Report - Warhawk 2 details leaked

PS3 sequel rumoured for 2012 release.

Warhawk 2 is currently in development for PlayStation 3 with a 2012 launch rumoured, according to a new report.

Just Push Start has claimed that Sony recently invited a selection of players of the 2007 PlayStation 3 original to take a look at an early build of the sequel.

A few scraps of gameplay information has since seeped out of that showcase. Apparently the title will feature a story mode and full co-op. There will be online multiplayer support for up 32 players over 25 maps.

Players will supposedly be able to build bunkers for themselves, though they can destroyed by the enemy, while improvements have been made to the combat system, camera and graphics engine too.

All this shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Developer Lightbox Interactive teased a new project earlier this year. That game was thought to be called Starhawk judging by a trademark filing, though it now seems the developer has switched to the less ambiguous Warhawk 2.

"Keeping the new game under wraps for this long is tough, and very hard on our fans. But will be worth it all in the end!!" Tweeted President Dylan Jobe.

The original Warhawk launched on PSone back in 1995. The franchise was then rebooted for PlayStation 3 in 2007, scoring 8/10 from Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter.

Lost count how many hours I spent on the first one, one of the early ps3 greats. Looking forward to this one!

Loved the first game and glad there finally will be a sequel. Just hope they won't ruin it by making it another COD or BF clone.

    25 MAPS?!? Mind = blown.

I didn't play the original as much as I should have due to time commitments, but man it was AWESOME.

Is the original worth playing still? I wasn't a PS3 owner at the time so never got a chance to play it at launch...

Warhawk is a great game. Extremely well balanced and good fun. As for the maps, don't forget the original had maps at various sizes to support different numbers of players. Could be 5 maps at various sizes.

Still my most played game of this generation. 2012 seems sooo far away

Bout bleeding time. Honestly, this was the first item I bought from Sony's PSN and overall was quite pleased with what was offered. I'm hoping this time for greater animations, more creative maps and more vehicle types. This cant come soon enough...

Yes! Can't wait to see some screens or footage. More at E3?
  • handsonhips101 #14 1 year ago

Yes! I was an early ps3 adopter and got this on release. My friends who all bought ps3's post modern warfare refuse to play it, won't even give it a chance. Sequel may get me some real friends to play with.

I keep getting tempted to buy this, but am I too late? If there are still people playing I assume they are all really good and I wouldn't get very far starting now unless I played it constantly?

I think its more like 5 maps, with 5 configurations per map like the 1st game. Otherwise that is a very big jump for warhawk 2, most games with smaller maps don't reach 20 maps.

For such fantastic news it's such a shame that the comments section is laden with imbeciles trying to sell dodgy merchandise.

Warhawk (for me) is/was worse than crack.

How about having no more trophies that literally take years to get. Cause I just gave up the game altogether once those were the only ones left.
  • Widge #19 1 year ago

Possibly one of the best multiplayer games this gen, it was perfectly balanced.

Vehicular control was great, but I really do not think the 3rd person on foot shooting action was good enough. Used to be a fan of Warhawk, and played it regularly. Have high hopes for the sequel in that it addresses mobile infantry controls at least...

8/10 my ar$e. Utterly brilliant game, mostly because it wasn't stupidly hardcore, so n00bs can still have fun. Still the most accessible online shooter, and by far the best dogfighting game out. If they keep it as a CoD/KZ Lite, more fun less faff, I'm in.

Eraysor - it's got an effective matchmaking system to keep new folk with new folk where possible, but your difficulty might be finding enough new folk to play with. But even if you end up in a high level game, it's far more forgiving than CoD or Killzone - there's no super perks for experienced players so you won't often get whacked 3 seconds after spawning. So for the price - give it a go. You can set up an empty game to play with yourself to get used to the controls before you head online.

I'm really hoping that it is a Starhawk - the slightly scifi element in the old one was OK, but if you remember the concept stuff leaked of the single player game with air attacks on giant flying fortresses, a more scifi setting would rock. Still waiting for a new G Police, and hope this will be it.

    BOOM!

WarHawk got me into multiplayer. Only thing i played for a year...still dip in every now and then....

Fuck the Olympics, this is what 2012 is about!!

The third person on foot shooting was my favourite part. I stuck to my feet the majority of the time and only used vehicles for transporting myself (and flags). I'd hope a sequel would be third person

Such an awesome game, and some of the most fun multi-player carnage I've ever had.
  • woodyrulesok #25 1 year ago

I hope they don't stray too far with the sequel. As many have said already, the last one was so well balanced.
I might have to play this tonight now!
