Square Enix targets 1st June reveal.

Square Enix may be about to unveil a brand new Carmageddon game.

Says who? Says the - drum roll - www.Carmageddon.com countdown timer.

At the time of writing there are 11 days and 17 hours left. That means the clock will chime zero at 9am BST on Wednesday, 1st June.

Carmageddon was cancelled as a series during the development of Carmageddon 4 in 2005.

Carmageddon, released first in 1997, spiced up car racing by granting race-time for wrecking competing vehicles and smashing into pedestrians. Such a premise attracted a lot of controversy, resulting in a 10 month to-and-fro as Eidos waited for the BBFC to clear the game for UK sale.

God i used to love Carmageddon TDR2000, ok it wasnt the first game in the series but i was at the best point in my game career. Nothing beats it for just shear plain fun (perhaps the Duke) The only problem i see is the media as they never liked it in the first place, and didnt have the clout of the GTA franchise to shut them up.

Cant wait for the Daily Mail to get hold of this, I remember the press coverage the first time round when I was a kid. Had so much fun with the second game (didnt own the first). The joy of a slow-mo replay, crashing through a glass shop front then up the stairs and out the second floor window with pedestrians stuck to the bumper was simply brilliant.

Actually, I say pedestrians, but weren't they zombies?

I'm only interested if it will be like the first Carmageddon and won't include zombies. The successors were really disappointing in my opinion as they completely lost the edge and (arguably) even the playability of the first one.
Hell, I'd blindly pay for a downloadable HD version of Carmageddon 1.

For this to work it needs only the following things...

1) A rich environment, full of nooks, crannies, ramps, rooftops, etc, etc, etc.
2) A rich selection of vehicles, ranging from the good to the very poor
3) A way to randomly assign vehicles to players at the start of the race
4) An exact copy of the network game styles from Carmageddon 1

Make this happen, with a bang up to date graphics engine and it will be GOLDEN. I couldn't give a fuck about red blood, green blood or robots with a lack of blood, just make it the same as Carmageddon 1.

Oh my god, please bring out a modern Carmageddon 2. The others were fun and everything, and while the pedestrian-smashing was funny, nothing could compare to the crazy antics you could pull in C2. I still fondly remember using that giant spring to launch a semi up into the air and through the second story windows of some building.

It was Zero Signal over the intro to the first game... i made media studies project around a promo video for the game, included the 'Fucking Great' PCZone review quote and 'Ban death game' - The Pope as some of review bits i added.

Carmegeddon 2 was an amazing game. The platforming bits were mental and hate filled, but were just as rewarding as the bosses in Demon's Souls. One of the gems of the original PC dynasty for sure.

The UK version had the zombies and the German version had the robots. I remember when I picked up my copy of Carmageddon from Game that it came with a free copy of a PC gaming magazine which conveniently had the pedestrian patch on the coverdisc... Zombies? What Zombies?

Damn shame I can't get the game to work in Windoze 7 though. 64bit OSes don't seem to like 16bit installers at all.

How is it that there is no news other than the countdown timer whatsoever! I can usually find at least som tidbit of info, but this seems to have just appeared from one of my, and no doubt some of your, dreams.

I love Carmageddon back in the day, but I'm really not sure what sort of place it would have in modern gaming. Will the evolution of open world sandboxes, being able to drive anywhere and run over pedestrians really isn't such a stand out concepy any more.

I hope they can do something exciting with it, but I'm really not sure what it would take to find relevancy in todays market.

Fantastic, I hope it has the awesome replay features of the old games.

Even the third one was a laugh multiplayer, although we found the 'bomb' game was a lot funnier if you tried to keep the bomb rather than give it away. A good player would have the 'kangaroo' wep so at the end they could get airbourne, then use the afterburner to rocket skywards ending with a big firework display for the other players as the nuke went off...

...
