Sacrifice resolution for a smooth gameplay...eh ? not sure about that.

3rd party Devs need to pull them themselves together, and sony needs to help them, there is a lot of untapped power in the ps3 hardware, just watch this newest Killzone 2 video with the real-time level intro, it looks amazing:

    http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/18922

I don't expect 3rd parties to match this video, but the video does tell us that the power is there, its just that most developers don't want to invest the time and money to extract it, so its up to sony to help them.

A small scale shooter with 5 vs 5 maximum matches, Vs a large scale shooter with 60 player matches. Shane kim never fails to amuse me.

I think he's worried that Gears 2, while still visually impressive, isnt receiving the same hype treatment of the first game, it will still sell well though, the entire resistance vs gears 1 thing is flawed, thats a launch title against a 2nd generation game on a system with a much larger install base at the time (as Eurogamer has kindly mentioned).

Things will be different this time, Resistance 2 is a 3rd gen title from Insomniac, if anything, gears will no longer have a visual advantage over resistance 2, but resistance 2 will certainly have a scale advantage over gears 2. not that it matters much to fanboys, but for new system adopters it may very well do.

  • Xbox 360 sales hit 19 million worldwide

  • Madlax 15/05/2008

Microsoft is destined to be 3rd, but they know it, so its not something surprising for them, if anything they are probably happy with their current position.

    I know one thing though.

Sony will release its PS3 successor at-least 3 years after the 360 successor and the Woo, i.e microsoft will pull the plug much earlier, and sony will wait and focus on building a robust network service. the PS4 will not directly compete against the xbox720.

Its clear that sony's current main focus is building a robust online network, they realize the amount of opportunities there, i hate quoting miiiguel but it is true, boxes come and go, the online infrastructure is always there for the company.

The way i see these numbers, it tells me that by the end of 2009 PS3 world-wide install base will be on par with the 360 install base, and we will start to hear more about the the 360 successor.

    Games are getting too...shallow.

No offense to Epic, this is probably how most game developers are doing there games, but why are the concepts, scenarios and story so shallow, its always the 'good' guys against the savage 'bad' guys, there is almost no depth in games anymore, this seems more prominent in american games.

While i do realize that this is to appeal to the target market, which adores such shallow ideas, thus the word 'badass' is constantly repeated, and although by saying that i,v answered my own question, i still need to ask. ;)

When will we ever have games that are more than just 'kill the bad-guy', with 'bad-ass' characters spitting 'bad-ass' words that lack any depth or meaning.

The way i see it, the more mainstream games become, the more shallow they will be.

I think the only way to achieve deeper scripts and scenarios, is for easily accessible game developement tools to become available to users world-wide, then we may start to see unique creations by different individuals.

    Seems i got carried away.....now this looks 'bad-ass'. ;)

  • Japan surpassed by West - Kojima

  • Madlax 14/05/2008

I do kind of agree with him, not entirely though. and i mostly blame japanese gamers if anything for not embracing HD gaming.

Also, the 'west' isnt a single entity, its more than a dozen countries each having its own developers and are massively funded, Japan is just one country, while i dont think they are on the edge of technology when it comes to creating games, the most unique and imaginative games still come from japan though.

If you look at the western production in the last 2 years, you will see lots of technologically impressive games with no real innovation in them, in fact the only innovative western game i,v seen till now, is little big planet and thats an unreleased product.

Howoever, if you look at the current situation worldwide, the industry leader system (the Wii) is still japanese, many of the best selling games are still japanese, so its not all doom and gloom Kojima-san yet. ;)

If the PS3 manages to gain ground in japan, then this may encourage japanese developers to jump on the HD wagon, this would mean more japanese games for the PS3 and even the 360.

As far i know, the Wii isnt really a 3rd party developer dream, it seems most software sales are from nintendo itself. i dont think 3rd party japanese devs are loving that.

    Can you elaborate ?

I dont recall i ever mentioned that the PS3 version would outsell the 360 one in the US, i also never expect the PS3 to pull ahead the 360 in the US, there is something other than 'good games' that makes US customers buy that thing even after the RRoD 'fiasco', something the foreign PS3 doesnt have,

No surprise in here, Game sold well according to the install base of each system.

If anything, i think the PS3 did very well, a 64% to 36% split ratio [translates into 1.7:1] in the US, the region where its most hated, it actually managed to compete with the 360 in its Home-turf, even though it has less than half the user-base.

The PS3 version will still pull ahead overall in Europe [except the UK], and in Japan, so each system gets a part of the pie.

  • Madlax 11/05/2008

Haha....this comments section is a mess.

Gears 2 looks nice, it looks similar to the first one, but the technical limitations of the system and the Engine are still there.

You still have a small, narrow moving space in Gears 2, they are depending on heavy scripting to creat the 'illlusion' of a warzone, in reality there is a limited number of enemies at each given time, even the shot where he targets a dozen locust was very fastly cut, probably so that we cant see the low polygon models.

Its like they are putting you in this small controled enviroment, and they throw things at you to give you the feeling of a grand battle, something god of war did too,

I think they did well for whats essentially a multiplayer engine, but there is a limit to what they can do, the special effects are really poor, the animations are still poor. the 'actual' enviroments are still small 'and by enviroments i mean enviroments that you can actually reach and interact with'.

Its unfair to compare this to Killzone 2, that is built on a properiatory engine with a huge budget on an overall more powerfull system, its in a different level. ;)

now, gentelmen, you may continue the useless rants.

I can still see the technical limitations though, the moving space is still narrow and small, they are depending on scripting to create the 'illusion' of a warzone, the shot in the video where he shoots a dozen locust was fastly cut, probably because they didnt want us to see the low-polygon models.

I think Epic are doing fine for whats essentially a multiplatform engine, game will sell regardless of graphical and visual fidelty, it has hype surrounding it. and Hype is what sells games this Gen. ;)

One of the principles of 'capitalism' is competition, which is clearly violated by Microsofts monopoly over the OS market. thus there is no real 'growth' in the OS market and Vista is a clear showcase for this.

    Good post.

At the Playstation day event i believe, Sony showed sales chart that shows that the PS3 LTD passed the 360 LTD in europe, Greenberg cant simply make claims without proper figures.

As long as Microsoft remains to have a monopoly over the OS market, they will have endless funds to force themselves in every market. millions of unaware people pour billions into microsofts pocket because they are unaware of the alternatives to windows, and some dont even realize they are forced to 'pay' for windows with every OEM computer.

This must stop, its all a matter of spreading awareness, thankfully both Linux and macOS are slowly but steadily eating into Windows market share, Vista has made the job this much easier.

The only reason why microsoft entered the gaming market is to protect their monopoly, which is exactly why it hurts me watching euros supporting the 360, not realizing that they are helping keep the monopoly over their computers, their companies and their pockets.

I still hope for a day where people can choose computers free of windows in every point of the world, i can see it eventually happening. lets hope it doesnt take long.

  • Madlax 08/05/2008

No surprise in here, the market has proved that high-tech hardware and 'fancy' graphics arent the main priority, the most successful console for this gen also happens to be the only one with 'last-gen' hardware....the Wii.

There is no reason for Sony to rush another system after all the technology investments, most of which are long-term, with its current tech the ps3 could very much stay competitive for 8 years. its also good for developers, with the high development cost of current HD consoles, i,d think they want to extend this generations life-time cycle.

I think the PS3 will do fine in europe, it will stay competitive in the US, however Japan is a problem for now, the PS3 needs a redesign for its size and aesthetics to appeal to the japanese market, also bundling the system with FFXIII and maybe they can emulate a surge similar to the PSP redesign surge.

Themes and wallpapers are free everywhere, in my Ubuntu installation i have over a dozen different themes for icons, window themes, and wallpapers all are proffesional looking. and they cost me nothing.

Only with the Xbox360 computer entertainment system do we get the honour of paying for things that we always had for free, from themes and wallpapers to online gaming and 'properiatory' storage mediums.
