats.

    looking forward to my free game in recompense in the days leading up to the 29th (we nearly always get the final retail versions on the groups a couple of days before the paying fuckers)

    i have both 360 and ps3... i want to get the ps3 version because the 360 makes a horrible noise when it's switched on. however it's a multiplatform game and Rockstar have only ever demo'd the 360 version this is a pretty sure bet that the 360 version will be the better version.
  • konnsky #71 4 years ago

    goty 2008 confirmed. can't wait!
  • Ryze #72 4 years ago

    @ Iora, headbog, all of the other shit talkers who are bitter after paying £425 and still paying £50 per game with no rumble yet and shit online features:

    The 360 version WILL use the HDD

    Even if you're playing on a Core, the 360 has a DVD drive with a much quicker seek rate and generally better transfer rate than the P$3, plus more memory, which is more flexible. Plus it's the lead platform.

    Suck it up children ;p
  • chischis #73 4 years ago

    No PC version? Then Rockstar can bugger off.
  • DivideAndCombo #74 4 years ago

    I like it! When's the 32x version out? :D :D Personally I want to see the Jaguar version of GTA4.
  • TurboBailey #75 4 years ago

    God... there is alot of bitterness in these messages.

    Does it really matter which version is better. We all know its gonna be an awesome experience whichever version you get.
    GTA4 will be optimised to take benefit of both systems different architecture.

    These hate filled messages ruin eurogamer. Grow up!

  • Ryze #77 4 years ago

    @headbog

    A sizable chunk of the P$3's 256Mb of main memory is taken up by the OS. The OS also swallows a chunk of the video RAM. God knows what it's actually being used for, as fuck all much can be done while playing games aside from turning off the console or quitting the game.

    Maybe there's Blu-Ray software permanently resident in RAM, or something else sufficiently Sony-esque...

    Get a grip lad. Everyone was reporting MS paid millions for EXCLUSIVE episodic content confirmed by R*. Yet you you say that this will be of the form of a DVD extras which may also come to the PS3!!
    Keep telling yourself that, it may make you feel better!!
  • bad09 #82 4 years ago

    @headbog

    Sorry man I gotta say don't you realize how sad it is you are having fanboy arguments over a game which is identical on both formats. Come on man life is too short!

    Oh, and three words to make you happy....Xbox extra content ;)
  • Kryon #83 4 years ago

    "extra content for the PS3 and PC versions, does it. Where did you read that NO extra content will be made available for these consoles? "

    A PC is not a console.

    "They only see what they want to see and form opinions around that. "

    A bit like a person who denies that AA improves visuals and jaggies don't matter or that extra exclusive episodes don't count, funny that, eh.

    HeadKnob, I now crown you queen of the fanboys! Well done!
  • drxym #84 4 years ago

    I won't touch GTA IV until I seem some proper previews instead of the emasculated non-previews we've seen so far. I say that as someone who owns most of the previous games.

    I despise hype, and all Rockstar is producing is hype. Every day that passes without actual footage makes me think they've got something to hide. Now maybe they haven't but I don't see why I should be like the morons who plonk their money down on first day solely on hype because Rockstar won't show proper game footage, or decent previews. If the game is that amazing then I'm sure I can wait the few days it takes for reviews to arrive that say as much.

  • DrDamn #85 4 years ago

    @Farticus
    I think that a standard HDD in the Xbox 1 was a very good step and the Core machine was a backward step for these reasons. I don't think Core only users are going to suffer all that much here - but it must be a bit of a kerfuffle to work with the two options for the same format. Probably nothing compared to the kerfuffle that is programming effectively on the Cell though ;)

    The memory footprint for PS3 is apparently coming down significantly in 2.20. So if this is pre-GTA release and they have been able to use it then this may be less of an issue. Inclusion of in game friends list and messaging does still carry too much of an overhead compared to the 360 though. These sort of improvements in the PS3 OS have been far too long in coming considering the impact it must have for developers.
  • DrDamn #86 4 years ago

    @Headbog
    I've seen and played Oblivion on both a 360 with HD and PS3. It really wasn't all that big a deal. Maybe there is an argument that the game could have been better if it could have been writen from the outset as HD only. However I doubt this. I suspect the game was written to best take advantage of a HD where present as the lead platform was a PC wasn;t it?

    @Headbog - Wow... u rant a lot...

    Re your AA comment, you did say that AA only makes a difference in screenshots... which is just nonsense. Go back and read what you said.

    Re the exclusive content, Rockstar will be making extra content for all 3 platforms AS WELL AS exclusive content for the Xbox 360. As far as I am aware, there is no content appearing on other platforms that is not also appearing on the 360. If you know different to this then please quote your source.

    Just thought I'd join in the fun ;)
  • L42yB #90 4 years ago

    @Headbog -

    I see you chose to ignore the points I made showing where you had stated something that was not true. That's OK, I understand ;)

    Re your rant about the harddrive, I have to say that ultimately I think you are correct. It does limit game development and having worked in Xbox 360 Cert I know first hand that it really does limit development of certain types of games. I thought the core SKU was silly when it first came out and I still think it's not a great idea.

    That being said, the PS2 had the same effect on game development for the original Xbox and there always be a 'lowest common denominator'.

    However, your method of arguing does not do you any good. Simply ignoring some points while attacking others is what I like to refer to as 'selective hearing' (or reading in this case) and it is extremely annoying. The reason so much is being repeated is because you have not really responded to a lot of it (such as the points I made) or you deliberately mis-interpret what is said.

    Finally (and this point goes out to a ot of you), name calling is only acceptable if it is funny. Otherwise it just makes you look stupid.

    farticus, "Except all we've seen is shite PS3 exclusives, apart from the rather good motorstorm. So in fact having a HDD as standard has done nothing for the machine.". Actually it has. If it speeds up loading (and it does), and games are allowed to use the HDD since its standard (and they are), then a game will benefit from enhanced loading times. Trying to deny this is kind of pathetic really and flies in the face of the obvious seek / read advantages of an HDD over a DVD or Blu Ray drive. The HDD is there and games make good use of it. So what's your point? And there have been some rather good, nay outstanding exclusives on the PS3. Again, why are you trying to claim different? Are you that insecure that you can't live in a world where good exclusives exist on every platform?
  • Kryon #94 4 years ago

    My goodness, does that bell-end ever shut up?

    /sigh
  • L42yB #95 4 years ago

    @Headbog -

    Here is what you said about AA (I quote as you seem to have forgotten):
    "PS: The PS3 has just as much ram as the 360, but it also has the addded benefit of faster VRAM. The 360 only advantage is the EDRAM - but that is only useful for AA, which is only really of any benefit in screenshots. "

    My point (and I promise you I do have one, or several as the case may be) is that what you said there was an outright lie. Specifically: "but that is only useful for AA, which is only really of any benefit in screenshots"

    I didn't mention anything about the PS3 or the 360's abilities nor did I make any reference to your comparison. I simply pointed out that what you had said was not true. That is all ;)

    And I agree that the PS3 this generation is in a similar position to where the Xbox was in the last gen (i.e. that it has potential for better games), and sure, there may well be exclusives that outshine anything on the 360, but in my opinion that hasn't happened yet. That's just my opinion tho :)

    "The problem here isnt me - it's the near bloody mindednes of those who refuse to admit anything can be good about the PS3,and twist arguments to suit themselves. "

    Pot? Kettle?

    I am not disagreeing with you, but you are doing the same thing that they are. You are simply on the other side of the same coin.
  • Kryon #96 4 years ago

    Farticus man, be fair, I really liked Uncharted....Oh..Hold on...no, no..I'm thinking of Monopoly, now that was a good game!
  • DrDamn #97 4 years ago

    @Headbog
    "1. Whatever frame rate problems you saw were clearly your invention as I have played to chaper 12, and have yet to see any.
    2. The tearing is only very slight, and far less than you exaggerate them to be."

    Tearing *is* a frame rate issue, you do know that don't you?

    What ever you may think of Farticus bias it is absolutely not the case. He always comes to the PS3 stuff I've shown him with an open mind and his opinions are based on *his* experiences. In particular Motorstorm he has been very impressed by. He may occasionally be a bit harsh in his replies but you do well at giving him good reason :)
  • DrDamn #98 4 years ago

    Tearing is caused by a choppy framerate. (or even a chippy one if you like).

    You are basing you opinion of him on comments in an internet forum, I'm basing mine on knowing the bloke for 30-odd years. Obviously you will come to a better assessment of so I'll just have to bow to your uber knowledge.
  • fightman3b #99 4 years ago

    looking forward to this fucking game actually.

    will probably take it for free owing to the rockstar cunts delaying it. all balances out in the end you motherfuckers.

    have a good weekend nobs, fightman will return soon.
  • Kryon #100 4 years ago

    headbag, I thought you claimed to be knowledgeable about these consoles architectures and the way in which said tech is utilised? Funny then that you don't even understand the most basic of frame rate issues. How many times do you have to get pwned before it sinks in that you're a bit of a nonce? Everybody else can see it, why can't you?
  • Kryon #101 4 years ago

    headflob, you just prove over and over again that you're an imbecile who knows NOTHING about anything. I can't be bothered to explain it to you myself so this is what Naughty Dog's very own Evan Wells had to say on the subject -

    "Screen tearing is something that occurs when your frame rate dips below 30Hz. When you drop frame rate you have a choice to either drop all the way to 20Hz, or allow the screen to tear and only have the frame rate drop to 28 or 29Hz. We felt that with the frequency that it occurs, that the latter choice had a smaller impact on most player’s experiences. In fact, the vast majority of people don’t even notice it. Now ideally, our frame rate would never drop below 30Hz, but with the amount of stuff we’re doing every frame in Uncharted, inevitably it will happen occasionally. However, it’s definitely something we will be able to improve on in future games as we make optimizations to our engine."

    [link url=http://threespeech .com/blog/?p=767
    ]http://threespeech .com/blog/?p=767
    [/link]

    So please, headbag, if you're going to try and impress people with your amazing tech knowledge, at least try and have a f***ing clue what you're talking about first. Don't blindly make arguments and lie to bolster your own fanboy opinion because in the end it makes you look extremely feeble minded.
  • Kryon #102 4 years ago

    So headcock, in the light of my last post....

    "I clearly know a heck of a lot more than you."

    Nope, sadly you clearly don't because I just pwned you.

    "But what does NOT sit true is your lambasting of the game for chioppy framerates when there are none"

    Well, Evan Wells seems to think there is and it's his f***ing game you knob!

    "Youve done little more than the exact opposite of this - talking shit about things you know little about"

    PS. I've truly enjoyed lavishing in the sweet nectar of your SDF tears.

    Just out of interest, not wishing to fuel any fires, who do you think would win if yous arguing had a fight in an alleyway, or an octagonal caged structure?
  • convercide #107 4 years ago

    Does the octagonal structure start on its side and then is pushed down a hill so they all die and we don't have to read the console wars going on?

    It's funny how these game discussions soon degenerate to this on here. They occur in every thread. For Halo 3 you had PS3 fans slating it. For Uncharted you had 360 fans slating it. It doesn't matter which console a game is released on. If it's a good game then it's worth buying. If it is a multi-format release then it's (usually) great on both consoles. Fair enough, some games were bodged on initial release on PS3 but they've been patched since. At least no-one has yet had to suffer horrific conversions like Mortal Kombat on the SNES which, if I recall rightly, had most of the arcade draw features removed from it. Can't we all just get along and enjoy the great games? 2007 was a stormer for great games and hopefully 2008 will be just as good.

    But then again, I've been a gamer for 20+ years, so what the fuck would I know?

    Ar, the perpetual fight between 360 and PS3 owners continues.

    Look, let's face up to some facts here. In the past, yes, 360 conversions had a definite advantage over the PS3 versions which can be attributed to the 360 being out for longer and for its architecture being better understood. However, we have now reached a point where the difference between them in some games (ie DMC4 and COD4) is very hard to spot and it is possible for a multi-platform game to actually be superior on the PS3 (ie Burnout Paradise).

    Many developers are going on record saying there is a lot of untapped potential in the PS3 but how often do you hear the same about the 360? The truth is that the 360 is pretty much maxed out and it's not had a game released in the last year that looks better than Gears of War, whereas PS3 games are looking better all the time. For example, Unreal Tournament is a big leap over Resistance (possibly better even than GOW) and MGS4, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 are looking even better.

    The point is that with PS3 games becoming more and more superior, sales narrowing the gap between it and the 360, and the PS3 simply having a better line-up of games this year, there's little for 360 owners to feel smug about. With regards to GTA4, I expect both versions to be identical.

    @headbog

    I think what frustrates me most about many 360 owners is how short-sighted they are. They seem so keen to announce the death of the PS3 without actually looking at the facts. If they really think that 360 versions of multi-platform games will always be superior to the PS3 versions and that the 360 has any chance at all of staying ahead of the PS3 in terms of sales, they are sadly misguided.

    We can see with games like Uncharted and Unreal Tournament what the PS3 is capable of and just about every review of Burnout Paradise has said the PS3 version has superior graphics. And the rumour that Crysis is coming to the PS3 but not the 360 is an interesting one.

    The absolute 100% fact of the matter is that the graphical quality of PS3 conversions now equal those on the 360 and once the PS3's sales match those of the 360 later this year we'll start to see more developers switch to the PS3 as the lead platform, as has happened alread with Burnout.

    Anyway, returning to the subject of whether the PS3 version of GTA4 will match the 360's, check this out straight from Rockstar:
