here are some very good quality freeware plattformers.
made to a request from captaineurogamer.
i have played many many freeware plattformers.
damn its so much boring stuff out.
i think i have tested all of the so called best of lists and many of the "hm seems to be fun on the screenie...but isnt"...and many of the bad quality freeware games......about the best of lists: hm often i asked myself wtf...why is this or that game innit. its just boring with lack of quality/fun/playability...

so whatever. here on this list are only games that i have enjoyed...i cannot guarantee that you will also find them fun but i think in this thread theres a quality standard given. so the probability is high that you enjoy most of them if you like plattformers.

this game is truly a MASTERPIECE! it feels and looks very polished.
the graphics, music, sounds, controls, combo system, powerups...ALL...
pure greatness!
kill the pigs and bats with your pogo stick . awesome!

hint 1:
there are 5 levels and in each level your time is limited.
so...only collect the level up bubbles when the time is nearly over and not instantly
when it appears. that way you maximize your playtime cause when you enter the next level your time meter will be refilled.

hint 2:
there are several power ups and one is a combo maximizer. its the one with a face innit.
collect it and then kill the bats and/or pigs shown at the bottom in the right order to get massive combo points.

yes the game is bloody :)
you have no energy bar, you have a pain-meter. when its full your dead...but when you are wounded you can wait and rest a few seconds to recover fully.

good game with fine controls.

you have a magnetic suit and its about switching polarity so that you are attracted or pushed away by magnets. great.
platforming + polarity feature. higly recommended.
by the way the game was a winner at the independent games festival 2008. (igf.com)

the game is not very hard and thats good...so no frustration is given...if you die you can instantly continue.
the game takes about 15 - 20 entertaining minutes to finish.
oh and if available...play it with a gamepad.

in short: this is a polished jetpack shooter action game that plays and
looks like a very good snes game.

its in japanese but thats no problem cause you dont need to
understand anything to enjoy this game.

anyways here i will explain the basic gameplay and what to do to get
started:

Z shoot
X activate jetpack (tap slightly in air so you dont need much fuel and
stay longer in air)
C hold down to change your weapon (you have 3 shoots of special
explosive bomb shoot)

when you press down and hit X you will shoot homing missiles
when you press up you will talk to persons or enter the terminal
ESC pause menu and status

what to do:
allright first you have to walk to the left until you reach the end of
the screen and talk to the person that stands there.
then you come to teh next screen.
talk to that person too.
now training mode is activated and you have to destroy all the
targets and go to the left.
same procedure a few times.
(i think about 4-5 training sections)
after you solved this the first level starts with real enemies.

when you start the first level you see a terminal.
press up to enter it.
now you will see 3 options(4 to be exact but the the option on
top isnt selectable)

so i recommend that you save your progress and then start
the first level.

1. not selectable
2. choose between training mission and finished levels
(if you choose one you have to confirm your selection->
first = yes....second = cancel
3. save function (just press Z to save... if you want to load
a saved game you have to go back to the title screen)
4. exit screen

later in the game you can buy items and upgrade your weapons.
choose the thing you want and press Z.
X is for canceling.
to equip your new bought stuff press ESC and go into the status menu.
here you can choose and exchange your
slots by pressing Z and selecting them.

this game took the developer 3 years to make.
action platform shooter with interesting story well made cutscenes and cool soundtrack.
its much to read but it fits good into the game.
the game gets better and better...in the beginning, well the game explains the basic mechanics and rpg elements, upgrading and stuff...but in level 2 and 3 the game becomes very interesting and fun.

Iji is an action-packed strategic platform shooter with a detailed story, large levels with multiple paths, powerful bosses and lots of secrets. There are alternate gameplay events, dialogues and scenes depending on what you do, a wealth of extras and bonus features, and seven stats to upgrade through a leveling system. well do anyone remember the c.lassic shareware platformer
secret agent from apogee?
this looks and plays like a sequel with improved graphics.
very polished...move over the map and select a level you want.
then you get a short briefing which mission you have to accomplish.

you control your agent with the arrow keys
jump with S
shoot in left direction with A
shoot in right direction with D
(you can choose in options menu to use only one key which means
that you shoot in the direction you are currently looking)
press TAB to leave the briefing screen or to show it again.
also press TAB if you dont want to submit hiscores.

(first i left the whole game with alt+f4 until i discovered this)

fine retro graphics, good controls and funny dialogues makes this a good platformer experience.
controls are cursor keys + space for jumping. (and enter to restart a level or for skipping whole dialogues)

the first few levels are extremely easy.
the game gets interesting when there appear swinging ropes, many traps and enemies.
and when you receive your lovely green high jump boots ;)

treasure tower (from the same developer of the excellent special agent) is a polished frantic one screen platformer which is about getting to the exit of each single room... in order to reach the top of the tower to get a certain treasure.
but you have to accomplish the levels before the time runs out.
a big analog clock shows your time... 30 secs in the beginning.
when you touch enemies or fall into a gap you will loose a few seconds...
the time can be refilled with food which appears normally every few rooms.

the fact that there are plenty of unlockable game modes and many many different rooms makes this a great game which should please any platformer veteran.

cursor keys for movement, up for activating a switch or entering a door and shift to jump.

Oldschool Platformer that mixes 2D retro pixel graphics with 3D Effects.
+ Rewind Remote Control Feature. (As seen in Braid and Prince Of Persia)
When you got destroyed: Be Kind Rewind would Jack Black say.
Enemies can be destroyed if you hop them on the head or with usual laser beams.
For Laser Beams, Rewind, Pausing Enemies and Recording you need your Remote Control...Therefore you need Batteries which have to be collected.
(After you have used the Elevator in the 1st Level go to the left to collect your first batteries!)
Recording Function: You can record what you have played and then press the play button to see a holograph of yourself. For Example you you record yourself jumping straight into the air and then play that holograph when an enemy walks by to stomp on his head.
By the way once you get the Jetpack you can charge it with pressing up, then release the button and tap the UP arrow key for maximum jump height.

I recommend to give this game a try!!

king is a polished one screen platformer from buster (the developer of the excellent zelda style guardian of paradise and the castlevania like akuji - the demon)

you play a king and have to stomp on all the enemies to get to the next level.
most enemies need 2 jumps to kill....but when you hit the Z key exactly when you land on them you will perform a power jump! you will jump twice as high and the enemy is also defeated.
so there are 3 jump modes: normal jump, high jump (simply jump on enemy), power jump (jump on enemy and hit Z at the right time)

i also recommend to try out the demo of noitu love 2 which provides a total different and also great gameplay experience. i bought it recently and i have to say that it is easily worth the 10$.

a fine remake of mega man 7 in nes style.
gameplay is the same as in the nes originals :)

start config to change the resolution to 768 x 672.
(the game had a very slow framerate when i started it the first time....i exited the game and started it again with a higher resolution and then it worked flawlessly)

your aim is to reach the red flag in every level...to do so you have to choose where you want your ball shaped goo to fly and then press the left mouse button to fire of the goo in that direction.

fine one screen platformer where you rescue animals.
stun enemies with your stun gun and get all the keys in each level to rescue the animal.
(tip: i recommend to tap ctrl instead of pressing it... that way it can recharge itself everytime)
it has a great retro feel and a aproach as it was straight from the arcade. (intro and stuff)

i think many already know this little program.
but for those who arent familiar with it:
simply start the program (no installation required) and then click on the auto setting wizard.
that way you assign every key on the keyboard to a button on your gamepad.
when you start your game now you can use your gamepad.

the third jumper was released yesterday.
so i tested it and i have to admit its a good one screen platformer. during the game you get special abbilities.
red ogmo: fast, double jump + high jump(running in one direction then tap other direction and jump simulatnously)
green ogmo: slower, you can use yourself as a rope
pink ogmo: can hover like princes peach in super mario bros 2
2 more characters you will get during the game which i havent discovered yet.

armed with a pistol (and later shotgun and machine guns) you fight against invading bunnies.
including fine controls, wall jump and jumping backwards while shooting in the enemy direction (as seen in max payne and some movies ;)
plus cinematic scenes.
unfortunatley its only a 3 level demo yet. but its damn entertaining and offers about 20 minutes of fun (including a boss fight....tip: aim at the top at something spiky...before the fight you have to wall jump to fall against the floor to break it down...first i thought where to go, then i jumped around and found it out....easy ;)
check this game out. its worth it for any platformer/ run and gun fan.

you have a magnetic suit and its about switching polarity so that you are attracted or pushed away by magnets. great.
platforming + polarity feature. higly recommended.
by the way the game was a winner at the independent games festival 2008. (igf.com)

the game is not very hard and thats good...so no frustration is given...if you die you can instantly continue.
the game takes about 15 - 20 entertaining minutes to finish.
oh and if available...play it with a gamepad.

in short: this is a polished jetpack shooter action game that plays and
looks like a very good snes game.

its in japanese but thats no problem cause you dont need to
understand anything to enjoy this game.

anyways here i will explain the basic gameplay and what to do to get
started:

Z shoot
X activate jetpack (tap slightly in air so you dont need much fuel and
stay longer in air)
C hold down to change your weapon (you have 3 shoots of special
explosive bomb shoot)

when you press down and hit X you will shoot homing missiles
when you press up you will talk to persons or enter the terminal
ESC pause menu and status

what to do:
allright first you have to walk to the left until you reach the end of
the screen and talk to the person that stands there.
then you come to teh next screen.
talk to that person too.
now training mode is activated and you have to destroy all the
targets and go to the left.
same procedure a few times.
(i think about 4-5 training sections)
after you solved this the first level starts with real enemies.

when you start the first level you see a terminal.
press up to enter it.
now you will see 3 options(4 to be exact but the the option on
top isnt selectable)

so i recommend that you save your progress and then start
the first level.

1. not selectable
2. choose between training mission and finished levels
(if you choose one you have to confirm your selection->
first = yes....second = cancel
3. save function (just press Z to save... if you want to load
a saved game you have to go back to the title screen)
4. exit screen

later in the game you can buy items and upgrade your weapons.
choose the thing you want and press Z.
X is for canceling.
to equip your new bought stuff press ESC and go into the status menu. here you can choose and exchange your slots by pressing Z and selecting them.

nice game- very nice being able to jetpack around but I can't seem to talk to that person with an exclamation mark on their head. My PS pad seems configured towards it but can't find what button it is to talk..

normally should the up button on gamepad work but
gamepad and keyboard are working together...
so you can press up arrow key on keyboard as a solution.
