Yeah well I'm not overly keen on their really poppy stuff wither although We Can Work it Out for example is still phenonomenomialz. But yeah, The White Album, Let it Be, Sgt Peps, etc. are the cornerstones of 'most' popular western music.

Whizzo not reading morriss' post properly, shocker.

I said fine if you don't like the music, but to say the most influential band of the last 30 years are overrated is an oxymoron in itself and thus wrong.

Led Zeppelin is just as overrated as The Beatles. In other words, not at all. They pretty much invented hard rock, and while they didn't play very well, the music they wrote was very consistant. Sure, just like every band they had their ups and downs in terms of song quality, but overall, they made a bunch of incredible songs, each considered classics.

    Black Dog
    Misty Mountain Hop
    Communication Breakdown
    Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
    Stairway to Heaven
    Good Times Bad Times
    Dazed and Confused
    Heartbreaker
    Ramble On
    Immigration Day
    Since I've Been Loving You
    The Battle of Evermore
    The Song Remains the Same
    No Quarter
    Houses of the Holy
    Trampled Underfoot
    Kashmir
    Achilles Last Stand
    Nobody's Fault but Mine

    etc

With so many classics in your reportoire, overrated is a very very strong word.

I think people are confusing their own music tastes with objective truths such as how everyone pretty much attributes their influences to the way we view certain genres today.

It's a fucking opinion that they are overrated you twit.

Do we really need to put IMO or IMHO after everything we post or just take it as fucking read.

There's no point in me saying what I think about Floyd, no one'll agree with me! :p

The division bell and everything after was shit?

No, that (first album aside, which I quite liked the sound of from what I've heard of it)....

...Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall are boring, pretentious nonsense.

Well, I don't quite like the term "overrated". There's a difference between saying "I don't like something" and saying the same thing is "Overrated", no? First means you don't like it for some maybe perfectly valid reason, second means the people who do like it are somehow wrong.

For example, I don't like football management games, but I wouldn't call them overrated.

Well you could just express yourself clearly and say you don't like them. You used the word overrated not me.

...and anyway, I took your opinion into account into my reply. I'm just saying the term 'overrated' is the wrong one to use. No matter if it's your opinion or not. You simply cannot say they're overrated without looking foolish.

Well, mabye Whizzo means that they are overrated. That's a valid opinion, too. I just think it should be differntiated between not liking something and saying something is overrated.

I'm not sure if overrated is considered an expression for personal opinion, but if we're going to be picky about it, it should mean rated above their worth.

Giving Halo a 10 is overrating. Giving it an 8 is not.

I don't see how when almost every band in the history of music since the sixties has said that they have influenced them in some way. Except Metallica of course, but they're hard...

    :D

I do like progressive music to an extent, and also ambient noise in music. It's just the actual music itself that was the problem. It was all too polite and... middle-class, in a strange way. I like my music to have a rough edge, Floyd just don't have that. Money's a pretty good song, but it's a bit rich coming from a bunch of public schoolboys. :)

As for Led Zep, they just don't do anything for me at all. I can't really explain why.

    It's because you're not actually human, but a similar-looking sub-species. That's why.

I've always hated Led Zep too. I think it's mostly down to Percy sounding like he is in pain all the time.

I'm the same, really don't like his voice at all. Musically though, they were awesome. The Rain Song is one of my faves.

There was nothing after that, muppet!

A momentary Lapse of reason was mostly crap but Division Bell is a fine album, it's not Animals or WIsh you Were Here but it's still excellent.
Sorry, I meant to say "Everything after 'The Wall' was shit, ESPECIALLY The Division Bell. Poo. POO."

The Division Bell has some good high points. More than a few shonky bits though.
