I'm getting a 360 soon and I cant afford a hd tv just yet. I know the console comes with a composite scart connector but would a proper scart cable improve the picture quality much, mayve make it sharper?

Yes, providing your TV is RGB compatible. Alternatively use your monitor.

I play my 360 on an SDTV most of the time and ,yes, an RGB scart makes it so much better.

It isn't massively inferior to the 40" HDTV downstairs really.

His TV might be so shit though that it doesn't look much better than a CRT.

Nah, you misunderstand. I suppose I wasn't clear enough.

It's a great TV, I was just saying that the difference, although large, isn't quite as huge as some people would have you believe. It doesn't ruin the game or anything.

Right Halo 3 and Fifa 08 have me chomping at the bit. Next pay day seriously considering purchasing a 360. I'd like to know if both games will play full screen on a SDTV?

Yes they will, they'll also look pretty damn fine if you pick up an RGB scart too.

Cool. I only ask because I was toying with the idea of maybe getting a hdtv on finance in Dixons. I don't work for them I swear! But its never wise to spend what you dont have. If the games dont letterbox horribly then its all good.

I thought Bioshock looked better on my SD CRT than on my monitor.

Considering you can buy a 22" widescreen LCD monitor for 150 these days, might not be too long before you go HD anyway ;)

Thought of that but I'll have a HDTV within 3-6 months so didn't see the point really. SD will do fine for now given the vote of confidence in this thread. Can't wait for Friday now!

I had a 32" Sony CRT at the start of this year and played my 360 on it for a good few months before I caved in and bought a plasma.

It looked pretty good imo and I'll second the MS advanced scart cable. People talk about VGA vs component etc but for a real night and day difference on PQ just compare the horrible standard scart with the advanced one.

As an aide I also picked up a 26" LCD very recently, not much money and it looks fantastic, a HD TV may not be as expensive as you tuink.

Will next gen games really look 'next gen' on SD TVs? I'm tempted to join the bandwagon but really cannot afford a HDTV right now..

Depends entirely on what you'll use it for and how close you'll be.

I have a 28" SDTV downstairs in my livingroom which is to be replaced by a (minimum) 32" HD LCD soon after Xmas. In my den upstairs I have a 22" LCD monitor hooked up to my 360 and PC. Obviously I'm far closer to that screen than I am to the one downstairs.

As retroid mentions, sitting distance is a big factor in differentiating between SD and HD. The other factor, obviously, is screen size relative to that.

I regularly test my 360 through my 24" widescreen monitor (the latest Dell HC model via VGA) and compare it to my 32" SD TV (Tosh 32zp48 via component) which I sit around seven feet away from. To be honest there isnt a great deal of difference. Obviously sitting as close to my SD TV as I do my monitor the quality makes it presence felt. However at seven feet away its hard to make a call.

The only issue for me on the TV is the smaller/blurry text and the fact I have to turn up the brightness on the TV. Another point to consider if you watch telly and play on the same screen is that standard tv looks far far better on a CRT than an LCD by a mile. Until High Def becomes standard across the board I won't be getting an HDTV.

However, a side by side comparison of an HDTV and my CRT would be the only way to make a definitive judgement.
