  • Editor's blog: A brief note about "GamerGate"

  • EpicMike 03/09/2014

Hello Eurogamer, I've been a regular visitor of your site for many years now, barely a day went by without me checking your website for news and articles about my favourite hobby. I've read some really interesting pieces on your site and Eurogamer was one of my most trusted sites for reviews.

So it's with great disappointment that I say this: I am never returning to Eurogamer.

Nothing less than a retraction of this "blog" and a sincere apology will change my mind, you have thrown your lot in with the corrupt, hateful elitists who have embarked on a campaign of belittlement and shaming at the people who have the 'audacity' to ask for transparency and accountability in games journalism. It really is crushing to see how much contempt you have for the people behind GamerGate that you would link those three lopsided articles, you didn't even have the decency to feign impartiality. I guess you didn't see the tweet where Devin Faraci called us "worse than ISIS", if not; shame on you for still linking to his article.

I am 100% behind you when you say: "a more diverse and inclusive culture is essential to the future of video games". Unfortunately, you picked the side in complete opposition to that.

GamersGate wants a gaming community where all people are free to voice their opinion, even if it goes against the grain, not the homogenised, cliquey, SJW agenda driven elitists attempting to shame people into silence.

  • Why we need more developers like Zoe Quinn

@mega-gazz Regardless of her intentions, depression is a very taboo subject that affects a lot of people, any attempt to highlight the issue and educate people deserves recognition.

You're right though, I doubt her intentions were entirely altruistic when developing the game. Zoey is after all part of the holier than thou clique that loves patting themselves on the back about how "progressive" they are will dismissing anyone who doesn't stand with them as scum.

@ApokNyneWheel Like I said, I found Depression Quest to be a moderately insightful view on mental health in the 20 minutes or so it took me to finish it. Zoey Quinn deserves props for developing it and drawing attention to such an important issue, regardless of how she has conducted herself in other areas of her career and personal life (and I'm not touching that discussion with a 10 foot pole).

But lets be honest with ourselves; it's a barely interactive text adventure that's over in about half an hour, yet it's being hailed as the glorious future of video games. Far more deserving games are being overlooked while the gaming sites continue to heap praise and awards on their new darling. You're right, it is a small subsection of gaming, so why am I constantly hearing about what a masterpiece it is and how it's the future of gaming?

My "find a new hobby" line was perhaps a bit overly dramatic, but I'm still a bit raw from Leigh Alexander's (a writer I once greatly respected) article about how "gamer" is now a dirty word and how the bright future of the industry is the enlightened ones like Zoey Quinn and Anna Antropy making glorified flash games (that are about "issues") while anyone who criticises this stance is a "howling troll" in her words.

@ApokNyneWheel That was really uncalled for but seems to be standard response when people criticise Zoey Quinn: belittlement and judgement. I have to ask though; who is the "us" you're referring to? Reply +8

Shameful Eurogamer, utterly shameful. This site was once my haven from the Zoe Quinn and all her ilk worship that's poisoned many other of the gaming sites. DQ is a moderately insightful text adventure that anyone with any knowledge of code could throw together in a weekend, it does not deserve the praise heaped on it. If this is really the future of "gaming" then maybe I need to find a new hobby. Reply +10

So what you're saying is; the game is a lark and full of errors?

Played this for a few hours last night with some friends and actually had a good time. If you're a fan of Resident Evil and have three like minded comrades to play with there's a lot of fun to be had. If not, probably best let this one pass you by, as a game itself its rather mediocre. Reply +2
