Chief being an old man will end up with Halsey who Cortana is based on. I bet to save Cortana, Halsey will have to die in some way, basically her memories and soul which Cortana will replace to survive which offers some redemption for Halsey. They will both die in the end but in the comfort of each other. It probably feels like an old relationship for them and they are never ever going to show Chief and Cortana getting it on. Old couple it is.
How old is Chief in Halo 4, considering he's been in cryo for a few years...

46 Years old normally but perhaps a bit younger being in Cryo. He did look a bit grizzled at the end though and the Librarian may have tweaked more than just being immune to the composer, who knows what that has done to him. Might fast track his age and I feel he might get some new force like powers.

If anything, that Forerunner augmentation was a plot device to keep him going as long as they need him to.

To be quite honest, I'm perfectly fine with that!

Fair enough, they just tend to make me roll my eyes. I usually let videogames off as they serve more than a narrative purpose.

Normal editions get a choice of two, LE owners get the choice of six.

In the US they had some stupid promotion which was if you played since launch you got a choice of all six after a certain date, passed already. So 343 screwed over the rest of the world and even LE owners to some degree.

Normal users will get access to the other four staggered over time.

That's the original plan but I suspect 343 will have a major update that puts some things in order and change the cluster fuck to something more coherent.

I hope not. They can leave all that stuff to lesser FPSes. Master Chief + gun = job done.

Just seems to fit but slow progress through the next two games with a hint here and there.

You just know there is going to be a moment were his glove comes off showing his battered hand as he unleashes his evolved powers like Bioshock to give him a chance against the bad guy with his. Sure halve his head gear will come off in final scenes with Cortana so they can share a bare hand on heart and face moment.

Upon lots hours worth of multiplayer gameplay I am now firmly in the camp of the opinion that the DMR is overpowered.

However I think that just a small fix to the bloom behaviour may balance it a little more in the favour of the other rifles. At the moment in most maps I feel that I'm at a distinct disadvantage using any other rifle at any range. It's a shame as all the rifles offer interesting takes on the weapon type.

I'd like to try a nonDMR playlist to see if the game would benefit from its exclusion.

Maybe we could have a DMRless game or two on Halo Mondays so I can have a look?
  • Deleted user 4 January 2013 18:40:37
This game is just a couple of fixes (and maps) away from being truly exceptional in my opinion in terms of online multiplayer.

I've not played this since I opened Far Cry 3 at Xmas. I really need to get back to it - Raider DSTT Helmet won't unlock itself, and I'm IIRC halfway to the 1000 games played requirement...

Phew - Hslo 4 multiplayer really is superb. The extra polish just makes a great game greater.

Only complaint is that they were stingy with the maps. 3 more Slayer maps and a couple more BTB maps and it would be perfect. I will pick up the msp pscks as I have the spare pennies, but csnt help feeling I will only be able to play them with the hardcore in dedicated playlists (Being an OK player, I like to play against a mix of useless and hardcore if I can...)

The DMR is a bit over-powered. Did they nerf the BR sfter s week or so? I remember it being lethal at mid-range to begin with, but the DMR seems to destroy it now...
  • Deleted user 5 January 2013 09:17:15
I really want to get back to this but just don't have the spare time. The small amount I have I am putting in to borderlands 2 that I got the other week with season pass.
Will force myself when Spartan ops re starts.

The skill-based ranking system is probably the same as Halo 3's one in social playlists...it's apparently there, but really doesn't work xP

Some thoughts on the single-player campaign (because fuck paying for Xbox Live Gold with the amount I've been playing the Xbox recently):
    - Great art and rendering technology
    - Impressive engine cut-scenes (especially characters and skin-shaders / lighting)
    - Difficulty was manageable but quite frustrating on Heroic (yes, I'm terrible). After switching to Normal I actually had some fun. The shield scaling for Heroic feels slightly off, everything just takes way too many hits to kill (especially watchers). Also, it feels as if the AI cheats and moves enemies as soon as I have a nice shot lined up. Heroic and Legendary would probably be fun in coop though.
    - The levels themselves were not particularly memorable, but the reconfigurable geometry was a nice idea (although I'm not sure it really added anything). The Forerunner architecture reminded me of the style of P.N.03, a game I still dearly miss a sequel to. Too often the flow degenerates to "Go somewhere for some reason that only makes sense if you played all games 5 times and read all the books, and then do the same thing 2 to 3 times to progress" (go through portals, push buttons, activate light-bridges). Mostly push convenient buttons / Cortana insertion points.
    - As alluded to in the previous point, it feels to me as if the story is getting worse and worse with each game (ODST and Reach sort of aside): Halo 1 and 2's was fine, simple Humans against aliens (with the Flood sort of popping up) and some mystery as to the forerunners / Halo rings. Now we have all sorts wawa that feels more like Matrix 2 and 3, instead of 1 (Reclaimer, Mantle, Composer, Didact, Librarian, ...). All this Jesus-complex, 1000s of years leading up to Master Chief (and his armour!) and then on-the-spot gene-manipulation bullshit just went over the top. The mystery (and awe) is sort of gone.

In summary, an above average single-player game with a convoluted story that grasps higher than it can reach, with slightly repetitive level design that is saved by excellent tech and me wanting to see the next cut-scene (even if it is mostly gibberish). Nonetheless, I still hope there's more Master Chief (and Cortana). :)

The Halo story has always been much bigger than the small bit made obvious in the games. Halo 4, to my delight, brings more of this to the fore but seems to confuse and upset a lot of casual fans by the looks of it.

The more I play it, the more I love Wreckage from the Crimson DLC. It may be my favourite BTB map now. Although the DLC achievements are entirely broken - have got two by not doing what it asked, including the seemingly impossible "get a kill with a melee upon landing from a man cannon".
  • Deleted user 6 January 2013 14:37:07
I really like Wreckage a lot, the man cannnons are a lot of fun. In fact all the DLC maps are good, they really come into their own on objective gametypes. Looking forward to seeing what comes next on the DLC conveyor. Anyone have any news on Forge variants or the file browser becoming active. It's now a couple of months after Halo 4s release, it's about time we could at least download new user created stuff. What's the hold up?

So with Cortana supposedly dead, who's going to help MC open doors and generally interact with every space mcguffin going? He better hope the Forerunner gumpth isn't based on the Apple bespoke philosophy.

I guess based on what Cortana says it'll be another Cortana model, but with less burden and feisty like she was in the original Halo. But I guess the first Cortana will be back before the trilogy is out.

Are there any plans to let you create SpOps missions in Forge?

Not terribly exciting. Don't think I'll bother with Spartan Ops, chore more than anything, even with new locations.

If Forge maps are going to be tested then I presume file share comes along with it. How else do they get them ?

How funny would it be if you only got the title update with the Majestic Map Pack.

    How unlikely it would be.

Forge map playlist is a good idea - finally. Hopefully that means filesharing will also be, finally, implemented: WHY has it taken so long?

Other priorities, development hell. They do a lot of outsourcing so I'm not sure who is really pushing ahead with changes. Certain Affinity have helped develop War Games, Spartan Ops, Map Packs, Forge. CGI is outsourced, Halo Waypoint is outsourced. 343 on campaign and overall.

Simplifying I'm sure but you do wonder what their development is like if all that talent and funds can't even match previous games. The latest bulletin they sort of say could have down things better, not a full on Bungie account of the Halo 2 fuck up though. 343 could be better with community chat.

I'm just on the verge of tipping over SR50, and having the LE I have all the specialisations unlock able. Which is the best to go for first? I'm a DMR whore, so Rogue?
