Marathon Evil (Mac)

by WOPR

"What the hell?" you may think when reading the title above. However, any Mac users reading (and Windows users later on) will remember this great game straight away. Marathon was by far and away the best FPS on the Mac, and was made by a company who you might know - Bungie. Tragically they were later bought by Microsoft, but apparently they redeemed themselves by adapting an FPS they were writing for the Mac. I believe it was called Halo...

Anyway, Marathon was a good single-player game, but an awesome multiplayer title. In its heyday of 1996 I was freelancing in a Mac-based studio and as soon as six o'clock struck all thoughts of work were dumped and at least the next two hours were spent playing this over the LAN. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we heard about a patch for the game that went by the name of 'Evil'. This was no simple patch however as it upgraded pretty much every aspect of the game. New sounds, better graphics and best of all were the new maps. I can't remember the correct name for the best level as we just called it 'The Cupboard'. It was very small, with lots of lifts, hiding places and teleport points. I can still picture it now, and I haven't played the game for about four years.

The controls were spot-on, graphics were good for the time, and the sound was great if you had decent speakers. Playing this with three other players is easily the best multiplayer gaming experience I’ve had, and if you've got a Mac, even a 5 year old one, try and find a copy of Marathon and then download the 'Evil' upgrade - you'll love it.
